Project Natal renamed Kinect, due in November

[UPDATE] E3 2010: Xbox 360 motion-sensing system to come with fitness games "built into it"; Disney and Star Wars games teased, Wii Sports-like minigame compilation, pet simulator, dance game, and rafting adventure title en route.

LOS ANGELES--Just over one year after it unveiled Project Natal to the public at last year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, Microsoft has given it a name. Tonight at a star-studded "world premiere" event featuring the French-Canadian circus troupe Cirque du Soleil, the software giant rechristened its camera-based motion-control Kinect (pronounced like "connect").

Kinect had its coming-out party in Los Angeles Sunday night.
Kinect had its coming-out party in Los Angeles Sunday night.

The name seems to be a tie-in of sorts to the Microsoft Kin, a family of smartphones the company launched in April. Any details on connectivity were absent, however. Aaron Greenberg, director of product management for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, told GameSpot that "Sunday is about entertainment, Monday is about information."

Greenberg's reference is to Microsoft's press conference on Monday morning, where harder information on Kinect is anticipated. Already confirmed for an October release by a loose-lipped Saudi Microsoft executive, the system's price remains unknown. Also unconfirmed are rumors that the add-on will be bundled with a new slimline model of the Xbox 360, which was apparently outed by an Italian advertisement earlier today.

Sunday's event was all about shock and awe--if one considers Quebecois circus acrobats in skin-tight outfits shocking and awesome. Some 80 performers and 200 support personnel were on hand, with a stage show that took 25 truckloads of props and equipment to put on.

Though he generally avoided divulging hard facts, Greenberg promised that Kinect will still "see you, hear you, and recognize you," implying that the facial and voice recognition functionality of the device remains intact.

Greenberg promised that Microsoft's briefing on Monday morning would have a large emphasis on "core games." He called out Halo: Reach, Gears of War 3, and Fable III by name and said all three will be on the show floor at Microsoft's booth at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Crackdown 2 will also be playable on the show floor.

Kinect, up close and personal.

For more details, check out GameSpot's live blog of Microsoft's press conference tomorrow morning or the live stream of the event on GameSpot's E3 2010 event page.

[UPDATE] At the Kinect naming event, Microsoft also announced that Disney would be an official partner on the project. It also showed a brief snippet of a Star Wars game that will use the motion-sensing system but did not offer any concrete details about the project.

[UPDATE2] USA Today is listing four new games that will use Kinect, including the Wii Sports-like Kinect Sports. The athletic minigame compilation will reportedly include boxing, bowling, beach volleyball, soccer, ping-pong, and track and field events.

The national daily is also reporting that Microsoft is readying Kinectimals, a pet simulator that will let players train and raise more than 20 virtual cats--including big cats such as a cheetah, lion, and tiger. Also apparently in the works is Kinect Adventures, which will include the river rafting simulation River Rush revealed earlier this year by screenwriter James Gunn.

Another game USA Today lists in development for Kinect is Dance Central, which will have players tackle dance challenges much like the television show So You Think You Can Dance. The previously announced game Joy Ride will also apparently be fully Kinect-compliant, having players steer cars with a phantom steering wheel much like the Burnout Paradise demo Microsoft showed off last year.

[UPDATE]: Good Morning America this morning reported that Kinect will be on shelves in November, with fitness games "built into it."

This console is for morons. Look at the ads and see the player is taken after the motion is made on the screen.

Everyone hated the Wii and iPad names. I assume Kinect will eventually be accepted over time and people will eventually forget the Project Natal name.

These companies really need to stop wasting the good names during the prototype phase of their projects. Natal sounds way cooler than Kinect. I won't be getting it anyway because I don't care about this motion control fad.

Natal sounded so cool and I hope they get some more games for this soon, and that the third party games don't suck like most of the one's from the Wii's selection of games. Just giving my opinion, Wii fans.

Terrible name............I am sure it will grow on us all a little bit.......but terrible. \ \ I can hardly wait for this motion sensing to crap out and we can just get back to making great games. \ \ Imagine the awesome amount of games we could have had if MS and Sony would have invested their money in games rather than Move and this crap.

I think people should wait for the tech to come out to see the games they make and how it is integrated into titles like GOW3 before we go all Reagan smash. Also as other have said, don't like it don't buy it, can't blame Microsoft for trying to run off with some of Nintendo's noob pie (not to rag, I actually own one) Though I think Nintendo'd got a pretty firm grip on that demographic and neither MS or Sony will really dent that

@termadoyle You are saying that the Microsoft is going Nintendo, but Sony is also doing the same thing with their stupid Move controllers that are even more like the Wii Remote.

Why not just leave the name as Natal? I think that sounds better than Kinect. Still, I'm not paying $150 for an accessory unless it's mind-blowingly awesome and not just an expensive Eye-Toy.

Here's the thing. What type of person posts on video game website forums?....Answer: Mostly Hardcore gamers. What type of person BUYS casual games that do not post on website forums?...Parents looking for a fun casual game for the family. Based on all the backlash from the mostly hardcore gamers posting on this forum regarding Kinect, I'm of the opinion that Casual Gamer Mom/Dad won't care...and Kinect WILL sell significantly in competition with the Wii! Brilliant move on Microsoft's part from a marketing standpoint. And guess what...you don't need 4 sets of controllers and nunchucks to have the whole family play using the Kinect like you would with the Wii or PSMove. Whether it sucks or not to the hardcore gamer, Kinect IS going to sell out this holiday season! Look for it to be the "New Hotness" on ebay in November!

Termadoyle - it's meant to expand the system's audience to the very young and old. It's not meant for hardcore gamers. Why the hell is that so hard for you people to understand? If you don't like it, don't use it - it's not REQUIRED to play your games, it just offers a new way to play them. Geez.

@Peachy556 -- My bad. I didn't mean it as you don't have friends, it came out wrong. Was just trying to make a point where if you have friends and play with them regularly the voice chat feature is much needed feature and playing on PSN just doesn’t compare because of this, for me. I understand everyones got their opinion of what they want or need out of an online service. Some want free and just so they can play multiplayer games. Others use the social aspects of it to group with friends, etc. I respect your opinion and I wasn't trying to argue but I can see how I may have come across like that. I maybe should have stopped after my first post. “My Elite works just fine :) suppose this is to get all those non gamers to go out and buy a system so they can play Natal - Kinect whatever the hell it's called now... Don't get me wrong, I'll try it, and I'm all for new technology but Microsoft and Sony know what they are doing be releasing these new motion controlled ways to play. They know Nintendo got non gamers to dip into their pockets and buy the Wii's because it was new and interesting. Now they want in on the market. I doubt these new ways to play will ever take over the good ol' controllers we gamers know and love though.“

I cannot help but be reminded of the toy building set Kinex when I hear the name. I wish they would have kept "Natal" since it sounded very interesting. Kinect makes me want to pronounced it the way I see the name so I struggle to say it as "connect."

My opinion about Kinect: If you don't embarrass easily, you should be just fine...if you don't have a big ass flat screen to play it on, good luck...

I don't really like the new name, but on the other hand the same hate was shown from Revolution to the wii. I will say that after a few months we aren't going to care. Seems kinda worrying for Microsoft that many of their Kinect games seem to be rip-offs off Nintendo's Wii Sports and other "Wii" series of casual games. The same thing for Sony. Is HD (and in Microsoft's case, no controller at all) enough to damage the Wii's foothold into the casual market?

How can Kinect be pronounced like connect? That doesn't make sense. And as a Xbox 360 owner who was looking forward to seeing the line-up of games to Natal.... I am utterly underwhelmed. I hope they announce something alot more interesting, but so far... this is just pathetic MS.

I have a bad feeling about this, this is like when Nintendo went from Nintendo Revoluion to Wii. Brace yourselves people. Also @big-boss-91, after the 360 starts using Natal or what ever the hell it's called now, the Ps3 will follow, it may not be immediately but it will happen. So enjoy the Ps3 while you can!

Why is everyone so against motion controls? If you don't like the games, don't efffing buy them! The first time I played Metroid Prime corruption I had a fit it was so cool. Sure kinect and move will have stupid stuff - but guess what? We don't have to play them - what I'm pumped for is the potential for the hardcore games (3D headtracking on shooters FTW!!)

Well if I do want to get this, I'd rather wait till a year after it's release or till all or most known bugs are fixed. The worst case scenario would be if it ends up getting the red "eye" of death 2 days after release day.

I am actually digging the name (though I have grown used to Natal). Still not enough info to tell whether I will enjoy this or not, but so far this is looking far superior to Wii's and PS3's motion capturing abilities.

@big-boss-91 If I remember correctly one of the PS3's biggest games is about playing with a sack dolly? whats that other game where you play with the eyetoy pet thing, you know the one with the little cute monkey dog thing where you can wash and brush it and put scrunchies in its hair. Real manly they are. Again, I'm not a MS fanboy, I own both, but I hate hypocrites.
