Pachter warns Wii U will finish a 'distant third' behind PS4 and Xbox One

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter says a combination of the Wii U's technical specifications and lack of third-party support will be a challenge for Nintendo.

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has spoken about how he believes Nintendo's Wii U will be unable to compete with the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and declared that Nintendo's home console will finish a "distant third in this console race."

No Caption Provided

"Nintendo's in trouble right now," said Pachter in an interview with ABC News. "Nintendo, I think, waited two years too long to launch a competitive console, you know, a high-definition console with the PS3 and the Xbox 360. I think by the time they did launch a console that stacks up really well, the other two guys passed them by."

Microsoft and Sony will both launch the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 later in 2013, a year after Nintendo launched the Wii U.

Pachter believes the lack of third-party publisher support will also contribute to Nintendo being unable to sell the Wii U to a mass market audience. "The publishers are pretty excited about supporting the Xbox One and the PS4. They really didn't say anything [during E3 2013] about the Wii U."

During E3 2013 Nintendo revealed its suite of first-party Nintendo software for the coming months, including Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, and The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD.

Nintendo reported in April that sales of the Wii U stood at 3.45 million worldwide, as Nintendo reported a profit of ¥7.09 billion ($71.3m/£46.7m) for the financial year. Nintendo has also said that its 3DS has become the console of choice in Japan.

"We know EA has no games in development for Wii U," added Pachter. "If others follow suit, I mean if you see Activision pull support, if you see Ubisoft, you see Take 2 pull support, the Wii U is a Nintendo-only gaming device, which is the way they were back with the NES in 1985. They're not going to sell a lot of consoles if they don't have games like FIFA, and Battlefield, and Call of Duty, and Grand Theft Auto."

EA said in May that it had no games in development for the Wii U, but has since tried to retract its statement. Ubisoft continues to support the machine.

"I think [Nintendo] are at the bottom of a huge mountain with a huge uphill climb," said Pachter. "I don't think they're going to get that mojo back. I think these two guys are passing them by. And this PS4, priced $50 more than the Wii U, why would anybody buy a Wii U? Unless they just have to play Nintendo games. I think the way it actually shakes out is anybody who buys a Wii U that really is a hardcore gamer is going to buy an PS4 or an Xbox One in addition, so they can play those third-party titles they love. So I think Nintendo becomes a distant third in this console race."

Michael Pachter is an idiot, and you idiots who believe him are morons. Wii U will easily outsell XBox One. But not PS4.

Ok let me get this straight. Nintendo releases the Wii with inferior hardware and lack of 3rd party support. I mean wow the thing wasn't even HD. Nintendo goes on to crush the competition in sales on both console and handheld fronts. The Wii becomes the 3rd best selling console in history. So why am I once again reading an article about Nintendo failing? There is just no evidence to support these claims. I could understand having this conversation in 2000, but as far as sales go at the moment, Nintendo is king.

Nintendo just needs to change it's marketing direction. The Wii had awful specs but it was the most sold console in the world, the same probably couldn't happen with the Wii U but it could turn out like the next Gamecube and do fairly well on the market. The way I see it is you should just buy the PS4 and keep the Wii U as a secondary console for parties and the typical gaming environment Nintendo offers. I don't recommend getting the Xbox One because it's basically the same thing as the PS4 except with slightly worse graphics, less titles and a higher price.

@cowboysrock981 ok you enjoy playing the 3 games worth playing online with the WiiU, and enjoy paying $300 for games when PSN and XBL gamers enjoy getting free full games every month.

all nintendo care about is recycling the same mario/zelda cr@p but its fanboys think its something new and great because this time you play with a BS controller.

nintendo was hoping that with the market/industry been crazy on mobiles/tablets that theyd try cloning a tablet and add it with a console, this been another BS hyped gimmick/fad that nintendo hoped would print money (like the wii did).

but the problem is, compared to the current systems that have been out over 5 years, the wii u hasnt got anything that the other systems havent already done.

wow it has slightly better graphics, but i wouldnt pay for a game again just for that.

the fact that the wii u is over priced aswel, gamers are not interested in the console, as soon as the XBX1/PS4 comes out, devs will focus more on the actual next gen hardware and the wii u will be left behind.

i hope this greed antic ruins nintendo, they no longer deserve to make consoles, all they do is sell out of date consoles with cheap hadware that is always one step behind its competitors... i mean come on nintendo, you used to be the best, you cant be bothered to include media support, the wii u has a blue ray drive, let us watch movies.

nintendo is just a box that plays out of date games.... wake me up when they catch up

The delusional fanboyism of these comments is hilarious. Nintendo relys on gimmicks to sale theyre hardware and doesn't even try to compete with the other console makers now. It actually was a winning strategy with the Wii but old folks in a rest home are not the demographic you need to target for this market (no one feels they need a better version of wii bowiling) which they are just now starting to see. People are saying who wants a watered down pc (PS4 and Xbone), yeah really who wants to see the latest game screaming across your HD flatscreen running 1080p @ 60fps, with hi res textures and fsaa? Of coarse gamestop just stop taking pre-orders on PS4 and Nintendo cant give away theyre system so maybe that's an answer? Then you have a guy in here saying TLoU is not worth 60 bones, but this same guy has been playing Mario for 20 years, THATS funny. TLoU had more innovation then ive seen from Nintendo in years (we wont even mention the game launched on a 6 year old console and still looks better then anything wiiu has or will have most likely). When Nintendo admits they screwed the pooch and are in trouble with the wiiu (which everyone that's not delusional already knew) and you still have people saying its all good and donkey kong 52 is gonna pull the console out of the toilet this holiday season, guess we know who spawned the original fanboys. This console is not gonna do a Dreamcast dump but I do see a Saturn slide happening (very short life span). If they want to compete NEXT time (cause the wiiu is in serious trouble this holiday with the new launches) they should leave the gimmicks at home and build an actual game machine. Oh and people that are saying Watch Dogs is going to run better on Wiiu then Xbone (and I HATE microshaft) is also just talking to make themselves feel better or are actually VERY slow (just look at the RAM), wiiu will get watch dogs and it will be an ugly mutt compared to the other versions. I apologize in advance if I double posted...

I agree with you every step of the way just wanted to add this and see if you agree with me.

@jman644 Seeing headline after headline of developers not supporting WiiU or Nintendo dropping projects is a dead give away. Im not sure why anyone will be a Nintendo fanboy after SNES other than to play GBA and DS systems. Heck i thought the DS was completely f'ed up b/c they tried to push fail blocky 3d graphics bunch of times.

Anyways. Nintendo makes their $$$ with DS/3DS. Those have tons of unique games and is a perfect example of how a Nintendo hardware can overtake the better Sony hardware.

But everything since the GC for home console is completely idiotic. Nintendo tells Western gamers to Fck off, they dont try at E3, they try to be different and then just fail, and then say they never failed at all and fanboys still back them up. Nintendo released soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many bad hardware peripherals that most of us cant recall 1/5 of them. Nintendo abandoned them that quickly.

If WiiU last another2 years and they abandon it, that would make sense. Wii took forever to die. Catch up nintendo or just focus on portable gaming.

Wii U hardware is too weak to the point to think that Nintendo made a mistake... i live in Japan and i don`t know anyone who wants to buy a WiiU... Nintendo is just more of the same... Mario`s, Luigi`s, Wario`s games gets launched one after another to the point the people lost interest in it... and Zelda is too old school for hardcore games...

WiiU is popular with Families and women, but none of them wants to spend money with a Mario game every month...and for children... the parents just go for the 3ds because it`s cheaper... and many people think the WiiU is just a Wii with a tablet controller, showing that Nintendo has made a mistake with the name too

Nintendo fans can say otherwise but in reality, nobody cares about the tablet controller anymore... and hardcore gamers don`t want to play Mario or Zelda... they will just wait for a PS4 or Xone... that`s the reality... just fans of Nintendo games will buy a WiiU

Nintendo still has some of the greatest exclusive games. The obvious next gen best choice is to buy a PS4 and once the Wii U price drops get it as the second console. No need to buy an Xbone to play the same PS4 games but a few.

Thus I am sure Patcher is wrong. Again.

I love it how Nintendo haters just come here to troll. I remember last year how the 3DS was being bashed on but a year later, after being highly successful and releasing worthwhile games, these same haters are nowhere to be found when discussing the 3DS. Sweet silence from defeat

@MERGATROYDER In terms of what? Sales? You cannot compare a console that has been out for 8 months to consoles that have been out eight/seven years respectively.

@bluespire1 Whether or not it was arrogance, it was stupidity and it has hurt them. Now the pressure is on Nintendo to start releasing first party titles. Pikmin 3 is the first game out the blocks and that's been eight years + in the making, I'm excited for it and I cannot wait to get my hands on it.

Makes you wonder. What WOULD happen if NINTENDO had to give up making consoles? Would they become a 3rd party developer, or sell to someone like Disney?

I said in 1 year. One year from now, I don't see the Nintendo Wii U having more sales than the other two systems. They don't have a lot support from gaming companies and are destined to become the new "Sega".

I'm a huge fan of Nintendo (Legend of Zelda, Super Mario, SSB, etc.), but they don't have a chance. This might be one scenario where PS4 and Xbox One eclipse them in just one year (the Wii U).

No disrespect, but I don't even know a person with a Wii U, though I haven't played any system in awhile too (purchasing the PS4 this year). I still forget that it's even out right now, and that is so sad.

Back when I was the closest I will ever be to being a “fan boy”, is when I was a SEGA gamer. I owned every system they made outside of the master system. When the Dreamcast was launched it was one of the most impressive systems I have ever seen up till that point, from the controller design to the possibility of what SEGA was going to do with it, I was excited, and a year later SEGA was done and you could for the first time ever, play a SEGA produced and made game on a Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony system. My SEGA fan boy heart was dismayed, but the adult gamer in me was born. I say all of this because I also love history and for the gaming community; it’s going to repeat. Interesting tid bit about the Dreamcast is that its day one sales were record breaking, no one ever fathomed SEGA not making console anymore; likewise no one every thinks that Nintendo would ever produce a game for another system other than their own. I can’t tell the future, but I am willing to bet history is going to repeat.

@gobluebuckeye Really, while I empathize with your past as mainly as a SEGA gamer (I was also a fan of SEGA back then), this whole WiiU/Dreamcast comparison that people keep reaping is shallow and misguided.

The Dreamcast wasn't SEGA's problem, their problem was more complex. SEGA had previously invested on too many failed consoles/accessories which wasted lots of resources. I don't need to mention those, everyone knows about them.

Also, and this is one of the things people don't usually remember, SEGA was strongly invested in the arcade business. They were born in the arcade and "entertainment-machines" business and a big part of their business was on the arcades area (remember how a lot of their console games were arcade ports?), but the whole arcade business at the time was on rapid decadence.

Also, because SEGA developer teams were so invested on arcade and arcade ports, they were used to creating games more fit for the 4th and 5th gen consoles. Games were becoming increasingly larger (and consequently easier) after CDs replaced cartridges - and longer, easier games are the opposite of arcade games.

Actually, Dreamcast was one of the best hits SEGA could make, almost everything about that console was good/correct: it didn't cost much at launch, was launched with a great software library, was easy to develop for, had innovative features (we could mention great online features and the VMU as examples) and was launched ahead of the competition.

The Dreamcast was a success at the time, but SEGA continued to make a few mistakes (like how much money the spent on Shemue) and was already on a weakened state. Then the company then changed "heads", and the new SEGA president decided for the drastic change in the company: they would abandon the Dreamcast and stop making consoles. But not because Dreamcast was a failure, but because they were broke and didn't have any more money to invest.

So, if you look well, the history of SEGA and Dreamcast is the exactly opposite of what we're seeing now with Nintendo and WiiU:

Nintendo left the 7th as a very strong company with loads and loads of money. They're thriving on their "other business" aside from home consoles, the portable market (unlike SEGA was at arcades). And the WiiU, unlike the Dreamcast, is having a tough time on these first six monts - but let me remember you that six months isn't really much. Other consoles also had a tough first year and managed to become great consoles. And Nintendo has money to invest.

So, once again, the comparison between SEGA-Dreamcast and Nintendo-WiiU couldn't be more misguided and farther from the truth.

@gobluebuckeye It is actually a hope of mine that Nintendo does indeed go the route of Sega. They are a company that's time has passed when it comes to console development.

If they are committed to motion gaming they have that on the other two next gen consoles. If they are committed to family friendly games and "fun" their games will be well received on either of the next gen consoles.

They are as we speak for all intents and purposes the ONLY publisher developing games for their console. They can't survive without the licensing revenue necessary to make console development profitable. As a lifelong gamer Nintendo has some of what I consider some of the industry's most iconic and beloved character franchises. But their consoles have lagged behind and aren't giving us anything that can't be done for their games on a competing console.

Nintendo just give up the ghost. It's time to really bring your games to the masses. Not just my 55 y/o MIL who hasn't played her Wii in over 3 years.

@dummpymonkey123 @CraZed__ @gobluebuckeye What is 'Next-Gen' about the WiiU? Let's see. Extremely outdated hardware. Weak online infrastructure (try exporting your legacy games from Wii to WiiU and hope you don't have a disconnect from the servers during the process) Expensive second screen controller with a outdated touch screen and support for only ONE at a time. Mario, Mario , Mario, Mario. Selling fewer units than the PS Vita. On and on and on. Yeah sounds like they are setting the console standards to me.

Look Mr. fanboy apologist, as I stated before you decide to launch a tirade I never said they would fail as a company but there is NO way you can say the WiiU is anything but a colossal flop at this point. But of course I'm just an idiot right?

Bottom line is I think Nintendo needs to put the Wii and their home consoles to rest and focus on wht they are actually good at these days. Making games. Maybe then they wouldn't have to bastardize Mario and Luigi by having to make 90 different variations to keep their consoles alive.

No one ever said Nintendo needed to fold up shop and shutter its doors. They just need to switch their focus. The WiiU is a failure just not as much as your limp outrage at my saying so.
