Pac-Man munching on Wii

This week's Euro Virtual Console lineup adds NES edition of arcade classic to the downloadable slate.

European Wii owners have three more games to get their teeth into this week. First up is the '80s arcade classic Pac-Man, which was released on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1993. One of the best known games of all time, the munching yellow circle must eat all the snacks in a series of mazes while avoiding bumping into the ghosts.

Next up is Actraiser, a 1990 Super Nintendo title which combines side-scrolling platform action with a god-sim. Gamers play deity The Master, on his mission to restore the world through reclaiming six lands. Each level consists of a platforming section, a boss battle, and then a simulation part.

Lastly this week is Bonk's Revenge, described by Nintendo as a "comical platformer." The game was originally released in 1991 on the TurboGrafx-16. The 2D platform game was developed by the Red Company and features the caveman Bonk: a character that has an amusingly large, bald head, which he uses to head-butt enemies out of the way.

Pac-Man costs 500 Wii Points (approx £3.50), Actraiser costs 800 (£5.60), and Bonk's Revenge costs 600 (£4.20).

There are much better versions of Pac-Man available. But I hear Actraiser is great.

zzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZ @ Pacman. Come on Nintendo, get some decent games released on the VC.. or more importantly, commercially.

Seriously, Pacman? For $5? Am I the only one who finds that a little insulting? You can play pac-man for free as a flash game on any number of websites. I dunno, that just doesn't seem like a very logical purchase to me.

Well Pac Man is a classic but it has been released several times on different compilations already so it's not very exciting. Don't know much about Bonk's Revenge but Actraiser seems to be a good game.

The NES version of Pac-Man? Is it really that hard to get the arcade version like on XBL? Or better yet, an actually accurate emulation of the original?

You know, I can list at least a dozen top-selling NES, Super NES, & TG16 titles that have yet to see the light of day. But they keep releasing stuff like this. Bonk's Revenge is the best of this group, hopefully to see the US next week. But Pac-Man? Cmon....how many other consoles have this emulated in one way or another??? How about Tetris? Dr. Mario? Super Mario 2 (or 3)? Yoshi's Island? Ghosts & Goblins (the NES version)? Maniac Mansion? Devil's Crush? Dead Moon (TG16)? Come on, Nintendo....you can do better than this.

That version of "Pac-Man" should be avoided. This is the Tengen version of the game and neither it or the older Namco Museum version is the real game. I would suggest buying Namco Museum's 50th Anniversary or getting the XBLA 360 version of Pac-Man that I have. These were done by Digital Eclipse and are perfect emulations. The patterns I used 25 years ago work flawlessly. Same goes for Ms. Pac-Man. Of course, ActRaiser and Bonk's Revenge are no-brainers. Great games worth their prices.

You lucky Europeans. I bet it'll take them several months before they port ActRaiser onto American Wiis.

If only games that allow multiplayed would be edited to be playable online. I prefer to get them free online otherwise, it's not like the autorities cared about emulators of 10 years old games anyways.

Actraiser? Hell yeah. That game alone makes this latest vc update worthwhile. The Bonk series is always fun. Pacman seems overpriced.

Worst... headline... EVER. That being said, Nintendo's Virtual Console is disappointing... which is fine because it's overpriced anyway. I'll stick with Super Paper Mario, thanks. I'm also thinking about tracking down an N64 so I can play for a couple of bucks what people are paying 10 for... but with no rumble.

Dude, Actraiser is a Square game, too. I'd say SMRPG is pretty likely at this point. Of course, what Square really needs to release on the VC is The Secret of Mana! On a side note, how come the European VC releases are so much better than the ones we got in the States this week?

As much as I'd like to see it, SMRPG would be hard to get because Square developed it. Then again, we DID get DKC. And Europe got Punch Out? I want it, too!

Good but I think Pac-Man is way too expensive... Instead, wait 'til Namco releases another compilation, and it would be cool if they released Namco Museum 64 for 1000 Wii Points.
