Nvidia RTX 3090, 3080, 3070 GPU: All Specs, Prices, And Release Dates Detailed

During a livestream, Nvidia officially detailed its next-gen GPU under the Ampere architecture.

Nvidia revealed its new RTX 3000 line of Ampere-powered GPU earlier this month, featuring the RTX 3090, 3080, and 3070 cards. The new 3000 series is the second generation of RTX graphics cards that will run features like real-time ray tracing with much higher performance than current RTX cards. Here's what we know about each card so far, including specs, price, release date, and more.

For first-hand impressions, don't pass up the chance to read our review of the RTX 3080, which called it a "powerful video card with big generational jumps."

Now Playing: Which Nvidia 30 Series Card Is Right For You? (RTX 3090, 3080, and 3070)

Nvidia RTX 3000 Series Price And Release Dates

The RTX 3080 is set to launch on September 17 for $700 USD, and the RTX 3070 was also revealed with a release window in October and a price of $500. The massive high-end card, the RTX 3090, is said to be capable of 8K resolution at 60 FPS performance--the RTX 3090 will launch on September 24 and pricing starts at a whopping $1500. RTX 3000 series pre-orders are not yet available, but Nvidia's website does have a "notify me" button if you're eager to place an order. Traditionally, a new line of GPUs sells out quickly when they first go up for pre-order, and that could easily be the case here due to Nvidia's surprisingly aggressive pricing.

Nvidia RTX 3000 Series Specs: 3090, 3080, and 3070

For the full technical specs, you can check out our table below for the important details on the Founders Editions of the new Ampere cards. That includes power supply requirements: The 3070 calls for a 650W PSU, while both the 3080 and 3090 need a 750W PSU. You can also get a look at the dimensions of each, with the 3090 measuring in at more than 12 inches long and requiring three slots. All three cards support HDMI 2.1.

Compared to the Turing-based RTX 2080, the Ampere-based RTX 3080 will be built with 30 shader-TFLOPS (2.7x), 58 RT-TFLOPS (1.7x), and 283 Tensor-TFLOPS (2.7x). Plenty of other details were given in Nvidia's reveal video, which you can watch a clip of below.

We also got a sneak peek at what performance of an Ampere-based RTX card will perform compared to current-gen cards, and the gains are shown to be significant. Nvidia claims that the RTX 3080 generally performs twice as fast as the RTX 2080--the folks at Digital Foundry did a hands-on preview testing relative performance and came away with around 70% to 90% performance increases depending on the game and situation. The more budget-friendly RTX 3070 is even said slightly outperform the RTX 2080 Ti and at about half the price, too. The beastly RTX 3090 is said to be 50% faster than the enthusiast-tier Titan RTX card. The graph below compares Turing and Ampere performance across a number of games, including Control.

These new RTX 30-series cards are built with a new cooling system, featuring fans on both sides of the board that are pushing and pulling air in both directions independently to better manage temperature. Nvidia claims that these card will run cooler and quieter than RTX 20-series counterparts. As for the Founders Edition board design, here's a look at the new RTX 3080 video card itself:

No Caption Provided

The Ampere architecture comes off the heels of the Turing-based RTX 20 series which first introduced real-time ray tracing and AI capabilities in graphics hardware. Those video cards feature multiple processing cores (RT Core and Tensor Core) to manage the heavy workload and make things like high-performance ray tracing in games and DLSS (AI-based supersampling).

Also during the Nvidia stream, we learned that Fortnite will add ray tracing and DLSS support on PC. The company also showcased Cyberpunk 2077's ray tracing effects and shared a Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War trailer to show off ray tracing. Black Ops Cold War will be a cross-generational and cross-play release, with players able to enjoy the game together regardless of platform. It's out November 13.

Well, seeing all the PC imposters/console fanboys in full damage control, you know that Nvidia just pulled a complete slaughterfest of the so-called "next-gen" consoles before they even launched.

Just suck it up plebs, it's not like you ever had a chance...

@WESTBLADE85: You clearly haven't seen Ghost of Tsushima in action....

I just got it. And you know what? If a base PS4 is capable of graphics like that, without making my console sound like a jet engine the way God of War does, then who gives a **** about the 3090? Or even the 3070? If this is what we can expect from optimized console titles going forward, then there is really no reason to care about fancy shmancy PC graphics cards. Games look pretty frickin' amazing already.

As far as I'm concerned, the main reason for getting a top tier graphics card at this point is so that you can do VR without vomiting.

@Barighm: Ghost of Tsushima is 30FPS, even on the PS4 Pro. So the game will look like crap no matter what.

@Barighm: Ghost of Tsushima is old news, everyone already platted it including me, the graphics look nice but if it would have been on PC with true 4K then that would have been something amazing.

PS: didn't see your comment was 10 days old else I wouldn't have bothered with commenting. Gamespot reusing old articles always, facepalm

You clearly don't realize I have a PS4 Pro just for the 1st party exclusives (save for the VR shovelware)... And yes, it looks ass compared to my PC which is hooked up to the exact same TV.

See? Unlike most of you fanboys I just don't assume things based on Youtube -> I have direct comparison of both.

thing is, in 2-3 years, nvidia may even have the 40xx cards out and these "next gen" consoles will look even more dated... all the while the 40xx cards likely will be dishing out 120fps+ at 4k or higher without breaking a sweat.

So glad I'm not a console fanboy, I would probably have ended myself already over this reality. The consoles aren't even out yet and will be basically expensive paper weights at release.

@WESTBLADE85: You know what I can't do on your glorious PC? Play Bloodborne or Last of Us 2, which is why I'm getting a PS4 in a few days. Never mind all the multi-platform games that are either sh!tty ports (like Nier: Automata), don't run properly anymore (GTA IV) or that won't even launch, period (Assassin's Creed III). I spent the better part of a week one time trying to get games to run than actually playing. It's not all sunshine and pretty bunnies over there.

@sausage_n_eggs:

1. And you can't play MS Exclusives on PS4. PC overall has the most triple A games due to having both MS and Sony exclusives that do not go to each other, while having it's own exclusive genres.

2. Most multiplats are shitty on PS4 and better on PC. lol 30 fps and low settings. Yikes!

3. I'll be playing the significantly better version of games for the next 8 years like I did for the last 8 years. Have fun on low fps and low settings, again. With less AAA games to play, worse online, no UW support, etc.

@zaryia: I'd rather have Red Dead Redemption 2 at 30fps on PS4 than not run at all on PC. I bought the game on Steam and had to get a refund within an hour. Honest to god I've spent more time with Bloodborne than I have with every game in my Steam library combined. Different Strokes and all that, but it seems that you PC Masturbators have to piss on consoles every chance you get. I'm just pointing out a few realities.

@WESTBLADE85: Whatever, dude. You're the one who opened your giant trash can to say that PC "imposters" and console fanboys were in full damage control because Nvidia released a new graphics card (because no one expected that, right?). But the PS5 isn't causing a lot of noise right now because of it's GPU, but because of it's custom SSD that has been touted as "better than anything you can buy on PC for the amount of money right now". I'm sure your games will always look better on your $2,000 PC but I'm not all that invested in this silly pissing match since I'm buying a PS5 for the same reason I bought a PS4, exclusive games. You don't see me going over to Nintendo Switch land and pissing on their parade over graphics.

Well, PC imposters ARE the Sony fanboys pretending to have a PC in order to underplay the PC platform (also known as fakeboys) and in terms of the damage control: well, why did you bother with an article that is entirely PC hardware centric and then had to enter the comment section and preach about your little console?🔥

@WESTBLADE85: You're really grasping at straws to win this silly argument and pretending that you didn't initiate this console flame war. I'll let you have it. I've better things to do with my time than argue with geeks. You clearly haven't left your basement in years, I suggest you go see a psychiatrist, you're seeing PS4 fanboys in your Cheerios.

@WESTBLADE85: He is correct you made the first comment out of the blue about an console. Now before you get antsy I own 6 complete systems and I also own consoles. Some people do not give an s++t about this competition between an console and an PC each one has it strengths as well as its own weaknesses and there are reasons one would buy an console versus an PC and vice versa. Both are doable for me and they serve it purpose. Again you started it and the thing can try to do is finish it if you can.

@sausage_n_eggs: Yeah man. It's all about the games. I generally prefer PC over console for any game it's possible for, but if I didn't own a PS4 last generation, I would have missed some of the best gaming of the generation.

@emmanuelguerrero: These cards are designed for 4k. The 3080 and 3090 without a doubt can do 4k at max settings with 100+ fps for likely any game available this year. That's being modest. Of course if every other part isn't bottling it.

@xDaishi: ideally yes. But they are mostly designed around RTX performance. You can reach desirable fps with RTX on, but I wouldn’t go as far as saying 100fps. Thats a stretch. Maybe with DLSS tricks, but ill wait and see to believe it.

The 3090 will smash everything though. I dont doubt it.
