Nvidia revealed its new RTX 3000 line of Ampere-powered GPU earlier this month, featuring the RTX 3090, 3080, and 3070 cards. The new 3000 series is the second generation of RTX graphics cards that will run features like real-time ray tracing with much higher performance than current RTX cards. Here's what we know about each card so far, including specs, price, release date, and more.

For first-hand impressions, don't pass up the chance to read our review of the RTX 3080, which called it a "powerful video card with big generational jumps."

Now Playing: Which Nvidia 30 Series Card Is Right For You? (RTX 3090, 3080, and 3070)

Nvidia RTX 3000 Series Price And Release Dates

The RTX 3080 is set to launch on September 17 for $700 USD, and the RTX 3070 was also revealed with a release window in October and a price of $500. The massive high-end card, the RTX 3090, is said to be capable of 8K resolution at 60 FPS performance--the RTX 3090 will launch on September 24 and pricing starts at a whopping $1500. RTX 3000 series pre-orders are not yet available, but Nvidia's website does have a "notify me" button if you're eager to place an order. Traditionally, a new line of GPUs sells out quickly when they first go up for pre-order, and that could easily be the case here due to Nvidia's surprisingly aggressive pricing.

Nvidia RTX 3000 Series Specs: 3090, 3080, and 3070

For the full technical specs, you can check out our table below for the important details on the Founders Editions of the new Ampere cards. That includes power supply requirements: The 3070 calls for a 650W PSU, while both the 3080 and 3090 need a 750W PSU. You can also get a look at the dimensions of each, with the 3090 measuring in at more than 12 inches long and requiring three slots. All three cards support HDMI 2.1.

Compared to the Turing-based RTX 2080, the Ampere-based RTX 3080 will be built with 30 shader-TFLOPS (2.7x), 58 RT-TFLOPS (1.7x), and 283 Tensor-TFLOPS (2.7x). Plenty of other details were given in Nvidia's reveal video, which you can watch a clip of below.

We also got a sneak peek at what performance of an Ampere-based RTX card will perform compared to current-gen cards, and the gains are shown to be significant. Nvidia claims that the RTX 3080 generally performs twice as fast as the RTX 2080--the folks at Digital Foundry did a hands-on preview testing relative performance and came away with around 70% to 90% performance increases depending on the game and situation. The more budget-friendly RTX 3070 is even said slightly outperform the RTX 2080 Ti and at about half the price, too. The beastly RTX 3090 is said to be 50% faster than the enthusiast-tier Titan RTX card. The graph below compares Turing and Ampere performance across a number of games, including Control.

These new RTX 30-series cards are built with a new cooling system, featuring fans on both sides of the board that are pushing and pulling air in both directions independently to better manage temperature. Nvidia claims that these card will run cooler and quieter than RTX 20-series counterparts. As for the Founders Edition board design, here's a look at the new RTX 3080 video card itself:

The Ampere architecture comes off the heels of the Turing-based RTX 20 series which first introduced real-time ray tracing and AI capabilities in graphics hardware. Those video cards feature multiple processing cores (RT Core and Tensor Core) to manage the heavy workload and make things like high-performance ray tracing in games and DLSS (AI-based supersampling).

Also during the Nvidia stream, we learned that Fortnite will add ray tracing and DLSS support on PC. The company also showcased Cyberpunk 2077's ray tracing effects and shared a Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War trailer to show off ray tracing. Black Ops Cold War will be a cross-generational and cross-play release, with players able to enjoy the game together regardless of platform. It's out November 13.

Sounds exciting. I'll wait until the drivers stabilize along with the inventory. ....plus I don't have the time or patience to hang with the F5 spammers on launch day.

I am a console and a laptop gamer (haven't got a pc game in a while). Time for me to get a real computer and the 3070, I am thinking itx case, but if I go 3080 then it would be. I did some video editing and the laptop blows and now the fan is so noisy i have sent it in for repair. Plus architecture needs rtx (raytracing). Raytracing isn't the distance future, I think it is now; cyberpunk 2077 will shows what raytracing is all about. I will also get next gen console too, the ps4 pro is anicent technology, ancient...

@xophaser: There are mini ITX cases that can house graphics cards up to 13 inches, it should be no problem for you getting an RTX 3080 that can fit.

@NoodleFighter: I need to think about it, but leading toward the Enthoo Evolv Shift Air ITX. Plus I might not have that much cash with a new built. RTX 3070 looks like the most I will spend.

GPU consumes twice as much more power than the entire XBOX ONE series X. How is a PC cost effective? Not paying the electricity bill?

@systemoverload: PC isn't cost effective. Just like a Porsche or Ferrari. You're getting it because it's better, and paying more due to that.

@sladakrobot: Yeah, but nobody looking for a fuel efficient car goes out and buys a Ferrari. You buy a Ferrari to go fast, because that's what a Ferrari is for.

@mogan: its not that simple with Ferraris...you cant just buy an Enzo like that. In order for you to buy some of the top line models you need to owned some other Ferrari cars before.

Add to that the insurance, you pretty much need a garage, mandatory maintanance and ofcourse gasoline costs. Onrs arent buying those cars coz of power, ones do that to show they can throw money of the window just coz lol

    • I'm for RTX 3090 or nothing. If that's what it takes to be the most powerful GPU of this generation, so be it.

The prices are too low how can I feel good about being ridiculously price gouged buying these cards at this price point?

I can't wait to see 3070 vs 3080 in benchmarks.

I mostly leaning to a 3070 unless the 3080 is significantly faster... if its only like 10% faster, the 3070 choice is clear then since no reason to get a card more expensive and using 100 watts more power for so little.

This is killer stuff. Apparently, you have to go back to the 6600 series to find a release where the lowest end new GPU beats the top end from their last generation and that's what the 3070 does to the 2080...by a longshot. The 3090 is just a ridiculous beast. I can't wait to see AMD's answer. It's a good time to be a PC nerd.

@Keivz_basic: I don't think so. LinusTechTips on youtube said the last time the third tier card of a new release beat out the top tier card from the previous release was the 6 Series. I tend to believe him given his solid history of expertise.

This is the first time i've seen nvidia make a cooler that probably would be fine to buy with decent thermals and noise. My old 680 gtx was a reference cooler, kinda loud when running 100% so this is good they've really thought this through more.

But i think i'll still wait for second market makers like Evga/Asus/MSI etc and see what they make.

I hope these GPUs will stay at the MSRP, one of the reasons I never even got a 2080 card was because price/performance was never reasonable enough to buy so I just stuck it out with my 1080 waiting for this day. The 3070 could be the next magical "value/performance" card like the 970 was... i say value because if you look at its massive performance jump from the previous generation card, its not a bad deal

Gonna wait for the versions with 16gb of ram, cause I already fill up 12, and I’m not spending that much on the 3090.

Nvidia cards are clearly not about looks and if you looking for RGB's goodness then you better up just wait for AORUS, ASUS, MSI and EVGA to drop their own versions of their cards. MSI always had the best looking cards so probably wait for them to see what they got to offer before making a decision. but 3080 is the one that i will be looking for earlier next year.

@angrycreep: While I usually do wait for EVGA...I tend to like their products the best...I'd say these cards actually do look pretty nice. I like the simple, understated, smooth black aesthetic. I've also been sort of growing away from the whole "everything needs to have neon lighting" thing. Not every build has to look like a rave in a box.
