Epic Games announced today that is has started work on an all-new Unreal Tournament game. Interestingly, the Unreal Engine 4-powered game will be entirely free when it's released. Not free-to-play, completely free, Epic Games said. A "small core team" is currently working on the game, which is coming to Windows, Linux, and Mac.

Development on the game began today, May 8, Epic Games said. The studio plans to develop the new Unreal Tournament game "in the open," as a collaboration between Epic Games, Unreal Tournament fans, and Unreal Engine 4 developers. "The game will be true to its roots as a competitive FPS," Epic Games says.

Epic Games cautioned that it will take "many months" until the studio has a build of the game that's playable. "This is real development from scratch," the company says.

"We'll eventually create a marketplace where developers, modders, artists, and gamers can give away, buy, and sell mods and content. Earnings from the marketplace will be split between the mod/content developer, and Epic," Epic Games said. "That's how we plan to pay for the game."

"A lot of this is brand new for Epic, and we don't yet have everything figured out. Things will probably definitely go wrong from time to time, and when they do, we'll have to work through them together. There will be a lot of tough decisions to make, and not every feature will make it into the game. But if you're a fan of Unreal Tournament, a UE4 developer, or a future modder--or if you just want to learn how we make games--we hope you'll join us. It's going to be fun."

Today's Unreal Tournament news was announced during a special livestream. It's a major surprise, as just two months ago, Epic Games cofounder Tim Sweeney said no new Unreal Tournament game was in development.

You can read more about the new Unreal Tournament game at its newly launched Wiki page and Unreal Engine 4 forums.

UE4 has been a massive letdown so far. I also have my doubts if this game will have the amazing gunplay of its predecessors hidden behind hours of grinding and paywalls.

<< LINK REMOVED >> UE4 is an amazing engine, there are very few games out now that use it but once all the games being developed using it now come out you will see what UE4 is capable of, hell I downloaded a few demos of the engine to use for benchmarking and man it looks good.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Hopefully it'll have the same learning curve as the UE 3, which got better with time. I'm just disappointed that the released games that made use of it don't look nearly as good as the competition, yet.

But that's by no means set in stone.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Absolutely, it was amazing to see how far UE3 has gone throughout the generation. I remember looking at ME 3's lighting effects and not believing it was running on that engine.

Haven't checked out Daylight yet, but Outlast looks okay, but not jaw dropping. Maybe the next Gears of War will provide that.

@vader501st @mkeezay22 Yeh for sure, but Daylight (one of the first games to use UE4) was made by a small development team, and I have real time demos like the UE4 reflections demo which runs at over 60 FPS and looks so amazing, Once some AAA developers use it they will bring out it's potential.

<< LINK REMOVED >> If it's the anything like the UE3 SDK it's certainly better to work with than others. I remember fooling around with that being very easy because the UI is streamlined and easy to understand.

That's a great upside to it.

even playing with the UDK 3 I have a way easier time making an area look and act properly, I haven't had a chance to use UE4 yet but it looks like it's just a way beter UE3 and the ease of use is what makes it so great.

Which is the exact opposite of the CryEngine.

As an old-time veteran of the original I can't say I'm super excited for this. UT2003 until UT3 failed to capture the essence of UT99 in my opinion. As if they tried to teach a new dog old tricks. I'd rather see the original revamped with remastered sound effects and packing UE4.

The modding however gets me excited again. Mutator and map making in UT got me into game development in the first place. Also, it better have dedicated servers.

I'm seeing it just as a tech demo for UE4. Content doesn't matter much for Epic. They want to show off the engine

Lol they say its "completely free" but then it says ull have to pay for content created by others!

So basically ull get a shell of a game just a few modes/levels and Epic just sit back and let other user devs create the content for them that ull HAVE to buy to have something decent and they rake it in for free! No thanks I played all the other UT's as well loved it, shame

You read and understand, I want to pay for a game that means full price one payment for a finished game and all the content that comes with it. Then other ppl sometimes create free mods that I can play. You know the old way, the way it worked before all this microtranaction shite which will mean to get anywhere near the amount of content that u would've got with a full original game ull be paying twice or more for it! Community created or not, paying lots of small amounts always adds up to lots more, its just more of the drip feeding

It all depends on just how much of a game we get upon rls will it reflect a normal game amount of content? I hope so we will see. I don't mind paying but loads of separate purchases can end up paying a lot more

<< LINK REMOVED >> The only change here is modders get the bigger pie of the money so they can fully commit to their mods if it's a good one. Unlike old times where people had to work for free without any option. They can still choose to do so, but not have to.

Microtransaction is when you pay for stuff that's already in the game files, don't mistake that for this.

<< LINK REMOVED >> If it was full price other content makers could still sell their content and it would cost even more, the game is free and so will most of the content created by people, how is that worse than a full price game that is exactly the same.
