Epic Games announced today that is has started work on an all-new Unreal Tournament game. Interestingly, the Unreal Engine 4-powered game will be entirely free when it's released. Not free-to-play, completely free, Epic Games said. A "small core team" is currently working on the game, which is coming to Windows, Linux, and Mac.

Development on the game began today, May 8, Epic Games said. The studio plans to develop the new Unreal Tournament game "in the open," as a collaboration between Epic Games, Unreal Tournament fans, and Unreal Engine 4 developers. "The game will be true to its roots as a competitive FPS," Epic Games says.

Epic Games cautioned that it will take "many months" until the studio has a build of the game that's playable. "This is real development from scratch," the company says.

"We'll eventually create a marketplace where developers, modders, artists, and gamers can give away, buy, and sell mods and content. Earnings from the marketplace will be split between the mod/content developer, and Epic," Epic Games said. "That's how we plan to pay for the game."

"A lot of this is brand new for Epic, and we don't yet have everything figured out. Things will probably definitely go wrong from time to time, and when they do, we'll have to work through them together. There will be a lot of tough decisions to make, and not every feature will make it into the game. But if you're a fan of Unreal Tournament, a UE4 developer, or a future modder--or if you just want to learn how we make games--we hope you'll join us. It's going to be fun."

Today's Unreal Tournament news was announced during a special livestream. It's a major surprise, as just two months ago, Epic Games cofounder Tim Sweeney said no new Unreal Tournament game was in development.

You can read more about the new Unreal Tournament game at its newly launched Wiki page and Unreal Engine 4 forums.

You actually better put it out on linux, and not give us that crap you did for ut3. Besides that, my windows os will still be happy. It's been long overdue.

Buying and selling mods seems like something that could have some serious legal ramifications, as there are always those mods based on existing IPs (i,e: Earth Special Forces, Exterminatus)

Yet "Development on the game began today, May 8, Epic Games said"

So Eddie that means until TODAY there was no game in development.

<< LINK REMOVED >> It actually all started from UE4 game developer community efforts to create there own UT,

<< LINK REMOVED >>

....but Epic stated that they won't able to use UT assets as well as name. Probably looking how far this project gone far and how much effort is in it, they rethink about inside he studio and decided to officially support those efforts by create team and officially start open UT project similar to what community wanted to make and explore new ways of game development in same time :)

This piques my interest, although we'll see how things turn out. Still, I've loved UT ever since playing UT99 for endless wasted periods in Web Design class, and UT2004 was even better, so I'm hoping this is more in the spirit of those two and not the disappointing UT3. It'll be a tough wait.

I really miss the chaos that is UT. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this one. May even dust off some levels I did for the UE engine waaay back when.

Yay, finally an FPS that's less about "Cover system, aim down sights, gritty "HD", carry max 2 weapons, realism" and more about "Circle strafe, rocket jump, carry 73 weapons at once and 9001 ammo for each, chaos"! There's been a distinct lack of such games from the big devs for years now.

Also, YAY LINUX VERSION!

@Red_hot_smasher That it's coming to Linux is the big surprise for me, not that another Unreal Tournament game is in development, lol. A PC exclusive across three different operative systems, that's not something you see every day. Not in the FPS genre and not from a franchise this established.

Great! It'll probably be done very soon. All the necessary bits and pieces (including bots) in the engine already. All they need is to do some level design

Not really a big fan of most mods. You find some that are decent every once a while but most are not worth anyone's time. People are going to end up paying way more than $60 when all is said and done.

I hope that whoever contributes content to the game would give it away for free - then "absolutely free" would be a truer statement than it is an exaggerated and wishful one.

(Yes, Eddie Makuch, you have wishful thinking there.)

<< LINK REMOVED >> I just don't trust developers when they say the word free nowadays. Look at Guild Wars 2, the die hards will argue day and night that you do not have to pay for anything but if you do the math you really do. You have the choice of spending what a Walmart employee could make in four hours or spend over forty hours trying to get it for free.

I know that will not be the model here but anyone who thinks they are going to seriously play this game and not spend anything are just being wishful. Even if you create content your not playing for free. Your spending time and resources creating something for the game you may not be equally compensated for.

This is such good news, I've just started mapping with UE4 (come over from Source) and this is just what I needed to give me the motivation to stick to it.

Completely free for the gamers, and they'll earn money through a marketplace planned for later on (which sounds like a good idea to me). Everybody's happy!

Considering how many games are already based on previous releases of the Unreal engine, this seems like a good idea for both developers and gamers.

If memory serves, use of the last Unreal engine cost $50k for small developers. Out of reach for small indies, but feasible for small studios. This potentially opens things up on a whole new level.
