New PlayStation Plus Subscription Launches In June With Three Tiers

PlayStation has revealed its Game Pass competitor, includes up to 700 games.

PlayStation has officially unveiled the next generation of PlayStation Plus, and it's going to be a little more complicated for newcomers. As expected, the relaunch of the PlayStation subscription service will combine the perks of PS Plus and PlayStation Now, and the highest level will offer some of the same features available on Xbox Game Pass. When the subscription launches in June, it will be available as three separate tiers: PlayStation Plus, PlayStation Plus Extra, and PlayStation Plus Premium. The Premium subscription will feature up to 700-plus games.

The standard PS Plus subscription will be rebranded to PlayStation Plus Essential. Despite the new name, it's functionally the same services. PS Plus Essential will cost $60 per year and feature the same perks, including free games each month, cloud storage, online multiplayer, and discounts during select sales.

PlayStation Plus Extra will cost $15 per month or $100 per year and features up to 400 PS4 and PS5 games. Sony's description of the Extra tier is a bit vague, but subscribers will be able to download the games in the library to their console to play. It'll include both first-party and third-party games. Considering the number of games in this tier, it sounds pretty much like a combination of PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now, which will be discontinued in June. Current PlayStation Now subscribers will be converted to PS Plus Extra subscribers at launch.

The most expensive of the bunch, PlayStation Plus Premium, will feature "up to 340 additional games" versus the Extra tier. PlayStation Plus Premium will cost $18 per month or $120 per year. The Premium tier's additional games appear to largely focus on the PlayStation back catalog, with original PlayStation, PS2, PS3, and PSP games available to play. PS3 games will be locked to cloud streaming, but at least some of the other backwards compatible classics will be downloadable.

The Premium tier comes with a couple other perks, including limited-time game trials and cloud streaming on PC. All three subscription tiers will be available on PS5 and PS4, though PS5 users will get access to more games.

PlayStation has confirmed a handful of PS5 and PS4 games that will be available to Extra and Premium subscribers at launch:

  • Death Stranding
  • God of War
  • Marvel's Spider-Man
  • Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • Mortal Kombat 11
  • Returnal (PS5 exclusive)

PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium will be available in Asia first, but it sounds like North American and European users will be able to subscribe in June as well. If you live in a region where cloud streaming isn't supported for PlayStation, you'll have a chance to subscribe to PlayStation Plus Deluxe for a lower price. Pricing details for the United States, Europe, UK, and Japan can be found below.

PlayStation Plus Essential

  • United States - $10/month | $15/quarter | $60/year
  • Europe - €9/month | €25/quarter | €60/year
  • United Kingdom - £7/month | £20/quarter | £50/year
  • Japan - Â¥850/month | Â¥2,150/quarter | Â¥5,143/year

  • Europe - €14/month | €40/quarter | €100/year
  • United Kingdom - £11/month | £32/quarter | £84/year
  • Japan - Â¥1,300/month | Â¥3,600/quarter | Â¥8,600/year

PlayStation Plus Premium

  • United States - $18/month | $50/quarter | $120/year
  • Europe - €17/month | €50/quarter | €120/year
  • United Kingdom - £13.49/month | £40/quarter | £100/year
  • Japan - Â¥1,550/month | Â¥4,300/quarter | Â¥10,250/year

Christmas, B-day, Father's Day... those are my only three chances to get a year long PS+ subscription if it's picked from the gift list. Other than that I buy per month, and that's only if I just have to play one of the PS+ games I have downloaded and I want to keep the Gamefly game I have for a bit longer. I need a more definitive game list before I even think about looking into PS+ Extra.

@conical: So you basically are saying that you happy paying 18 dollars a month for a lesser service and you also fine paying 70 dollars for first party games. lol! Sony loves you my friend. They are ripping you off and you accept that.

@angrycreep: yes exactly but little adjustment; not 18usd but it is 10$, think it yearly.. you already pay this money to gamepass with no exclusive at all but full of trash games.. so at the end I pay same money but at least I have chance to pay another 70 and play greatest games. On the other side even if you pay thousands, sorry you dont have access!

@conical:

Well let me start by saying that i own all but PS5 Sony consoles. I don't have a PS5 yet and i haven't been in any hurry to get one since almost all those games are still been release in PS4 too and i'm not paying 70 dollars per game. Maybe at the end of the year I'll get my PS5 when the new GOW drops, which is right now the only game that I'm interested about.

Secondly, you really are a Sony fanboy, no question about it. The nonsense that there is no games in Xbox is a fanboy like yourself thing of the passed. Right now at this very moment with exclusives both consoles are in the same vote and don't forget that there are 3 Microsoft made games that review very well with Tokyo ghost wire, Deathloop and psychonauts 2 in your beloved Sony console.

Another Microsoft game with Minecraft is also available in that platform too. at least one of those games were contender for game of the year award and deathloop won awards in that show too. Halo Infinite and Forza Horizon 5 and many more games are already set to drop this year and will continue to drop as we go.

Once the Activision blizzard deal finalized all the history of all those franchises which is a lot, will all be dropping to Xbox gamepass and that will include the likes of call of duty, crash bandicoot, world of warcraft and many other franchises. You can't tell me with a straight eye that you getting a better deal with a Sony subscription. Wether you would like to admitted or not, you will be paying far more and getting far less with Sony than Xbox. Good luck paying those 70+ dollars per game.

Try again fanboy.😎

@angrycreep: sorry fella i will jump in here, there are far more exclusives on PlayStation than Xbox right now and with respect you're missing a trick not owning one.

i own everything, I'm no fan boy and its hard to play everything that's great on all systems right now, however, Returnal, gt7, horizon forbidden west, even Elden ring (running better on ps5 than Microsoft, if you want to be picky) are some of the great titles already on the system.

You simply cannot understate how good Forza is or halo on the Xbox and game pass is indeed great, Sony have just got The ascent, again i really enjoyed that on Xbox, however not many exclusives there.

i will agree Sony are charging way too much for the equivalent of gamepass and should review it.

It depends on where you shop and when, some games are $70 plus dollars for exclusives, again dependant on how you buy them and where.

What you playing right now?

@itchyflop: the best way to play elden ring on console is on series x with a VRR display, even digital foundry have said this, the only way you get a solid 60fps on playstation 5 is if you play the ps4 version of the game on ps5 which whats the point in that. atleast with xbox you can play the series X version on a VRR display and not notice the drops in frame rate due to that technology.

@xnshd: Its ok to focus on one game that does run better on Xbox, it still doesn't draw from the fact Sony has way more games let alone exclusives right now.

I'm not saying the series x isn't great, it is for its exclusives, it just doesn't have many right now.

So if you could clarify the point you're making with respect to the conversation it may help me understand.

@itchyflop: i was making the point that you said that elden ring ran better on PS5 but thats only if you use the ps4 version of the game when in reality the series x runs it better on the current gen versions. also exclusives are subjective, i own a PS5, series x and switch. will be selling my switch soon since i think its a waste of plastic.

the PS5 i got for exclusives but even then i have ratchet and clank, demon souls, ghosts of tsushima and horizon 2 all unfinished because whenever i sit down to play them i get bored within 15 minutes.

exclusives in terms of whats better is completely subjective and only make up a tiny portion of what i actually play. over 90% of the games i play are multiplatforms, i would argue thats the same for most people. not many people get a console and use it as there primary console solely to play exclusives so for me they arent really even that big of a selling point on any platform.

what is a big selling point to me for a platform is the value you get from that platform and if you have by and large the vast majority of games available which both xbox and playstation both have the vast majority of games on both their systems.

so when choosing my primary console i don't really look at what exclusives it has i look at what machine gives me the best value and what has the best features and to me that is hands down xbox. i still have a PS5 for exclusives but like i said i can't even bring myself to play them for more than 15 minutes because i get bored and find the playstation ecosystem much worse than xbox.

i prefer the overall UI and navigation of xbox, the services it offers like game pass, cross buy, back compat (that they don't charge you for), xcloud and PC gaming and also things like VRR, FPS boost and resolution boosts on previous generation games as apposed to what playstation offers which for me in comparison is very little.

@angrycreep: if the only game you expect is gow at ps side then it is quite normal you go with gamepass.. my comment is for those who dont wanna miss those fantastic titles like ghost of tsushima, last of us, demon souls, spiderman etc each deserves goty.. gow is the last one for me to be a reason to prefer ps in fact.. no point in being a fan, better is better but sure it depends on preference if you really like a game such as halo, of course go on with gamepass..

@conical: No first party at launch and too much streaming your games. Are they gonna drop some money and effort to get 3rd party support in there, like microsoft is doing? With the best tier at 18 dollars, that's way too much money for not even including first party games at launch. Too much money for getting far less. another thing to throw in there, that this service will also not be anywhere as widely available as gamepass is. Which you can play basically anywhere that can at least run a web browser.

Stop smoking pot, is making you stupid.🙄

@doomsdayhell01: no matter 1st party exist or not, my comment already assumes all 1st party still require purchase.. none of these exclusives are reachable through gamepass so ps plus premium is an additional benefit to exclusives with 700+ regular or streamable games, great offer..

Can we stop with the subscription services?

From Xbox Live, PS Now, Nintendo online, and Gamepass. Gamers are already dropping $380 on service plans a year. That's an Xbox series S, a brand new video game, and an order of hot wings & beer. Every, single, year.

And I'm not even mentioning the 15 TV and movie subscription plans.

i can see you are dead against the idea of subscription services and thats fine. personally i have no problem with them and i see that it is clearly the way the industry is going and will be the future of this industry i guess thats unfortunate for you.

@xnshd: I'm not totally against them. I just find some of the exessive. Especially from some companies. Like Nintendo, Online is kind of a joke but costs as much as PSN & XBL. And both are light years better. A game pass is a good offer. But you have to pay for it alongside the Live. The same goes for This play station service plan with PSN.

At this point it makes you wonder, "Would I save more money being an old console, and buying the old titles instead of getting these classic game library services."

IDK. Maybe I'm more skeptical about it. Since I'm getting to the age where it may be weeks before I play a video game, because of all the work I have to do.

@illegal_peanut: so it sounds like what you are asking for is free online along side something like game pass. just buying game pass ultimate for what is it like £11.99 a month or something like $15 a month is a really good deal which that also includes the xbl that you mentioned. or on the other hand you could just do microsoft rewards and not pay for xbl or game pass ever again and just get it through your reward points.

thats what i have done. i got the £1 upgrade to ultimate back when it launched and i just had bought 2 years xbl gold through my reward points so i basically got 2 years of game pass for £1. now that is running out in may this year i currently have around 345,000 microsoft reward points to redeem and the amount you need for a year of game pass ultimate is 140,000 so i have enough and then some for another 2 years game pass ultimate for free.

At this point it's hard for Sony to make a compelling argument to give them money. They don't seem to want to invest in a cross-platform ecosystem. Until they do GamePass is going to be relevant while this service is not.

Wish Sony would just give me a minimal tier for online access and cloud storage only so I can play Demon's Souls a few months out of the year without feeling like I'm being ripped off.

They fail to realize that streaming as a mandatory isn't good because many ISP's impose a data cap.

I don't really see any benefits to this at all. I'll just stick with my regular, lowly subscription.

And the free God of War, I assume, is the PS4 GoW, not the new one. As a plus member now I get plus essential games which already has GoW in it. I own the game anyway, just saying.

What about all those leaks about combining the movie and TV side of things? Oh, come on...this is just lame. All they did was take existing services and pile them on top of the old price. There is no real increase in value here at all, just an increase in price proportionate to their services.

What a rip. They're not even trying to compete. Oh, well...this is no way affects my current plans.

Sony will still get millions of subscribers. I think its a good deal if I could actually get a PS5.

I have a PC with gamepass plus Epic so I really cant get to most of it anyway. Think what people need to do is work out in their minds what services they need througout the year. Tailor their spend accordingly.

The pricing is fine its just that subs starting to add up now.

@realitybites: they only have about 4 million playstation now subscribers, now sure this will have many millions more subscribers but thats only because they are now basically unifying plus and now so it combines the two.

that way they can come out and say they have X amount of subscribers but most people will not be subscribing to the higher tiers and will just be sticking with the lowest tier which is essentially just what playstation plus is now which has around 48 million subs.

so by doing this they can come out and claim that they have around 48 million subscribers yet really they have no where near that on their actual games subscription tiers. where as game pass which is separate from xbox live gold numbers actually has 25 million subscribers as of the last count.

Sounds like they're turning PS+ into a convoluted mess. So far you had to be subscribed for PS+ if you wanted to play online and for the occasional decent "free" game. And if there was something worthwhile available on PS Now (extremely rarely) you could subscribe to that for a month. But how is it gonna work now? Can you just upgrade to the higher tiers for a month when you already have the base subscription? Cause I see no reason to pay for the full thing for a full year when the games selection is no better than what PS Now has been offering so far. Which is very much what it sounds like.

The main issue of these subscription is that they fused the lacking PS+ service with the bad PS Now service. Streaming games suck and reflects poor quality control on part of Sony. Want to justify these jacked up prices? Port the PS1/PS2/PSP/PS Vita properly onto the PS5 and let us download them.

@cboye18: They practically just added the price of PS Now with PS+ without really adding anything new. It's no different than it was before. I can't believe they actually think people are dumb enough to see this as a "combined" service.
