Netflix goes disc-free on PS3 next week

Video streaming giant adding free dedicated app to PlayStation 3 October 18; new user interface, search functionality, 1080p resolution, 5.1 surround sound also coming.

In late July, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings announced to PlayStation 3 owners that come fall they would be able to defenestrate their streaming discs. Now, the executive has made good on that promise.

Netflix for PS3 flies to new heights next week.
Netflix for PS3 flies to new heights next week.

Starting Monday, October 18, PlayStation 3 owners will be able to download a free Netflix app and stream television shows and feature films without inserting the Netflix disc currently required to view content through the system.

In addition, the new Netflix app will arrive with a swath of new features and accessibility upgrades. The app will introduce a new user interface that promises a "much richer and faster browsing experience," as well as "dramatic improvements" over the current playback speed. Additionally, the new app will include a search feature, where users can seek out new programs.

Further, the new Netflix app will allow users to watch certain videos in 1080p resolution, listen to selections in 5.1 channel surround sound, and toggle on subtitles on select titles. According to Netflix, when the native app launches next week, the PS3 will be the "first consumer electronics device" to feature 5.1 channel surround sound capability on movies streamed by Netflix.

The PS3 will become the second console to host a dedicated Netflix app, following the Xbox 360. The arrival of the app will make the Nintendo Wii the only major console to require a disc for streaming playback.

Netflix for the PS3 was first announced in October 2009, breaking a year of exclusivity with the Xbox 360. It was implemented in November 2009 for the system.

Search feature? The disc already features that. I search up movies all the time on the PS3's netflix. It's nothing new. So, why do they bring that up? Oh well. At least I don't have to remember to take the disc with all the time when I move my PS3 around. Thats a plus for me!

I love the disc free feature, but I am more impressed about having a better UI with the PS3 Netflix. I found it to be good, but could be better. I think Netflix will make a disc free app for the Wii as the Wii was the last system to allow Netflix onto it; they are just doing it in order the systems received Netflix.

I'm already using it without the disc, but I live in Canada, so maybe we were their test bed market. I did need to enter a credit card even for the free 30 day trial. It works ok, but the selection north of the 49th sucks big time. Good thing I'm in the free trial - if they don't add more titles, I'll be ditching it soon. If it is the same app down south, don't expect too much from the search - its still not very useful and most titles are "not available" But I'm glad I don't have to use a disc, that would be a pain.

Disc-free Netflix on the Wii would certainly be welcomed...

I just got netflix and I love it even with the disc. This would make it so much more convenient though.

Whoa I just noticed that it's got 1080i and 5.1 surround streaming. None of the other platforms offer that. That's a big difference.

Cool, now I don't have to continue to remember where I placed that disc LOL Even more cool is that they're working on cleaning up the quality. I thought it was crazy that I could watch District 9 and it was gorgeous yet Law Abiding Citizen looked like I was watching somebody's low-res YouTube post LOL

I didn't mind much having to use the disc, but this is easier, so I'll take it.

netflix killed my 360 in its first year. i never seen the show lost before and seen i was able to watch all the seasons in hd on netflix. i then watch every season in about a 2 week span lol. and in between shows i would play games. so my 360 was almost never off. needless to say it got E74 a few days later but ms fixed it for free so i didnt mind to much. and discless netflix is a great feature for all systems.
