Netflix goes disc-free on PS3 next week

Video streaming giant adding free dedicated app to PlayStation 3 October 18; new user interface, search functionality, 1080p resolution, 5.1 surround sound also coming.

In late July, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings announced to PlayStation 3 owners that come fall they would be able to defenestrate their streaming discs. Now, the executive has made good on that promise.

Netflix for PS3 flies to new heights next week.
Netflix for PS3 flies to new heights next week.

Starting Monday, October 18, PlayStation 3 owners will be able to download a free Netflix app and stream television shows and feature films without inserting the Netflix disc currently required to view content through the system.

In addition, the new Netflix app will arrive with a swath of new features and accessibility upgrades. The app will introduce a new user interface that promises a "much richer and faster browsing experience," as well as "dramatic improvements" over the current playback speed. Additionally, the new app will include a search feature, where users can seek out new programs.

Further, the new Netflix app will allow users to watch certain videos in 1080p resolution, listen to selections in 5.1 channel surround sound, and toggle on subtitles on select titles. According to Netflix, when the native app launches next week, the PS3 will be the "first consumer electronics device" to feature 5.1 channel surround sound capability on movies streamed by Netflix.

The PS3 will become the second console to host a dedicated Netflix app, following the Xbox 360. The arrival of the app will make the Nintendo Wii the only major console to require a disc for streaming playback.

Netflix for the PS3 was first announced in October 2009, breaking a year of exclusivity with the Xbox 360. It was implemented in November 2009 for the system.

Netflix does kinda suck in Canada right now. Some of the "new" movies have been available for months at Blockbuster and on cable video on demand. For $8 a month, it's not bad though. There are a ton of kids stuff on there for my 2 year old to watch but if Netflix was supposed to revolutionize the home movie viewing market, this is a bit of a disappointment.

@ buying1999 Technically, PS3 had Home before 360 had the Avatar's in place, just the 360 released them before the Home beta went open. Plus, they both copied the Wii with their Mii stuff. The motion controller was also in development long before the Wii was even announced, so that's a moot point. Way to be a rumor mill, sir.

Yeah, damn that PS3 taking things the other systems already do and improving on them! It is about time this happened though. Seems like a good time to dump my gold subscription. Price going up for live, netflix getting better on PS3... Love my 360, but can't justify paying $10/mo when I can do it all for free on the PS3...

PS3 still playing the "Me Too" role. First they copied achievements (trophies), then avatars (home), then xbox live gold(psn plus), wiimote (move little pink ball thingy), now discless Netfilx. Not to mention still being in LAST place. Powwa of da cell...ROFL yeah, ok.

That's kinda strange... I don't know if it's because the service is different up here in Canada, but I always had disc-less streaming. Unless I'm thinking of a completely different thing here...

@jad206 Service must be different here than there then. I'll qualify my statement then to say that Netflix in Canada sucks at present. :)

who cares? I have a pc for all my movies for streaming,etc.. Everyone should use the ps3 for games, maybe they would make more games instead of relying on everything else to help it sale.

No point complaining about streaming. This is optional and second you have 3 different ways you can get movies. 1. You could easily do a monthly subscription of Netflix or 2. You could easily buy movies from the Playstation Store if you choose to. 3. You could just buy some Bluerays for Amazon if you don't like the streaming or digital thing. Although buying is so much better you get a hard copy and also a digital copy so yeah ^_^. (Least in some circumstances like Star Trek on Blueray and also the Dark Knight.) Anyway this is a nice update.

@jad206 Not sure if Netflix is the same or not here. We don't have the "DVD in the mail" service, just the download service. It's new within the last month. I love TV and movies, and their selection is crap, here at least. I tried a free trial account, and they don't have "Breaking Bad", "Rescue Me", "Dexter", or any of the half dozen HBO shows I like. Maybe it will get better, but it's a useless service so far. There's almost nothing as far as new releases go. I kept searching for one show after another and came up empty, or if they did have the show they didn't have the most recently released season (meaning I've already seen the few shows they have because they're old).

I never use the Netflix part of PSN, I've thought about grabbing a couple movies off PSN but so far haven't done it yet. As far as films on PS3 goes I've been too busy watching Survival Of the Dead, that's a good film.....

Good. I use the PS3 access to Netflix more than any other method. Just hope the new interface isn't designed by anyone who's ever worked for Xbox Live, cause if I see a freakin avatar anywhere ... that's it for Netflix.

Cool. I don't get the "streaming content sucks" comments. Maybe that was true a couple of years ago, but not anymore. Netflix keeps adding more and more movies for streaming. For example I currently have all three 'Godfather' films on my instant queue. That's not exactly crap there.

@Scream Idk if Netflix is different there in Canada or what, but I find every show I like, and some great movies with Netflix. If you don't like "Netflix" it isn't their fault, you just don't like movies/tv. @vicsrealms No, Xbox and Pc have Netflix/Hulu. Still no need for it.

Great news. The no-disc feature is nice, but the upgrades to the program are nicer, especially the new UI, which looks helluva lot more convenient than the current UI.
