Metal Gear Solid 5 dev defends Ground Zeroes length

"Are Journey and Dear Esther long?" Kojima Productions' Jordan Amaro asks.

No Caption Provided

The length of a game isn't necessarily associated with its quality. That's the message Kojima Productions designer Jordan Amaro has for fans up in arms about the recent news that you might be able to complete Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes in just one sitting.

"Are Journey and Dear Esther long? [Voltaire's 18th-century writing Candide] is like a hundred pages at most," Amaro said. "Yet they are masterpieces of video game and literature. This smearing will not stain and affect what we're aiming to achieve with MGS, the game industry in Japan, or video games as a whole."

Journey and Dear Esther might not be long games, but they sell for $15 and $10, respectively. That's below what Konami is charging for Ground Zeroes, which ranges from $20-$40 depending on platform and delivery choice.

"I want people to celebrate the new MGS like we used to. I'm not dismissing their concerns. But this [issue surrounding the game's length] has been trumped-up," Amaro said.

The game is a prequel to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which is said to be "hundreds of times larger" than Ground Zeroes. Konami hasn't set a release date for that game yet.

The length of Ground Zeroes isn't the only part of the game drawing heated debate. It's also been revealed that the PlayStation 4 version of the game looks "slightly better" than the Xbox One iteration, a point that Metal Gear Solid series creator Hideo Kojima reportedly agrees with.

Konami has yet to confirm whether or not there is a resolution or frame rate difference between the two next-generation versions, but it wouldn't be the first time a multiplatform game was visually preferable on Sony's console.

This story has been updated with additional comments from Amaro and adjusted to reflect his intent.

@deadpen I do think $40 is a bit pricey, but I think that option will only be sought after by hardcore MGS fans.

And I think there might be some hidden secrets and easter eggs to look for in the game as there usually are in MGS games and fans will definitely try hard to find those. Aside from that I think it might have a few more hours of gameplay to it.

I have nothing to go on but It seems silly for people to actually think this game will have only 2 hours of gameplay and nothing else to offer. Maybe I'm just too optimistic.

I don't mind the length so long as the game is priced accordingly. There's so many games nowadays that are inflated with useless padding. I'd rather have a short but sweet game than a long and tedious one. Still, at 2 hours' length the game should be $20 tops.

I laugh at all the whiny peasants who can't afford a $30 game.

Must be members of the PC beggar race.

<< LINK REMOVED >> $40 if you want next gen on disc.

It's not about the price, it's about value. If it was a 50 hour game for $40 it would be awesome value. If it was only a minute long, even you would say it's a rip off. Somewhere in between is a sweet spot, and each gamer determines what that spot is individually. For me, 2 hours of gameplay is not worth $40. I would need at least 6-8 hours for that game to be worth the price tag.

So it's not about how much money you have to pay for the game, it's about what you're getting in exchange for said money. In this case, it's not enough. Can I afford to pay $40 for it? Yes, but I don't want to. It's not good value.

The original MGS is barely nine hours with cutscenes, though.

If you want to compare your game to the quality of 'Dear Esther' and 'Journey' then you better be sure to back it up. Because a prologue that's being sold for $30-40 does not leave it off to a good start.

I think the casual consumer will be very annoyed to find that this isn't the entirety of MGSV, and the game's length wouldn't be so bad if it was reasonably priced. But it's not. No one wants to spend $20 an hour for campaign content. The extra missions should benefit the game as extra content and not pad it out to justify charging extra.

The article kills any defense in one sentence. The other two games cost 10 and 15 bucks, and if you want the MGS game on the next gen, which you probably do it will be 40 for a physical or 30 for a digital.

I agree that quality > quantity but price has to reflect the quantity. Hence why indie games that are this short are cheaper and just as much quality can be found in them. You can also get DLC for some games that's cheaper and longer that's also quality. It's a demo you're buying here that costs too much money for what it is and it's that simple.

Nice pulling that 5 hours out your ass. If dev comments are anything to go by there will be about 2 hours or side missions. And they'll be on the same map, so I can really see them not being utterly repetitive, right?

Just wait for the discount re-release before Phantom Pain releases. Or the bundle that will probably come out shortly thereafter.

Comparing your game with two others of the same length that sell for much less money than yours is going to is no way to win an argument.

Eddie mac had to point out the ps4 version is slighty better than the xb1, even though the article is about the length of the game.Im still gonna buy ground zeros because I admit I love Metal Gear Solid.People buy bluray movies which are priced 25 dollars and the length of some movies are two hours long. So i cant blame kojima for what he's doing.

If you buy it, you are helping to kill the gaming industry. If Kojima gets away with this crap, everyone else will do it, too. It will be just like when Activision jacked the prices for map packs for MW2 and set a new industry norm.

But I do agree that Eddie's shameless trollbaiting has gone far beyond ludicrous. I am questioning his mental health.

Ground Zeroes is literally the worst gaming-related deal in many years. It should be a $20 disc across all platforms. When you compare it to other offerings in the market, it's a terrible value. Unfortunately, video game prices aren't indicative of the market, as proven by Rogue Warrior and Skyrim having the same initial MSRP from Bethesda.

What Halo game--games, by the way, with substantial multiplayer components--did you finish in two hours?

@Kevin-V If you take in count multiplayer in Halo or COD, you should take in count side ops, challanges and other stuff in GZ, considering GI said to beat in two hours the MAIN MISSION, not the full content of the game. Bad comparisson... the game will still be too short overall for 30 bucks, but still a very bad comparisson, Kevin.

Except those games didn't cost 30 to 40 fucking dollars. Those games would have gotten bashed to hell and back if they cost as much as ground zeroes does. Not only that but Koji said the main Phantom Pain game would be delayed if GZ sold poorly too, it's like he's bribing people to buy GZ or holding TPP ransom.

I agree to a point that quality is greater than quantity but I don't want to shell out up to $40 for a 2 hour experience no matter the quality. If the game was $15 no one would care about the length.

They know fans will buy it anyway, and theres plenty of them to go around. Just look at MGS2, many literally bought ZoE just to access the MGS demo (tho ZoE was a good game).

They cant defend the pricepoint by comparing it to games that cost half. He might aswell just have said something stupid like "you cant put a price on art"

Hmmmm, It greatly depends if the game was optimized for its short length and offers good replayability, or if will feel like only the first 2 hours of a larger game.

Retail versions of arcade shooting games cost more than this and are 30 minute long. Still, you don't feel ripped off because that's pretty much how they should be.

If the game is designed just to be played once and leave players hyped for MGS : V, then yes, it's gonna be hard to justify the price.
