Massive Ubisoft Report Details "Frat-House" Culture Of Sexism And Abuse

A new report from Bloomberg writer Jason Schreier casts new light on the allegations that have surrounded Ubisoft in recent weeks.

Over the past month, Ubisoft has been embroiled in one of the largest scandals in industry history, with more than a dozen ex-employees alleging that the video game publisher is a haven of misogyny and sexual harassment. Now, Bloomberg News has published a lengthy report that reveals new details about the ingrained culture of toxicity at many of Ubisoft's studios, allegedly enabled by executives that prioritized family connections over complaints of misconduct.

One of the most upsetting anecdotes comes early in the piece. In the company's Paris headquarters, during a presentation of an important game led by a woman--who was out of the room at the time--chief creative officer Serge Hascoët pulled up a YouTube video of a French song that describes sexually explicit acts with a woman with the same name as the presenter, pausing it when she came back into the room. (Hascoët has since been removed from his position.) A racist anecdote from the publisher's Bulgarian office describes multiple staff members calling the Black Star Wars actor John Boyega a "monkey."

This culture of sexism seeped into the publisher's games. The report focuses on how it affected the Assassin's Creed series, stating that scripts were changed in development to focus more on male characters, particularly in Syndicate and Origins. According to the piece, Syndicate was supposed to feature the twins Jacob and Evie equally, through Jacob ultimately ended up with much more screen time. Origins' male hero Bayek was set to be injured or killed early in the game, and players would assume control of his wife Aya, but that changed over the course of development. The latest game in the series, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, originally only allowed players to control Kassandra, a woman. However, when members of the publisher's male-dominated editorial team said that a female protagonist wouldn't sell, players were ultimately given the choice of Kassandra or her brother Alexios.

In recent weeks, a number of employees have left Ubisoft in the wake of similar allegations, including a marketing manager and several executives named in the report. The creative director of the upcoming Assassin's Creed Valhalla also stepped down following accusations of infidelity.

Kind of surprised at the general "meh"-to-hostile reaction to this. Humanity has a history of mistreating each other. Guarantee you all of us have done it and will repeat it, but hopefully it's minimal and unintended bias on most of our parts, no matter our DNA. To call a man an animal because of his skin? To take away a woman's sense of professionalism? Not acceptable. You be the person who has these things done to you and see how you feel.

Maybe it's that you don't want to read about it here on a gaming site. Fine - skip the article. I'll stand up right now and say it's good to keep the dialog going; without these types of highlights there is no progress. Go read up on Wizards of the Coast, their lip service, and the recent events and fallout for proof.

All of you reading this have the potential to be good people. So do that. Respect each other. Be better.

We don't see things as they are, we see things as WE are. If you can't deal with women or have racist issues go the hell into business for yourself. If you can co-exist peacefully and be happy with it, even learn something from it, grab a seat at the table and build something better or stronger.

Seriously, there's no place or excuse for treating people like crap unless they earned it. Screw the "woke", it's about respect and dignity, how we're brought up and what we're taught. Do better.

Some years ago, I would've said that it kind of sounds like today's young folks (late 20's and under) are so soft that they can't be told "no" in any fashion by any executive or boss. But knowing how many people are assholes when under duress -- perhaps most especially bosses -- now I'm not sure if that theory holds up.

I can't blame anybody if they feel "harassed." I was a boorish supervisor myself, "bullying" subordinates around when I felt like they needed a taste of their own medicine (tbf, they took me for granted, rather than bully me outright).

lol this sounds like an 80's sci fi movie, and it is , we're 2020 yet it sounds like it happened in the 1950's. Infidelitey? really? what does that have to do with the workplace, and this in europe, paris, As a european myself I find that very hard to believe (not that i approve of cheating, I just never heard somebody had to step down for that, well at least not in the last 50-60 years or so)

@commander: they should have better explained that aspect (The Assassin's Creed Valhalla lead stepping down). That particular case he stepped down to deal with personal issues with his family. I think they were more or less trying to bundle in Assassin's Creed news together, not well handled by the recapper of the article or the news.

Stuff like this report is necessary because the industry needs an overhaul. I can't count the stories I've heard of sexism for m friends working in the industry. And they continue to do it because no one holds them accountable. It's happened with the movie industry, it's going to happen with gaming. People will make light of the issue, but any woman who wants to work in the industry has to put up with this BS.

@Pierce_Sparrow: i think we need to stop using terms like overhaul and reform etc. They are too big and will always evoke hostility instead of positivity. but i agree with sentiment ofc

Ubi Toronto was colloquially known to be a safe place for "bros", amongst the aspiring employee applicants I know. Toronto is home to several national game dev schools, which brush shoulders with the Ubi Toronto; my sister attended one such school, and I did volunteer focus testing at Ubi Toronto (and thus met other students or relatives of students). Some of them say as much.

Funny how the comments are open on this one, I wonder if GS thought this would be a golden opportunity for users to one sided-ly throw Ubi under a bus.

Aside from the horrific anecdotes, I'm not sure I buy sexism "seeping" into the games. If it does, it ain't just theirs.

This is Dumb AF, who cares? This SJW nonsense has to stop, just because our stupid millennials, believe in destroying American culture, and everything we've built in the last 250 years, doesn't mean other countries should be held accountable for the moronic views of social justice in the US.

Are they going to try and cancel French culture now too?

@alex33x: Agreed! Enough is enough. I’m a female gamer and have been playing a long time. I enjoy playing male lead and female lead characters. Who cares?

And if these people don’t like the company they work for, go find another job! We live in a free society. Quit forcing your culture onto everyone else, SJWs!

Oh, and to another commenter, just because a man is married and his wife had a baby, does not make him any less a virgin.

I don't tend to buy games with a female protagonist because I really can't identify myself from a female perspective. Having said that, I played Odyssey as Kassandra and really enjoyed it. She was much better than Alexios. Also, the voice actor for FemShep was much better.

@s9743469: I don't really have any issues identifying with female protagonists, as long as the games good or something I like, I'll get it.

Yes, Jennifer Hale killed it as FemShep. The male voice actor wasn't bad in my opinion, she was just so good.

@s9743469: So, now you can empathize with how I feel about white saviours, or how some women feel about playing stereotypical males (or how non-stereotypical males might feel about their tropic counterparts).

EDIT: I agree that Jennifer Hale was a "better" Shepard than Mark Meer, but damn both of them were so good, they single-handedly carried the character. Well, that would've been true if Shepard wasn't a really good implementation of player agency -- or as close as can be given the technological constraints at the time.
