Massive Ubisoft Report Details "Frat-House" Culture Of Sexism And Abuse

A new report from Bloomberg writer Jason Schreier casts new light on the allegations that have surrounded Ubisoft in recent weeks.

Over the past month, Ubisoft has been embroiled in one of the largest scandals in industry history, with more than a dozen ex-employees alleging that the video game publisher is a haven of misogyny and sexual harassment. Now, Bloomberg News has published a lengthy report that reveals new details about the ingrained culture of toxicity at many of Ubisoft's studios, allegedly enabled by executives that prioritized family connections over complaints of misconduct.

One of the most upsetting anecdotes comes early in the piece. In the company's Paris headquarters, during a presentation of an important game led by a woman--who was out of the room at the time--chief creative officer Serge Hascoët pulled up a YouTube video of a French song that describes sexually explicit acts with a woman with the same name as the presenter, pausing it when she came back into the room. (Hascoët has since been removed from his position.) A racist anecdote from the publisher's Bulgarian office describes multiple staff members calling the Black Star Wars actor John Boyega a "monkey."

This culture of sexism seeped into the publisher's games. The report focuses on how it affected the Assassin's Creed series, stating that scripts were changed in development to focus more on male characters, particularly in Syndicate and Origins. According to the piece, Syndicate was supposed to feature the twins Jacob and Evie equally, through Jacob ultimately ended up with much more screen time. Origins' male hero Bayek was set to be injured or killed early in the game, and players would assume control of his wife Aya, but that changed over the course of development. The latest game in the series, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, originally only allowed players to control Kassandra, a woman. However, when members of the publisher's male-dominated editorial team said that a female protagonist wouldn't sell, players were ultimately given the choice of Kassandra or her brother Alexios.

In recent weeks, a number of employees have left Ubisoft in the wake of similar allegations, including a marketing manager and several executives named in the report. The creative director of the upcoming Assassin's Creed Valhalla also stepped down following accusations of infidelity.

I would like to start out by saying that all of that is horrible and it is good that Ubisoft is cleaning house.

That being said, I am glad that Bayek was the main character. I liked him a lot more than Aya. And while Kassandra is the main character, barely anyone played her.

I really don't think that influence was that strong but defending asshat frat attitude isn't right. I hope no one claim this as a style of life that needs to be defended.

For fucks sake how is that sexist? Assassins Creed is roughly based on history I think they treat their females in game ALOT better then they were really treated in those time periods. Thought this was a serious allegation about sexual harassment in the workplace. And since when is infidelity a cause for firing someone? Since when is it anyone else's business?

Marketing based on demographics is not racist or sexist. If a male lead sells more you have every right to make a game with a male lead. You know what is sexist? Making a game or movie that has a male lead and changing it to female for no reason at all except to be inclusive.

@mattwoahyeah: and that matters why? Does it add any legitimacy to the parts of the article I mentioned? I could give a crap about ubisoft and damn sure dont care about high level executives. But I do care about innocent people getting punished.

Honestly don't care. What do you expect from video game makers, developers. Kinda expect childish immature behaviors. Then again did you keep cashing the checks? So its all good right?

@mattwoahyeah: it can be possible if you don't care about really damaging consequences and never be pointed out for it. Look at big media periodism for instance, they lied too much and it was profitable for a time. But now the consequences comes from the lies and people usually won't believe them if they try to reedem themselves (this is generalist, I'm not neccesarily poiting to CNN only).

Sorry for the cinism.

Ubisoft cannot make a game with a female lead, but pretends to treat both sexes equal. These half measures in order to make everyone happy aren't working. Commit to a single lead, make her female, and put her on the front of the box. We will still buy it and love it if it's a good game. I would have happily only have played Aya or Evie or Kassandra, and never known their male counterparts existed (They were better characters for the most part). It honestly doesn't surprise me that the company has harassment issues, as Ubisoft has been giving off the vibe of not understanding equality for a while now. Hopefully this is a shift towards growth in a positive direction.

I’m gonna get some hate for this but... are we surprised? One clip of dialogue from their male protagonists in any of the AC cut scenes and you can tell these guys think being an arrogant Frat douche is “cool” I always liked the games but once Ezio or especially the dude from Odyssey opened his mouth I would beg for a ‘skip cutscene’ button.

Schreier has done some good investigative journalism before, but this one feels a little "bottom of the barrel". There are always going to be a small percentage of bigots and jerks, and it's a good thing to call them out and remove them as they are a bad investment. A lot of these things are subjective though. Including more choices because the customers tend to want them? To say it's because of systemic prejudice is really reaching.

Ubi is huge, it's not surprising that they have bad actors, although the people up top not wanting a female protagonist is a bit weird. Female led games seem to sell fine and historically Assassins have been male and female. Even in their games they showed female Assassins

It should be rooted out for sure, the instances mentioned in these articles certainly aren't professional. While I don't think that workplaces should always be all corporate and no fun, things like this should certainly be addressed and punished.

"players were ultimately given the choice of Kassandra or her brother Alexios."

THAT'S a radical idea!!! Give players a choice.

The other choice is to not buy $hitty games.

Maybe France doesn't have sexual harassment in the workplace laws, but women can sue the $hit out of companies in USA for that.

@wtf_666: Unfortunately, when it comes to many, MANY gamers...not only do they buy hundreds of shittty games, they don’t even play the damn things all the way to completion.

Ubisoft is mainly supported by zombie gamers who don’t even play the games they buy.

@jsprunk: What you said is even more funny -- and also checks out with what I know -- when you consider that most games ostensibly don't sell well. So, the games that do sell in at least halfway decent amounts are likely to be treated as if the were "rentals", by their owners... if they deign to touch them. Steam transactions, for example, are often highly discounted sales piggy-backing on another (discounted) purchase.

PS4 and Nintendo Switch are good examples where gamers by all the exclusives they can, because they feel it's the stuff worth having the most (or only worth having), and yet don't realize half of the catalogue is probably not suited for their tastes (unless their tastes are all over the place). As an example, I am not that fussy for many JRPGs, so having P5 in my library is a bit superfluous; heck, I'd be happy with just Bloodborne, Shadow of the Colossus, Spider-Man, God of War or HZD. That's FIVE out of the myriad exclusives they have.I bought some games for NS (Binding of Isaac , Stardew Valley) that are not necessarily exclusive, but figured they'd be good additions to have, and I'm not in a hurry to complete them.

@Jarrkha: I mean, I think a lot of gamers have at least 10 games they will never stop replaying. But I find it just weird that so many games have less than a 33% completion rate by people who install them. I just recently bought and played through AC Syndicate for PS4. The trophy given for finishing the game was at 31.2%. That’s not even including people who bought the game and never even installed it.

In the past 4 years, I’ve been paying attention to the unmissable trophies given for playing through certain major milestones in the game and 32% seems to be very typical, where the trophy for finishing the first milestone might typically be at 90%.

@jsprunk: Yep. It's also one of the metrics designers use as "proof" that "story" in a campaign doesn't actually matter as much as consumers think it does.

Taken together with other factors, like the death of rental programs and the influence of Let's Plays and streamers (they all literally buy every major AAA game on release, in order to stay "relevant"), people are only playing games for as long as they hold their attention until the next big thing comes out... if they even get around to their purchases at all.
