Mass Effect: Andromeda Won't Have Any More Single-Player Updates Or DLC

Mass Effect: Andromeda's campaign will see no future changes.

222 Comments

Mass Effect: Andromeda developer BioWare has issued an update on the game, saying there are "no planned future patches for single-player or in-game story content." The statement effectively confirms the studio will not make any more technical changes to the way the campaign runs. Additionally, it will not release any DLC to address some of the loose narrative threads that fans were hoping to see resolved.

Most notable among these unresolved plot points is the fate of the Quarian Ark, which BioWare has said will be explored in comics and novels, along with other stories set in the Andromeda galaxy.

Now Playing: All the Glitches and Bugs We've Seen So Far - Mass Effect: Andromeda

"Early in development, we decided to focus Mass Effect: Andromeda’s story on the Pathfinder, the exploration of the Andromeda galaxy, and the conflict with the Archon," reads a statement on the game's official website.

"The game was designed to further expand on the Pathfinder’s journey through this new galaxy with story-based APEX multiplayer missions and we will continue to tell stories in the Andromeda Galaxy through our upcoming comics and novels, including the fate of the Quarian Ark."

Mass Effect: Andromeda had a rocky launch, with a litany of bugs and graphics issues drawing heavy criticism from its players. In the months following, BioWare released patches to remedy many of these, the latest of which was on August 1. This, BioWare said, will be the last update for the campaign.

Looking ahead, BioWare's said its "multiplayer team will provide details of their ongoing support and upcoming content, including new multiplayer missions, character kits, and what’s in store for N7 Day" in the coming weeks.

EA officially confirmed that Andromeda developer BioWare Montreal merged with Motive Studios, another EA developer based on Montreal.

Sorry this is a good thing, the game tarnished the Mass Effect brand. Wasting further resources on dlc or a sequel would only further taint it. BioWare used to be known for it's high quality masterpieces and epic story telling, Andromeda didn't come even anywhere close to matching those standards. Clearly most the real talent has left BioWare.

@omnichris: This wasn't the real Bioware talent, this was a Montreal studio that had only made DLC before. http://kotaku.com/the-story-behind-mass-effect-andromedas-troubled-five-1795886428

@ElDelBarrio:

It can get back up on it's feet but what they need to do is first fully remaster the first 3 Mass Effect games on PS4, Xbone and PC. It will refresh peoples minds on how good the franchise was and then they will be extra hyped for a Mass Effect 4. :D Yes, Release a Mass Effect 4, make the red ending of ME3 the canon ending and bring back Shepard. Hell yes. But before they do any of that of course they need to sort out the staff in BioWare, get rid of those vile SJWs and hire some real raw talent devs, and better writers.

@omnichris: I really hope that you are right.

I love ME. And would wellcome any attempts to make andromeda what it could be.

But it has to be able to stand on its own.

The old ME. Is almost perfect and should not be used other then for lore/story.

If you remastered the old one, no one would play andromeda.

But to be honest with you, it looks like this franchise has the EA virus and it looks terminal?

That's the thing with gaming (and most companies in general really) - if something goes wrong (like Andromeda) or doesn't sell well, rather than make any attempt to fix it or rectify it in any way, they just abandon it. Same thing happened to the Dead Space series; 3 was poorly received (an OK game, but went too far away from the Dead Space formula) so instead of fixing it and letting the devs make the next game the way they wanted to, EA just kills it. A hugely popular and interesting franchise - gone.

Andromeda wasn't the best game, but I put a good 70 hours into it, and it did get better the longer I played (I almost gave up a few hours in), so with a bit of improvement and some good quality DLC, fans would have stuck around, giving the devs a chance to learn from their mistakes and make the next game better. But no, it got bad reviews so EA kills it. Another game will take it's place, and when that gets rushed and botched, they'll kill that too.

@Decapod_10: I agree.

I believe they could've made some good DLC for the game and brought in some of the other alien races. Bioware's DLC usually adds some pretty good content to their games. It's a shame we won't see any single player DLC for the game. It's probably the one Bioware game that needs it the most.

Guess all the patches couldn't improve sales, and the few defenders of this game there was and gonna get dumped on, but they will keep trying to farm money from the multiplayer pile of excrement.

I can't say this bugs me a lot on the surface, I really don't get into the DLC add-ons as they really do just feel like a poorly connected epilogue to the released game. That being said, the ramifications is that EA management has heard the cries and likely will not fund/authorize any thing else for this universe.

Personally, there are things about the game that are annoying (the menu system sucks... how does a menu system blow? Why?) and clearly a lot of polish issues. Regardless, its been enjoyable entertainment, sort of the equivalent of the Expendables... enjoyable but not something I'll be talking about 10 years from now. I think a lot of the criticism has been borderline group think or mob mentality... and the sad thing is that probably killed this franchise more than the quality issues in the game itself.

Honestly cannot believe EA just allowed this franchise to die the way it jas. 1 and 2 were great 3 was good. Was it the studio who made those games wanted to leave it alone and AS just wanted to cash in. Shame because the new one is ok it just could of been epic

Its like a big thank you from bioware to all of us who supported them and pre-ordered the game just because we fucking loved the prequels... I've finished the first 3 games in series at least 8 times (can't remember the times I finished them as stand alone games) haven't finished andromeda yet, what a waste

How about a sequel instead of just resolving everything in comics and novels most people won't read or buy? Personally, I thought the game was great. A multi-tiered story? From Bioware post-EA acquisition? I thought it was a (very much needed) throwback.

Tier 1 - new galaxy to explore with new enemy killing everyone

Tier 2 - new enemy is out there in rest of galaxy, came here, have factions infighting, how big is the race, etc.

Tier 3 - who actually bankrolled the whole expedition, who is the benefactor, how did garson really die, who did it, etc?

Lots of loose story lines that need a deep and equally compelling sequel. Not just some resolution in some name brand literature. Fortunately, I feel fairly confident a sequel is on the way.

This is fine with me. I don't see the problem. I honestly think patches and DLC are the devil. I miss the old days where once a game was out, that was it. It had to have the least amount of bugs possible and if you wanted extra story or quests, you waited/hoped for a sequel. The way I look at it is, if it's not good enough to make it into the main game, either dump it or put it in the next one. Yeah, I know... unpopular opinion. I really don't care. Say what you want. I'll never see your comment.

@frosty988: Fair enough.

However there is some DLC which really did add something special to some vanilla games: Shivering Isles was a prime example.

Truly unbelievable. Despite the hate they still have a LOT of loyal fans who were waiting for a DLC to help with more narrative. How could they just abandon these fans?! Shocking, honestly.

@bfcochran16: Its EA. All they ever care about is the $$$.

Funny how about a year ago they had this whole board of directors meeting to discuss why they were listed as the worst company in america yet it looks like they're on the right track again this year for that award.

@jako998: They wrapped up Dead Space fairly well though, and it was obvious they were going in a direction nobody wanted. Everyone agreed it was better to end the franchise on a high-ish note, so nobody feels too choked up about that one.

Kinda hard to do anything with a turd. That being said; the fact that they're basically ditching the game (and most likely the franchise) speaks volumes. But this is EA and we all know (or should know by now) how they treat their franchises, so this should come as no surprise.

But have no fear; the hype machine will be out in force for Anthem assuring us that it will be the next great sci-fi video game franchise... after basically taking one of best sci-fi video game franchises behind the shed and shoot it in the back of the head.

@daleksec1977: @cavindar Anthem is being made by the core Bioware team (inc. writer) that brought you Mass Effect franchise in the first place.

It's a hasty reaction to "boycott" that game for a ME game they were not a part of. ME:A was an interesting attempt of something different from another studio, but it didn't work out to EA's liking.

It happens in any industry (inc. sports).

This doesn't help or make the game better or anything, but I thought the novel tie-in was pretty good. I'll probably read the next ones that are coming out (glad they aren't cancelled after the negative reception the game got (and deserved)). The Mass Effect universe is still an interesting one, and since Bioware obviously no longer cares about it, I'll get my fix from the books.

@Brettsky128: How can you say Bioware doesn't care about the Mass Effect series just because the main team is working on a new IP and they decided to give a B team an opportunity to make a risky new entry in the series?

That makes no sense.
