Mass Effect 5 - Everything We Know About BioWare's RPG

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

BioWare is hard at work on two announced RPGs, one of which is a new Mass Effect game.

BioWare has announced that it is currently working on the next Mass Effect game (which we'll henceforth refer to as Mass Effect 5 until its official name is revealed). The upcoming RPG looks to feature a storyline that may act as a direct sequel to the plotlines in both Mass Effect 3 and Mass Effect: Andromeda. Presumably, Mass Effect 5 is the next game coming from BioWare though seeing as we know very little about Dragon Age Dreadwolf, but we don't know all that much about the next Mass Effect either. Below, we've compiled that which we do know.

Release date

BioWare hasn't yet announced a release date for Mass Effect 5. In February 2022, BioWare GM Gary McKay said Mass Effect 5 is now in the prototyping phase, with developers experimenting with "ideas and experiences" for what the game will be, implying the game is coming but still not close to being finished. This sentiment was echoed in April 2022, with BioWare posting a blog post stating Mass Effect 5 is still in "early" development. In November 2022, for N7 Day, BioWare posted new concept art for Mass Effect 5, as well as a message that the game is still in pre-production and that this stage of development is "proceeding very well."

Now Playing: Mass Effect | N7 Day 2023 Teaser Trailer

For N7 day in 2023, BioWare showed a short and cryptic teaser of the next Mass Effect, which leads us to think the game still isn't in a state quite ready to be showcased yet. According to a report by Giant Bomb's Jeff Grubb, Mass Effect 5 will have a similar development timeline to Dreadwolf, which would mean we may not get the next Mass Effect until 2028 or 2029. If you're hoping to play a new Mass Effect in 2024, you may want to temper your expectations.

What we know

We know very little about Mass Effect 5--most of our knowledge comes from the game's announcement trailer. The trailer showcases two different galaxies, promoting the theory that Mass Effect 5 may be a sequel to both Mass Effect 3 and Mass Effect: Andromeda, telling a story that spans the two separate galaxies.

At the very least, the game looks to be a proper sequel to Mass Effect 3, as you can see dead Reapers and an older Liara T'Soni in the trailer. Liara is 109 in Mass Effect 3 and her species, the asari, can live close to 1000 years, so Mass Effect 5 could take place up to 900 years after the events of the original trilogy.

BioWare producer Brenon Holmes has confirmed that Mass Effect 5 will also utilize Unreal Engine via a job posting, asking for programmers with Unreal Engine 4 and Unreal Engine 5 experience to work on the new Mass Effect.

Deus Ex and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy writer Mary DeMarle has joined BioWare as the senior narrative director for Mass Effect 5 as well.

Platforms

The launch platforms for this new Mass Effect haven't been revealed yet, though we're assuming it will be released for the current generation of consoles, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, as well as PC since it appears to still be a few years out. We doubt it will be released for Switch or Microsoft and Sony's past generation hardware (Xbox One and PS4), but nothing has been officially ruled out.

PC system specs

Again, this game hasn't been confirmed for any hardware yet, and that includes PC. We don't yet know what this Mass Effect's minimum and recommended PC specs will be, nor whether the game will even be released for PC. Like, it's 99% likely that it will be, but there's no way to know for sure until BioWare or EA confirms as much.

Trailers

So far, we have one trailer for the new Mass Effect--its announcement cinematic trailer.

Multiplayer details

BioWare has not shared whether the new Mass Effect will have multiplayer. Hopefully, it does, as Mass Effect 3 and Mass Effect: Andromeda featured a very fun online Horde mode multiplayer that emphasized teamwork and strategy.

DLC/Microtransaction details

There's no word from BioWare or publisher EA on whether the new Mass Effect will support DLC or microtransactions. Both Mass Effect 3 and Mass Effect: Andromeda featured microtransactions in their respective multiplayer modes, and the original trilogy featured paid DLC expansions that added additional squadmates, story-driven side quests, and extra weapons and armor. To this day, both Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 have some of the best post-launch DLCs of any RPG in their Lair of the Shadow Broker and Citadel expansions, so we wouldn't mind paying for DLC for Mass Effect 5 if BioWare manages to achieve that caliber of storytelling again.

Preorder details

Mass Effect 5 is not yet available for preorder.

All the good devs are gone at Bioware pretty much I don't know how anybody can be hyped after Andromeda.

@Fia1: Nah... The ending just make all the ugliness before it to look not so bad... but once you start to pay attention you can see that this game destroys ME1 and ME 2 in just 5 minutes.

@blindbsnake: Mass Effect 3 was so much better than Andromeda that comparing the two is like comparing a t-bone steak to dog food.

You are entitled to your own opinion, but your opinion is wrong.

@gun_blade25: "Mass Effect 3 was so much better than Andromeda"

Really? So, you are saying that a game that lives in his own logic (even if that logic can be questioned), that tries to go away as far as possible of ME3 stupidity, is worse than a game that destroy two masterpieces plots? Please allow me to disagree...

I love the comparison between "t-bone steak to dog food",but the funny part is that you clearly don't know the difference, which happens a lot to people who use to consume "dog food"...

Never forget, you are defending a game that could have ended in the first 5 minutes... all it was needed was the reapers to do what ME1 said it was their main strategy... If you dont know what I´m talking about my advice is play ME1 again.

"You are entitled to your own opinion, but your opinion is wrong."

I may be... do you think you can show me why? Because I can easily start destroying ME3 and I not even need to go to the ending of the game...

@blindbsnake: Don’t want to get into the weeds with this, but in short.

The characters in ME3 were intelligently written and the way their arcs wrapped up was mostly amazing. The citadel dlc was particularly well put together.

The ending was weak, but it wasn’t Game of Thrones bad. They fixed a lot with the extended cut.

Conversely, Andromeda had terrible writing and a terrible plot. Each world was utterly uninteresting and the quests were mostly throw away fetch quests.

Couple that with flat characters who make idiotic choices, bad graphics (every non NPC Asari has the same face for example) and mediocre gameplay and you have a recipe for mediocrity.

Finally, I don’t know what plan you are referring too that would have allowed the Reapers to win and I played a few months ago. The reapers were stuck in dark space and with Sovereign unable to open the Citadel Mass Relay I’m not sure how they could have done anything differently but maybe I missed something.

@gun_blade25: "The characters in ME3 were intelligently written..."

Are you talking about the generals accepting defeat in advance and believing without questioning in a magical weapon or Shepard not questioning the flawed logic of the glowing kid?

I can give you that some characters have a good arc, and that Tuchanka and Rannoch are very good narrative stories and places to dive in. But ME3 ended in those two well written sequences, there is nothing more to brag about. And in a ME game, I would say is very little.

"The citadel dlc was particularly well put together."

A party in the middle of war when everyone is being juiced by the reapers... I dont know, maybe your Shepard could live with that, mine (the one from ME1 and ME2) would be ashamed...

"The ending was weak, but it wasn’t Game of Thrones bad."

Actually to Game of Thrones to be as bad as ME 3, the Ice king should allow John to choose three colors. Let me think:

1. Red. You kill all army of the dead, all the white walkers and all the wildlings... but you are warned that the army of the dead will return...

2. Blue. You take the place of the Ice King... And the world will fear you forever...

3. Green. You make everyone become half dead against their consent but everything is good and fine...

Yup... This way GOT ending would be as bad as ME3 ending... And lets face it, GOT ending is already a disaster...

"They fixed a lot with the extended cut."

LOL... No they dont... Its the same thing, with a few additions (which results in a more crazy stuff) and a middle finger to ME1 and ME 2 fans...

"Conversely, Andromeda had"

Andromeda is a bad game, that ruins only itself, and by doing so is already better than a game that destroys ME1 and ME2...

"I don’t know what plan you are referring too that would have allowed the Reapers to win"

Ok... I´ll make it simple otherwise this would be a long post. Let's forget that Sovereign risk everything (exposing reapers existence) because, as you said it yourself, reapers were stuck in dark space, and that open the Citadel Mass Relay would be their way in...But let's face it, Sovereign is moron, all he had to do is to wait less than three years for the reapers to show up... not a long time considering the amount of time they waited...

But let me resume the reapers win in 5 minutes: They arrive, they all go after the citadel, they take control of it easily, they control the relays, they won... Thats their strategy since ME1, but they only remember that in the end of ME3...

Like I normally say, the more you think about ME3 the more stupid everything becomes... sadly, I was one of the dumbest people who though that they knew how to write a story, and I didnt payed attention to the fact that Me1 and ME2 writers left after ME2...

@blindbsnake: jeez, this can't end well, but I'll try. At least you observed how utterly kick-ass the storytelling was in the Quarian and Krogan arcs, though you forgot to mention Tali's fate if you fail to keep the Quarians and Gethsemane from killing each other, and your success at brokering the first AI-organic peace treaty, and redemption for both civilizations, if you do.

The citadel was the Reapers' only way back here (that was ever explained). They historically had used the nearest relay and attacked the other systems, one by one. With the Protheans, the single example we have to go on, this took centuries, not 5 minutes. Javik made it clear that with a unified front of diverse cultures instead if his people's fascistic forced mono-culture, the Council and its allies were putting up a better fight than the Protheans. I'm sorry, but your five-minute argument doesn't make any sense. It did always bug me that, with the Citadel option closes and their backup plan (Arrival) literally collided with an asteroid, it was never explained HOW they got hear.

It's been a while, but I believe Karpyshian (forgive the shite spelling) left DURING production of ME3, and that all 3 games had extensive story i put from the engineers as well.

Controversial opinion: if you ignore the unexplained wave/ray tech following your final choice, the ending is not nearly as bad as so many people say. Then again, I found the last 2 episodes of Game of Thrones to merely be a downer and not the end of civilization as we know it. Supremely disappointing, sure, but they didn't result in me tmsuddenly calling two people I'd praised as geniuses for 8 years "dumb and dumber."

You know what I do, when I want to enjoy a Star Wars or DC marathon? I skip the ones I don't like. I don't call Zack Snyder the destroyer of dreams

Edit: I really can spell. Eff you, autocorrect

@id0ntkn0w7:

"jeez, this can't end well"

We are talking about ME3... obviously it can't end well... :)

"you forgot to mention Tali's fate"

Actually no, when I'm talking about Tuchanka and Rannosh I´m talking about the different paths and consequences. Also, I truly liked those journeys because it was the only time my Shepard acted as ME1 and ME2 Shepard...

"The citadel was the Reapers..."

You are forgetting the basic thing about Reaper Strategy (ME1), the control of the citadel is the only thing yo need to control de relays. Once that control is on check they can harvest world over world without little to none resistance.

What they did in the end of ME3 could have been done in the beginning (which was the plan all along), but obviously if a combined army couldn't stop them, a divided one... well, you get what I mean...

You are basing your argumentation on reaper surprise attack, which is a different thing. Or it isnt? Because, we were still not prepared for their arrival... LOL

"I believe Karpyshian (forgive the shite spelling) left DURING production of ME3"

No, Drew left before the last ME2 dlc, "Arrival" (and that's obvious, the first crime they make your Shepard do). Same goes for Chris l'etoile. in other words, the people who made ME1 and ME2 great leave before ME3 and the morons (artists) took their place...

Lets not forget that the original ME3 plot would be "dark energy"... and not, "the reapers must win"...

"if you ignore the unexplained wave/ray tech following your final choice"

Ok... Let me explain why I say ME3 is a disaster of epic proportions. And please, I´not a hater by nature, I only hate one game and I´m almost 40, so you can see that I dont hate something lightly.

1 - It destroys ME1 plot in the first 5 minutes. The reapers arrive in less than 3 years (making Sovereign suicide mission stupid), and they never follow their own strategy to victory.

2 - Let me rephrase the main plot: To build a weapon that no one knows what it is, what it does, if works or even if the schematics are complete. A weapon that needs to acouplate in a structure that no one knows (I can´t even explain what this mean from a engineer point of view). And this weapon becomes your only strategy of war, because space magic is better than logic and good planning...

3 - The endings... My problem was never the space magic (which is clearly stupid too). My problem was the glowing kid´s logic. I can prove him wrong in ME1 and in ME2. But even more crazy, I can prove him wrong in ME3. Because "Rannosh" proves that peace can be achieved. But that's the problem when you have many writers and none goes in the same direction.

But the most painful thing in the ending is that the reapers won... You dont choose, the kid does that for you, he just allows you to choose one of his solutions. So in the end, it is his choice, not yours. You need to choose a crime, you need to become the villain in order to finish the game. That would be cool in some other game, but I didn't make Shepard a paragon to make him the bad guy in the end.

And I could go into each ending separately, showing how stupid each choice is. I could do the same for almost every statement the kid says...

PS: A simple example: The Levi are the first race to be changed into a reaper, the kid and its minions did it, but you saw the Levi and their power, so I ask you... what army did the glowing kid used? Dont think too much, it will hurt you, trust me...

I was a super fan of the serie, ME2 was my most loved game, I was so devoted to those morons that I even believed on the indoctrination theory (a fan theory made to make sense of all that stupid writing). So I studied ME3 to its core, I linked previous games, I ignore some major flaws... but then I hit the wall (the Extended Cut),I saw reality, and I stopped making excuses for them... And trust me, no one would be more happy than me if I were wrong, no one...I lost ME1 and ME2 because of that crappy game...

@blindbsnake: you have forgotten some important parts of the story. The "kid" didn't destroy the leviathan, as he is just a representation. The first Reapers, built by the Leviathan, killed those except the ones that went into hiding. I don't want to beat a dead horse, but the Reapers spent centuries wiping out the Protheans. That doesn't lend itself to the idea of "little resistance," especially since the Protheans knew they were coming. At the outset of ME3, most people still don't believe Shepard, so yeah, they were unprepared. There. I got through that without hurting my weak little brain :P

@id0ntkn0w7: Oh boy... I was going to be nice... I was replying statement by statement in a cool way, but then your last phrase... Ok, let's raise guns...

Catalyst: They become the first true reaper. They did not approve...

Shepard: I met your creators, they told what you did to them... They said you betray them, that you turned them into Harbinger.

So... First Reaper... And you also know the power of the Levi, I believe you already played the Leviathan dlc... So I ask again, what army was used to destroy such a powerful race.

"the Reapers spent centuries wiping out the Protheans. That doesn't lend itself to the idea of "little resistance,""

Sorry... I dont get it... Why are you talking about the protheans? I'm talking about this cycle. The reapers easily defeat everyone in the end of the game, so in the beginning, without any preparation it would be even easier for them to achieve victory...

"I got through that without hurting my weak little brain"

Yeah... But you also did not give a reply or a proper justification. And my question was more of a joke than a real question. I see you dont even bother to try to explain the crucible or questioning Sovereign suicide mission... I respect that...

You also dont touch the endings, which makes sense...

Damn, I saw the kid argumentation again to refresh my memory... it was as stupid as I remember...

"My solution dont work anymore..."

Why?

"Because you are here"...

LOLOLOL Sorry, now I can laugh about it... in 2012 I just wanted to cry...

@blindbsnake: at some point it is no longer fun to argue nerdy shit with someone who only pays attention to what they want. You are free to think what you want, and are of course entitled to your opinion of ME3. You do seem to have some difficulty paying attention, probably because you're fixating on other things. "My weak little brain" was a direct reply to your meager attempt to insult my intelligence. I admit, the irony of that slipping past you was enjoyable.

@id0ntkn0w7: "someone who only pays attention to what they want"

I pay attention to what I believe it is important. In ME3 I paid attention to all the bad stuff, because most of it are bad stuff.

"You do seem to have some difficulty paying attention..."

It always interesting to see statement like these from people who enjoys ME3...

""My weak little brain" was a direct reply to your meager attempt to insult my intelligence."

If that is what you understood from my statement: "Dont think too much, it will hurt you, trust me..." I want to make a stop and say I´m sorry, it was not my intention.

What I was trying to say is that the more you think in ME3 the more it will hurt your brain (yours and everyone else). Because ME3 has many illogical situations, crazy and stupid ideas, inconsistent narrative and very bad writing. You took it as an insult, and that was not my intent...

"I admit, the irony of that slipping past you was enjoyable."

Well, as explained I was replying in a cool way and I didn't understand your reply. Also English is not my mother language, so I know I will miss some things and write some stupid phrases. But I dont like Me3 and I know is a very stupid game filled with very bad writing... How did you put it? "the irony of that slipping past you was enjoyable"

"He thinks Andromeda is better than ME3?"

Probably the right interpretation is that I believe that Andromeda is not as bad as ME3... but I never played a game as bad as ME3 so, hard to even help in the understanding of the situation...

But you probably didn't get what I said...Andromeda is better because is not worse (which is impossible). That doesn't means that people should not like ME3... in the end is a matter of taste. And I´m not debating tastes, I was debating the narrative, the plot, and the bad writing.

Additionally, it probably takes place in the Milky Way, which is just fine with me.

That's definitely Liara in the trailer. You're right that we don't know for certain if she'll be in the game, but she is in this trailer, and it would be kind of pointless for BW to put her in it if she isn't in the game.

Almost every section begins with "Bioware hasn't announced", "haven't been revealed, "hasn't been confirmed", "there's no word" etc.

The only use this article has, is to show in how many ways can you say "we don't know crap aside from what was shown in the official trailer".

@lostn: is this flamebait? Are you trying to lure people into calling you bigoted towards a fictional monogendered race? If so, I can appreciate the effort.

Liara has distinct features, especially facial features. And that is clearly her smile. And that wouldn't be Aria's reaction to finding Shepard's breastplate. That's the reaction of someone's dear friend or, if you played it the way I (and clearly the person who worked up the trailer) did, someone's lovah.

how do people know it's Liara? To me, all the blue chicks look roughly the same.

Her facial markings are quite distinct. It's definitely her.

@illegal_peanut: Actually no... The key people who left did that in the end of ME2... Now, the people who left are just residual excrement...
