Marvel Universe Online officially offline

Microsoft Games Studios head Shane Kim confirms the ambitious Cryptic-developed 360-Vista massively multiplayer superhero game "has been discontinued."

In July 2006, Microsoft and Marvel Entertainment announced they were developing an ambitious project, Marvel Universe Online. The title was the first massively multiplayer online role-playing game designed for cross-play between Xbox 360 and Windows Vista, and the first MMORPG to feature characters from the Marvel Comics universe. As outlined in a GameSpot interview, Marvel Universe Online also marked the first collaboration between Marvel and developer Cryptic Studios after they settled a nasty legal flap over Marvel-esque characters in City of Heroes and City of Villains.

But following the high-profile announcements of 2006, the flow of information about Marvel Universe Online was shut off in 2007. Unconfirmed reports swirled that the project had been quietly canceled, even though official inquiries were greeted by Microsoft's standard refrain, "Microsoft does not comment on rumors or speculation." However, the wall of silence broke at last week's D.I.C.E. Summit, when Microsoft Game Studios head Shane Kim told GameSpot that Marvel Universe Online is permanently offline.

"Microsoft and Marvel have decided to discontinue that project," the executive told GameSpot. "It was a mutual decision." Kim did not go into further detail about the game's cancellation.

The demise of Marvel Universe Online leaves Sony Online Entertainment's even more mystery-shrouded DC Comics PC and PlayStation 3 project as the highest-profile officially sanctioned comic-book massively multiplayer game in development. (City of Heroes and City of Villains, which feature character-created superhero characters, remain online.) It also comes shortly after Marvel ended its agreement with Electronic Arts to codevelop a fighting game. The company still has longstanding agreements with Activision and Sega to develop non-MMOG games based on its iconic characters.

So let me get this right... they sue the crap out of Cryptic Studios and NCSoft because people might be able to make similar characters to existing ones in the Marvel Universe and the argument they used in court was that it would detract from sales of their upcoming MMO... wtf?? So does this mean Cryptic Studios and NCSoft can have the court decision reversed... lol.

Well, now we know what it is. Though I figured it was gonna be this, and not something else. Everything else major first party couldn't get canned. Just how it worked out.

That sucks! I'm not a big MMO player, but I would have played this one. Who doesn't love Marvel Comics? Almost everyone I know, that is into gaming, loves comics. C'mon, we know M$ has the $ to back this one, and it would be sure to sell. As long as it doesn't have a subscription fee attached.

I was so looking forward to this. I agree with the other posters saying the superhero stuff is more interesting then lord of the rings or dare I say WoW. Even though i prefer Marvel, I guess there's still the DC one to look forward to. Only thing that could make this better is if City of Heroes/Villains comes to a console. That would be awesome.

In my opinion it was quite over ambitious and could have caused them a lot of problems keeping it up and running. So maybe it's for the best that they cancelled it.

spasticus162 said: "Im guessing microsoft wanted this game to be playable without monthly charges and marvel got pi**ed." Are you nuts! MS wanted to charge for playing Halo 2 Vista online when PC standard for online shooters had been free to play for years. If anything, it was the other way around, but I doubt that was the cause at all.

everyone keeps saying its a crowded market(mmorpg) On pc i agree. But me and many 360 owners were looking forward to this. Im guessing microsoft wanted this game to be playable without monthly charges and marvel got pi**ed. I know the monthly charges put me off final fantasy xi and if i dont like it i cant trade it in. tis a damn shame. superheroes are way cooler than all this lord of the rings sh*t.

rkgambill XBL is great but its too constrictive for a lot of things, a lot of developers like the PSN better because its more open (UT3 mods anyone) and how sony is letting ppl buy full games like Warhawk, Tekken 5, and things like that

I really hope that Sony pulls off a great super-hero MMO. I was looking forward to both games. This must have been something out of MS's hands because they wouldn't let a cash whore out the window that easily.

I was interested in this game, but wasn't sure how it would be pulled off. But I'm sad to see another X-Box MMO get canned. That leaves us with the supposed exlusive (to the PC and 360) Square Enix non Final Fantasy MMO in developement (that is a mouthfull), Age of Conan, APB, and Huxley as the only MMO's still on track for the X-Box 360. Of those, I'm most interested in APB and Age of Conan. Since nothing is known about the Square Enix MMO, and the fact I wasn't a fan of FFXI, it is hard to get to excited about that one. And Huxley is more or less a FPS with MMO qualities, which is cool... but not exactly what I'm looking for. One of the reasons I'm getting a PS3 this summer is The Agency. And though APB may have some similar concepts behind it (only more cops and robbers online than secret agents), it is still so far away that very little has been seen of it. And it was stated that Age of Conan would release on PC first, then 360... that leaves The Agency as the only MMO (though in a non traditional sense) to be released any time soon (more than likely by the end of 2008). I'm a big fan of X-Box Live and will continue to support it typical multiplayer fare (such as Call of Duty, Rainbow Six and such), but I will be spending time on the Playstation Network once The Agency hits. If Microsoft was smart (a questionable description at times), they would put more effort in securing the console MMO space. That is one area Sony's online could end up dominating in a year or so.

I was also going to mention True Fantasy... why do they ,keep starting these projects if they're not going to finish them? MMO's only make sense on the 360 because of the excellent online service... so why is there such a lack of MMO gaming?

This is not the first time a Microsoft Game Studios MMORPG is cancelled for an Xbox platform. Anyone remember True Fantasy Live Online for the original Xbox?

Surely you wouldn't all be playing as Marvel Characters you'd get about 200 people online before people ended up being Sentinels. The Marvel characters would most likely have been NPCs in the familiar marvel universe, so the Hellfire Club, Westchester Mansion, Avergers Island (maybe) The baxter building/4 Freedoms Plaza etc. Anyway it's history now so you'll never know.

it was better when it was called City and Villains of Heroes. :) hahahah... besides, how many cyclops/wolverines would you have seen running around a city? :) that would of gotten lame after a while. WoW still rules.

Well if the Marvel MMO game was gonna suck, then likely the DC MMO game is gonna suck too. Makes you wonder why Marvel would sue COH/COV since they actually made a playable game where the goal is to try & create your own hero, not just emulate what is already in the comic books (which would be incredibly boring & uncreative).

This was the only non capcom Marvel project that I supported. Now Marvel games have no hope unless they give the license back to capcom. Same for Disney.
