Nintendo Europe today announced that it launched an update for Mario Kart 7 that kills off several shortcut exploits for the 3DS racing game. The update removes shortcuts Nintendo deems unfair on the Wuhu Island Loop, Wuhu Mountain Loop, and GBA Bowser Castle 1 courses.

Nintendo has removed a string of exploitable shortcuts from Mario Kart 7.

Gamers who elect not to install the update will remain able to take part in Mario Kart 7's single-player and multiplayer modes, but will not be able to play online. As of press time, Nintendo of America had not responded to GameSpot's inquiry regarding when the update will launch in North America.

Mario Kart 7 launched for the 3DS in December 2011, scored a strong critical reception, and sold 4.54 million copies. For more, check out GameSpot's review of Mario Kart 7.

I don't have this Mario Kart, but is the shortcut as bad as the Wii's Mushroom Gorge or Grumble Volcano? Looking at some comments below seems like it's accessible. How about a description so i don't have to look at montages with mediocre music choices.

@SomePlayaDude On Maka Wuhu, all that was required was to jump off the track past a small stone wall into water (located right before the cave part of the track). By doing this you would bypass more than half the track and anybody who choose not to cheat would have no chance of catching up to you basically.

Thank God. I get so damn tired of everyone voting to race on Maka Wuhu all the time just so they can cheat and get an easy win.

Good good. I just went and played a good 1 Hour long Mariokart 7 online session, and let me tell you, it feels GOOD to be able to win ligitly on Maka Wuhu without having to worry about cheaters.

The update is already launched in North America before 6 a.m. PST. I wonder whether there will be other updates for this game as I feel the current one will make online races more fair.

@megakick The "shortcuts" in the game is a result of a an unintended glitch, to the point where people would only choose certain tracks just to boost their score. It had to be taken out.

Wow nintendo is doing updates. This is good. I just wish they would have done that long ago for old mario kart DS. Love that game.

Don't have this version but how is it any more unfair then the shortcuts in previous games? Are the short cuts difficult to maneuver for a lot players?

@megakick Its not a shortcut. Its a glitch that allows you to bypass half of the entire Maka Wuhu race course.

Thank god Nintendo. Now I feel like playing again.

I believe in the Bill Belichick method of play, if you're not cheating, you're not trying :)

Just to let you know, the update has launched worldwide. I'm in Canada and I got a SpotPass notification about it and have downloaded the patch.
