Lost Planet: DirectX 10 vs. DirectX 9

Lost Planet marks gaming world’s first foray into DirectX 10. Check out how it compares to DirectX 9.

We've been waiting for the first DirectX 10-capable game to appear, anything really. Windows Vista has been available for almost half a year, and we've been wasting our GeForce 8800 GTX's precious GPU performance on pedestrian DirectX 9 games since last November. We initially expected Crysis or Company of Heroes, or maybe even Supreme Commander (which is no longer coming), to be the first game to introduce us to Windows Vista's DirectX 10 world, but patch delays and ever-moving release windows have let Lost Planet, a port of an Xbox 360 game, grab the spotlight.

Lost Planet originally came out for the Xbox 360 in January of 2007. The game takes place on an icy planet filled with monsters, pirates, big guns, and even bigger monsters. As Wayne the snow pirate, you make your way through snow-ravaged landscapes to avenge the death of your father. The stark, frigid world makes for a great backdrop to highlight the benefits of high dynamic range lighting. The white environment can reflect blinding sunlight, while fancy particle systems toss up tufts of snow and ice.

The game looks great in both DirectX 9 and 10, but we couldn't tell much of a difference between the two versions. Shadows looked slightly better in DirectX 10, but that's only because we could change the shadows setting to high, whereas in DirectX 9 we could only use the medium setting. After failing to see any major graphical differences between the two versions, we asked Capcom about what makes the DirectX 10 version special. A Capcom representative told us that the DirectX 10 improvements primarily enhanced performance by up to "10 to 20 percent" through the use of "geometry shaders, depth resolve, and stream output." That means that the Lost Planet demo is only using DirectX 10 to increase performance, not to produce advanced graphics effects.

We found that the DirectX 10 version of Lost Planet performed markedly slower when compared to the DirectX 9 version at the exact same settings. Additionally, the high-quality shadows we saw in DirectX 10 didn't seem to justify the performance hit. We did not perform an ATI versus Nvidia comparison because Capcom worked with Nvidia on the DirectX 10 development process and ATI didn't have the opportunity to tune its Radeon HD 2900 XT for the demo release.

The Lost Planet demo isn't a final version of the game, but the developers don't have much time to add in new effects before the game's June 26 release date. It looks like we can safely go back to waiting on Crysis or Company of Heroes for all those amazing DirectX 10 graphics.

Mouse over each DirectX 9 image to see the DirectX 10 comparison image.

Lost Planet DirectX 9 vs. DirectX 10

System Setup: Intel Core 2 X6800, EVGA nForce680i SLI, 2GB Corsair Dominator CM2X1024 Memory (1GB x 2), 160GB Seagate 7200.7 SATA Hard Disk Drive, Windows Vista Ultimate. Graphics Cards: Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB. Graphics Driver: Nvidia Forceware beta 158.43.

I downloaded the dx10 demo of this to try out on my 8800GTS, only to get an "Invalid display mode" error, seems it only supports widescreen monitors, BOO!

Hi All, They are trying to force the people just to buy VISTA, we so windows 2000 with DX8 but we can install DX9 to play DX9 games , so why No DX10 can be installed on WINDOWS XP, i think Microsoft want to push their new windows and force the people to buy new hardware or new PC. still NO DX10 games worth to waste your money on buying hardware + Vista :( . Also the people who bought 8800 GTX or GTS , most of them are happy with the performance of those cards not just DX10 , i have tried GTX & GTS 320 both cards are great in gaming.

There's a slight difference, but really not enough to make me go "omigosh i needs 2 buy new comp+vista!!" I'll have to wait for other games to come out.

Crysis will be the first true, killer-app to fully showcase DX10 in all of it's glory.

this wont show anything that direct x 10 does. its just running in a different mode. Show Crysis side by side and then you can see a HUGE HUGE HUGE difference. its so much more.

I've been playing through the DX10 demo of LP with a system similar to the one in the article. Although the res seems to max out in the demo at 1152 x 864 (ish), it runs smoothly throughout. I think the performance hit and the quality of DX10 are both being a little overhyped. LP with DX10 is very pretty, but it is a 1st gen DX10 game. Expecting it to rock your world might be a bit premature.

Notice those two bugs crawling through snow. On dx10 the motion blur of every being part is very antural. Thats one step closer to reality! Niiiiceee!

I really cannot see that Direct X10 has any significant improvement over Direct X9 . Unless there is a dramatic change they should leave the BS inhouse till they come up with something terriffic!!

I only get about 8fps less on the Snow benchmark on my DX10 set up, which is exactly the same as GameSpot's with the exception that I use an 8800 GTS instead of a GTX. Not bad. The game itself is rock solid and plays without any drops in framerate, though. As it is a third person game, it doesn't need to run at a stable 75fps for good visuals.

There's a difference between a game built from the ground up with dx 10 in mind versus a game like lost planet that tries to convert to dx 10, which is why there's hardly any difference in quality. Also, it's just a demo so maybe it isn't fully optimized yet. Also, hardware and drivers are fairly new. When Doom 3 and Far Cry came out it ran fairly slow but with improvements in drivers both games ran much better on the same hardware. You won't see a major difference until the next generation of games for the PC comes out,and built specifically for the PC and not some console port. Which is a good thing since we can now have amazing games written first for the PC which can then be dumbed down and visually degraded for consoles instead of the reverse of having hack job ports that go from consoles to the PC like Splinter Cell Double Agent and NFS Carbon that are full of bugs.

DX10 is a big letdown at least with this game....until I see something actually improve in looks and in performance. I think I'l stick to Win XP and DX9 much longer.

spikedwraith, there's a video on gametrailers.com which shows the difference between crysis running on dx9 vs dx10. There's a major difference with added special effects ranging from light rays through trees, extra smoke and fire, and more environmental effects.

DX10 is useless in this game, that's for sure, the DX9 have almost always 10 FPS more and the only chage was a bit more snow... so useless!

This game was made just for 9 and was updated for 10... not much of a difference because it was a DX9 game on the drawing board. Cant wait until Crysis! The future looks awesome!

The differences are very small. the lighting seems a bit better in DX10 and the particle systems are more realistic... but it's not what you call a spectacular evolution.

DX10 is just MS way of pushing Vista. No body ever made a big deal before about how 9 was better then 8 or how 8 is better then 7 etc. It was just a newer version and we happily installed it because it was freely available for all win OS until 10 came along.

I think that directx 9 still can be pushed further, many games are already looking amazing. Until a game comes out designed straight for Dx10, we are not going to see spectacular jaw dropping changes that will make Dx9 look dated. Actually, from seeing LPEC for Xbox back then.... I thought this game was for PC too. Now its coming out in June, Im looking forward for it. Yeah!

I seriously don't see a huge improvement....magazines where praising it and all i see: if u have a good graphics card u can do anything despite the direct x (10 or 9) u have. I expected more...:(
