Kinect sells 2.5 million in 25 days

Microsoft says its motion-sensing system is on track to hit 5 million units sold by year's end.

Hot on the heels of Nintendo's announcement that it had sold 1.5 million units of hardware over the Black Friday/Thanksgiving weekend, Microsoft has struck back with some sales numbers of its own. Today, the software giant said that its Kinect motion-sensing system has sold 2.5 million units worldwide in its first 25 days on the market. The peripheral's milestone comes in the wake of a reported $500 million marketing campaign to promote the device.

2.5 million Kinects have been sold in under a month.
2.5 million Kinects have been sold in under a month.

Microsoft said the Kinect was on track to sell 5 million by year's end, in line with the company's previously announced target. The system went on sale in North America on November 4, with its European rollout occurring November 10 and its Japanese release following on November 20.

Currently, the Kinect system is offered as a stand-alone unit for $150, a hefty premium over the device's $56 estimated cost in parts. Two bundles are also available: a $300 4GB Xbox 360 package and a $400 250GB Xbox 360 loadout. All bundles also include Kinect Adventures, just one of the 17 games that were released in November.

There was an article in yahoo that talked about the failed gadgets of the NES/SNES/GENESIS. Sega activator which = Kinect (was a failure) Power glove technology is basically the Wii and other NES tech. Move copied the Wii has some eye toy but design is of the Wii controller / All these new technologies were planned ideas of the past and made successful in the present- Sony fanboys admit your phrase (Wii copied the eye toy)

Really nice. I thought this woudn't sell at all after the press conference. Still, I dislike it a lot. I prefer the move by an inch. Still, it has it's charms. But the move has precision and hardcore gamers in mind too while kinect doesnt. Still, the playstation move can integrate most the of kineck tech without hardware change, so I'm hoping for that instead of buying both. I'll wait anyway till next summer before buying one, to see if it's worth it.

Kinect sells 2.5 million in 25 days once again proving that Microsoft is amazing when it comes to business and technology, but also that people are morons.

@finnstah @blackace Actually, Sony SHIPPED 4.1 million, not SOLD 4.1 million. A statement they had to clear up, so, you now, they don't mislead their shareholders and get prosecuted for fraud. Read this article: << LINK REMOVED >> ************************************************************* I know they shipped, and not sold. I don't remember saying they sold 4.1 million. ============================================ @alexweile If move is an upgrade of Wii. Then Kinect is just an upgrade from the Eyetoy PS2.. nothing special about it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- I don't think Move is an upgrade in terms of device. In terms of game graphics yes, but in terms of functionality, it's pretty much a Wii with a different controller. Whereas the Kinect is a huge jump over what the EyeToy was. Kinect has 3 cameras, voice & face recognition and can recognize you just by your body. It also can scan object and put them in a game. EyeToy wasn't capable of those things.

@Trevon05 I doubt it, although it probably would have lowered the gap. You can't really prove either way so their's no sense arguing about something your guessing at.

so the Wii sold 1.5 million in a weekend.. and it's been out for like 4 years now. and Kinect only sold 1 million more in a month and it's been out for like a month? I think. I'm not a Nintendo fanboy cause I have a 360. I just don't like the idea of Kinect too much. I get tired from work and when I play video games at home, I'd rather use a controller and not dance around :P I really wish they would focus more on their regular stuff. Wii needs to come out with some better games again. Sony needs to stop copying off of Nintendo and failing at it. get rid of Kevin Butler too, he's stupid as hell. and Microsoft needs to stop getting so expensive and worry a little less about Kinect. I'm gonna be pissed if video games require you to dance all of the time.

wow. This just goes to show that you don't have to be on the Wii too bandwagon, ala ps3hdwii, to move hardware. Microsoft went for something really innovative and not HDWii v1.5 like Sony did.

all three motion based peripherals are at the mercy of developers, if they produce decent titles it may catch on but at the moment all I see is hyped up rubbish.

@SoohooSan Dunno official numbers but logic would dictate that what with the age of the 360 and decline of the wii and the fact that Asia seems to thoroughly dislike the 360 I'd say the ps3 has probably done best this year, it was inevitable really considering how popular Sony is in Europe and Asia compared to the 360. The Kinect does indeed have lots of potential I guess we will just have to wait and see what happens when the games come... I'm really looking forward to Project Draco, and hope that they start to include face and voice recognition in some of the bigger titles to come

@Johny_47 I didnt say anything against the move, that at least has the POTENTIAL to satisfy a hardcore gamer (ie: someone who wants to do something other than duck and sidestep out of the way of objects). There are games coming with move functionality that are definitely proper games. killzone 3 for example. kinect is going to struggle to come up with titles like that. theres only so much it can do.

@DCUltrapro If you say the Kinect truly has potential. I know I will be sold into this idea. It really does have so much things they can do. I tried a couple of their games and its really fun. I honestly like all three company but my fav is nintendo. It'll be up to the 3rd party developer to see whether they can make great games for the Kinect but totally agree what your saying. In my opinion, their games seems to be so great playing with friends like Kinect Sports and Kinect adventures. I am truly looking forward to see how 3rd party developer interact with hardcore gaming. Its going to be a great challenge to get the hardcore gamers but like you said, it does have great potential with Star Wars, Steel Batallion, etc. Hell I could forget I'm moving in front of the camera while playing kinect. Its going to be a very interesting big three race. Random question though. Out of the big 3, who has the most successful year in 2010?

I have no faith in an industry where a crappy, casual gimmick like this sells so much, even costing so much. Idiots will buy anything nowadays.

@IceJester45 I completely agree. I have a Move and Sports Champions is great, but it definitely falls into the "time waster" category- not exactly a deep gameplay experience. I could see both platforms having some seriously spectacular games in the future; it's just going to take some time. You're totally on point with more Move-specific games being needed.

@zzamaro Not a single one of the games you mentioned was specifically designed for motion control. A revolutionary motion-controlled game will never be one that most people will use regular controllers for- I'm talking about a game that truly utilizes motion controls in a way that is fresh, well thought out and makes motion control NECESSARY as opposed to "optional" (RE:5 is cool with motion controls, but if you played the Versus mode with them you'd get stomped right quick- don't even get me started on MAG; motion control in that game is like dropping into a real war on crutches)

That is completely inflammatory. How much did Black Ops cost to make, or the Playstation Move? Why aren't we told how much companies are banking on every piece of hardware and software they sell. How does that even matter? Would the fact that a company is making 300% profit or whatever the number may be deter you from buying a game or peripheral you wanted? Does it say anything about the quality or functionality of the hardware? No. This bit of information is added in to create a negative reaction, and that is not being objectively informative, not in the least.

@BlisteredThumbs 4.1 million vs 2.5 million...hmm, now who's the ones in denile? ****************************************************************************** 4.1 million in 60 days, 2.5 million in 25 days. Now who is in denial. Kinect will have over 5 million in the same time period the Move has been out. Good try fanboy.

@fabyo123 Correction. They only SHIPPED that much. Plus, from my understanding, they don't count the bundles. They count both the stick and the nunchuck (or whatever Sony calls it) separately. Again, this is just what I've heard so I'm not 100% sure on the matter.

@Trevon05 also I'm sure the games caught their eyes, there are many factors to consider. And wii controls have better qualities as well(i think their better). also Move and Kinect are not selling "that" good, decent but not good. If they were 'better" to everyone I think people would be buying them like a new console.
