Japanese publishers cancel, delay games after quake

Online play temporarily halted for Metal Gear Online, Final Fantasy XI and XIV; Japanese debut of MotorStorm 3, Yakuza: Of the End bumped; Disaster Report 4 canned.

Many game publishers have opted to err on the side of caution following the 8.9-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami that caused massive destruction in Northern Japan last week. With that portion of the country reeling from devastation, game makers that include Square Enix, Konami, Sony, Sega, Capcom, and Irem have announced game cancellations, delays, or service outages inside and outside of Japan.

Final Fantasy XIV players will receive a free month of play.
Final Fantasy XIV players will receive a free month of play.

As the earthquake has impacted Japan's energy production, Square Enix said that beginning yesterday, it has taken its massively multiplayer online role-playing games Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy XIV, as well as PlayOnline, offline for at least a week. The publisher apologized for the service disruption on its official forums and said that subscribers to these services would not be billed for the month of April.

Konami announced a similar move for Metal Gear Online. Through its Facebook page, the publisher said that MGS Online was being shut down until further notice so as to conserve energy in Japan. The publisher said that gamers can keep abreast of when the game will be brought back online through its official website.

As for game updates for Japan alone, Andria Sang reports that Irem outright canceled Disaster Report 4, which was due for release on the PlayStation 3 this spring. Though the developer reportedly offered no explanation for the cancellation, it likely stemmed from the game's premise, which was to escape a city that had been wrecked by an earthquake.

Game delays were more prevalent. Andria Sang also reported that Sony has pushed back MotorStorm: Apocalypse in Japan, a game that had been set for release in the region on March 17. Whereas previous installments in the series presented eye-catching natural environments, MotorStorm: Apocalypse is set in an earthquake-ravaged metropolis inspired by the US Pacific coast, specifically the San Francisco Bay Area.

Furthermore, the Japan-centric gaming site reported that Sega has delayed the release of Yakuza: Of the End, which had been slated to arrive in Japan later this week. The game also presented a departure for the series, with this installment in the underground crime drama franchise focusing on a town that has been ravaged by zombies.

Capcom also said that it has delayed the release of downloadable content for Marvel vs. Capcom 3 in Japan. Previously slated for release this week, the add-on would have introduced Resident Evil's Jill Valentine as well as Shuma-Gorath into the cross-over fighter.

Just read that reactor 4 had an explotion and a fire. Things are slowly inchin towards another chernobyl. Im not the religius type. But if there was ever a time to use "god help them" this is it. And a radioactiv cloud will hit the city in about 10 houers. =( So i understand that thay cansel/delay thos games. There is more important things to do like help peopel in Japan. I mean a whole city with 10.000 peopel in it are just gone.

@mosamania Nah they are just all the Islam states seeing that they don't like being ruled by dictators. Japan was just a case of bad luck. You build your house out of wood to be earthquake proof but it means if water ploughs through it - it hasn't a chance.

I knew the delays and cancellations would happen sooner or later, I thought there would be more cancellations though, seeing some of the footage makes you think that everything in Japan is wiped out. Thankfully that's not the case. This whole situation is horrible, there are high levels of radiation already, and if one of those nuclear reactors has a meltdown it would be a worse disaster than Chernobyl. The only thing we can do now is pray that Japan dosen't turn into a wasteland from the worst nuclear disaster in our time.

I was shocked when I've heard about this disaster... Just think about it - thousands of people died, much more lost all their posessions and houses... Just don't give up, people! We are with you! You are strong people, and I believe that you'll rise up, just as you did after WW II. And some day we all will be enjoing your awesome games, anime and manga again!

Prayers for Japan. Publishers goes offline due to Nuclear power plant disaster. Causing disruption problem. Many homes are without electricity and it is still winter there. I personally don't mind and happy system goes offline if it means to distribute power to where its mostly demanded for rescue operations. Japan will always come out stronger, they have many times and they will again. In the meantime you have the sympathy of all gamers. Happy gaming :)

I'm glad to see that with the odd inevitable exception, the comments here have been sensible and conveying everyone's sympathy for what has befallen Japan, to which I add my own in the strongest possible terms. I fear that when it comes to the online shutdowns it'll be some time before everything is sorted out, given the very serious disruption to the country's power grid- and let's be honest, getting FFXIV servers back up will be pretty low on their list of priorities. On another note, the cancellations of games featuring earthquake-related content is interesting. I won't criticise those decisions, but I wonder if other media such as films or novels would follow suit, or if this is still the games industry regarding itself as somehow creatively inferior. Someday, the stories of this disaster will be told in film and in print, and this once again opens up the question of whether interactivity automatically puts the subject out-of-bounds.

@Chargrilled I believe it doesn't really matter if it was 8.9 or a full 9, either way it's a tragedy that should affect us all independedly of living there or not and if you still have the guts to actually mock them in this time of need, you sir are a self-centered heartless fiend with no love for others, I hope you never have to go through what they are going through right now

So I keep checking the posts for this story. I was pretty upset when i saw a few heartless individuals commenting here. I have to say though, having given it a few hours and checked again, it looks like 95% of us gamers are good people who care for others in this terrible situation. That small 5% is being pushed out by the rest of us. As much as we all love to have our fanboy wars in here it is good to see honest statements of love, understanding, and hope going out to those affected by this natural devastation in Japan. Absolutely no country should ever have to deal with something of this magnitude. I know the world will pitch in and get things taken care of as quickly as we can. Being an American, I know the people in my country are at their best when disaster strikes. The money will come pouring in as it always does from the general population and hopefully our government wont be stupid about it and they will give generously as well. I have a feeling that along with the money there will be a huge number of volunteers ready to head over and help with any work that needs to be done as soon as Japan is able to get people in. Keep up the possitive comments and don't let the heartless ones get to you. We are all with the Japanese in this terrible time.

japan want it recognised as being a magnitude 9.0, noone else agrees and its largely recognised as 8.9. as for game delays. predictable. as for final fantasy online games. thats what you get for having all your servers in one country. learn and have them spread globally. helps with pings for one thing. i suspect this is going to delay more stuff aswell.

I pray for all the families and friends that were affected by this tragic moment. I hope everything will be okay. All developers should shut down their company temporary until everything is resolved in Japan. We don't leave people behind, they always come first in my mind. Video games can be replaced. A lost life can't. Do whatever it takes to rescue those who are affected.

So, people are in serious trouble and there are actually still people complaining that some MMO's are going down? Honestly? do you people have no hearts? if anything you should be taking out your subscription money and donating it to the Earthquake Relief, as well as the 3DS, do some people actually care more about a console clearly marketed at children than the lives of everyone who created them? Pathetic, get your priorities right. My prayers go out to the Japanese, as well as the people who have shown utter disregard and ignorance to the situation in Japan, because they are clearly in as much mental turmoil as the people in Japan are in physically.

to the people bleeting on bout games, Japan has much much much bigger things to worry about than pleasing you lot.Theres enough games on the market to play right now. First things first Japan needs to get back on its feet in about every sense, especially right now as were facign a meltdown which could cripple the country even more. tbh my heart goes out to everyone in japan already donated a tenner to the tsunami appeal at work.
