Here's When Gears of War Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Codes Start Going Out

Everyone who bought Gears of War Ultimate Edition on Xbox One will soon receive codes to download the promised backwards-compatible versions of every game in the series for Xbox 360.

Starting December 1, Microsoft will send out download codes for Gears of War, Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3, and Gears of War Judgment, according to a tweet from the game's account. These games will be playable on Xbox One through backwards compatibility, which arrives on November 12 as part of the New Xbox One Experience.

It's not too late to score the free games, either. Everyone who buys the Gears of War Ultimate Edition before December 31 gets them. The codes will sent out in waves, so don't worry if you don't get yours right away.

If you already own digital copies of the Xbox 360 Gears of War games, they will be added to your Xbox One library of backwards-compatible titles. Players who own physical copies can put the disc into the Xbox One and install it from there. After that, they'll need to put the disc in the drive every time they want to play.

"All game modes, including multiplayer, will work just as they do on Xbox 360," Microsoft said in an FAQ. "Additionally, you can play with people who are either playing Gears of War via backwards compatibility on Xbox One, or on Xbox 360."

What a dumb deal so you buy ultimate edition and you get the same games at a lower resolution for free when there are tons of other games they could have given for free, microsoft deals are the worst.

@yukushi: What has $ON¥ done "for the gamers" lately? Charge them to stream the PS3 games they already own at lower quality for ridiculous prices while also eating up their bandwidth? Sell remastered copies of games with multiplayer stripped out? Pawn off 3rd party multiplatform titles as 1st party exclusives?

@dz99ls: Not anymore. Sony admitted they're treating 3rd party games like The Taken King as exclusives and they've confirmed they're stretcing the 3rd party buyouts into 2016.

@dz99ls: But this has to do with the comment you made. I'm speaking in both past and present tense. Phil Spencer spoke about how he's against buying out deals and is looking to invest internally while Yoshida stated that he's treating 3rd party games like exclusives.

@yukushi: I don't think you get it. The Ultimate edition is only a remastered version of the very first first game. They didn't remaster any of the other games in the series so saying that they are offering the exact same games at a lower resolution is just wrong.

@LPDisturbedHU: Actually, if my understanding is correct, the BC Gears titles will go live on the 12th, they just aren't sending the Ultimate Edition codes out until after.

That should mean that if you already own the digital versions on X360, you can download them on the 12th, if not you have to wait till they send you the codes. I'd imagine they're doing it this way because they expect a lot of traffic that day anyway due to Fallout 4 launching, Fallout 3 coming free with every X1 copy of Fallout 4, and people deciding to download there old 360 games.

@spike6958: See, I think you misunderstood what I meant. I was hoping I'd have all 4 Gears games available digitally on my XBox One on BC launch day (which I won't, I'll just have 1,3, and Judgment because the message/codes won't be sent out till Dec 1). I have Gears 2 on disk, so it's not a huge deal, I was just hoping I wouldn't need to use my disk ever again.

Luckily, my gf is really getting into two of my favorite franchises (Gears and Halo) so we're going to play through them once they are BC. If I had a digital copy of Gears 2 (we've already played through Gears Ultimate) it'd be very convenient, but I guess we'll just stick with the disk.
