"Head-Turning" New Duke Nukem Game Teased, But Don't Expect it Soon

"I did not acquire the franchise merely so we could all experience Duke Nukem Forever."

Gearbox Software is getting started on an all-new Duke Nukem game that the developer thinks has the potential to turn heads when it is finally released. The developer's president and CEO, Randy Pitchford, announced today that Gearbox--which owns the Duke Nukem franchise--has done early concept work for a follow-up to 2011's critically panned Duke Nukem Forever.

No Caption Provided

"I did not acquire the franchise merely so we could all experience Duke Nukem Forever. That was the toll to pay to give Duke a chance," Pitchford said during his keynote address at the Develop conference today, as reported by IGN. "That said, I liked that game. I got to see it from a slightly different perspective and it was marvelous to me."

Pitchford went on to tease that Gearbox has "done some concept development [for a new Duke Nukem game]," but warned fans that this game might not come soon and Gearbox may not even develop it.

"Gearbox is very busy," Pitchford said. "I think the faster way is that a correct developer can become interested and we can work with them. I think it's a challenging problem. But, I'll tell you one thing. When it does happen, there's no doubt that the whole industry will turn its head and look."

Texas-based Gearbox is currently working on the MOBA-like console and PC shooter Battleborn, as well as a third Borderlands game and possibly even a new Brothers in Arms. Pitchford did not name any studio candidates to develop a new Duke Nukem if indeed Gearbox decides to hand it off to an outside team.

As for why Gearbox is thinking about reviving Duke Nukem, Pitchford went on to say that the Duke Nukem brand is popular with the mainstream audience, probably more than Borderlands. But for Duke Nukem Forever, many only cared about the game because of its 14-year development schedule, he said.

This isn't the first time the topic of reviving the foul-mouthed action hero has come up. Following the game's release in 2011, the CEO of the game's parent publisher Take-Two Interactive teased, "You will see future Duke [intellectual property] coming from this company."

In his 3.5/10 Duke Nukem Forever review, GameSpot critic Kevin VanOrd wrote about the game, "The bland and ugly Duke Nukem Forever turns a famous gaming icon into an embarrassment."

What would you like to see from a new Duke Nukem? Let us know in the comments below.

Well, duh, of course they were going to develop a proper version. DNF actually did very well considering and even made them a bit of profit.

@Barighm: because of the name and the nostalgia it brought to long time fans. But it was a poor game overall IMO and did not do the name justice and now those people who bought Forever will likely think twice before buying another

Couldn't be worse than the last one, that's for sure.

And it almost certainly won't be, and won't take as long either. This next one will be one studio all the way through.

Expect it in 14 more years, along with FF15.

@lostn: Only if they outsource it to 3D Realms and I guess we might as well blame FF15 on Gearbox too.

@SzotekCZ: Is that a joke? Do you have any idea how many small studios looking for a big break are out there? This game would put them on the map.

I find the hate for Gearbox to be a little childish and unfair. Yes, Aliens Colonial Marines was a disaster, I'm not going to defend that in anyway. However, to blame Duke Nukem Forever on Gearbox is stupid and an indication of how little you know about the game's history or the industry as a whole; they released the game 3D Realms had been dicking around with for over a decade and that Take Two essentially dropped into their lap, of course it was going to be a turd and they needed to pinch it out in order to move on. Imagine someone gets fired and your boss comes over and plops all of their half-finished, incompetent work on your desk and says "This is your problem now."

On the other side of things, the Borderlands franchise is extremely successful, as was Brothers in Arms. They did a great job with the Homeworld remaster and many consider Half-Life Opposing Force to be just as competent as Half-Life proper, not to mention their port work bringing Half-Life to the Dreamcast and PS2.

The fact is, Gearbox has a strong reputation that's had a couple of dark spots, one of which can barely be considered their fault.

@StHapns247: It's not about the quality of their releases, but how trustworthy they are. Seeing how they exploited people's love of the Aliens franchise with completely fake footage for pre-orders, you can't blame people for still hating Randy. AC:M is the poster-child for everything wrong with AAA pre-order culture, and it deserves to be remembered.

@unreal849: Trust shouldn't really be an issue. Gearbox cannot lie to you about their game once it's out. All you have to do is not buy games until all the reviewers, and streamers, and let's player ... ers have broken it down and you know what you're getting.

Gearbox's bull**** is still bull****, but it's bull**** that doesn't matter. Anybody who got burned by Colonial Marines shares the blame with Gearbox, and you don't need to like the folks who make your games to have a good time gaming.

@Mogan: I agree with this, it applies to every single game. There is WAY to much information out there for you to buy a game and get burned on it. All you have to do is not buy it before it comes out.

@Mogan: I agree that the consumer shares in the responsibility, however:

1 - I don't think that Gearbox (or any developer) should be given a break for lying, simple as that. "Everyone does it", or "It's just how marketing is done" are not good enough for me. We shouldn't treat developers like drug-addicted family members that keep lying to us for money.

2 - The pre-order arm-twisting. DLC bonuses, exclusive features, chunks of gameplay are all given only to people who waive their right to a reviewed product, and sign up to buy it before they know it's any good. THIS is what makes the bullshit extremely despicable.

@unreal849: I don't really care about giving Gearbox "a break" or not, because I don't think what they did with the A:CM marketing mattered. I'll throw them a side eye, but they could have shown us the coolest looking Alien game of all time prior to launch and I still would have seen the reviews and not bought it. It's not a cool thing to do, but I don't see much profit in worrying about whether the companies making my video games are trustworthy when it can't effect me one way or the other.

Pre-order bonuses, I agree, are some hot bull****. But so far I've never run into any that I just HAD to have. And I'd rather sacrifice a pre-order tchotchke and not risk $60 than have a little bit more of a game that might be bad. If I really enjoy a game, I don't mind paying a little more to get that stuff later.

@unreal849: I still feel like Gearbox gets unfairly attacked every time something of their's pops up. Obviously showing footage of something that doesn't exist is wrong, but Gearbox isn't alone in doing this yet they seem to be the only one who has to carry the weight on their back.

I doubt Rocksteady will be lambasted for the rest of their life despite Arkham Knight's PC version being the post-child for botched PC ports. Reason being their reputation which is only 2 games deep, unlike Gearbox which has way more than that under their belt.

@unreal849: Yeah, I definitely believe other's should have to be held accountable for their missteps, but I also believe in redemption. I think Gearbox's pre-Colonial Marines and post-Colonial Marines work outweighs their failure.

At the same time, don't pre-order games so this bullshit doesn't happen anymore.

Yeah I will not put my faith in Gearbox and Randy Pitchford. The only working AND playable they have made is the Borderlands games. They ruined an Alien game and lied to people about it before sale and the Homeworld Remaster collection Multiplayer is still in BETA after 5 months

I might be alone in this opinion but I have to be honest, I kinda liked Duke Nukem Forever, now I knew exactly the type of game it was, I knew it was not going to win any awards, and while playing it I knew all the negativity around it was justified, but I still enjoyed it, and I think we need a new Duke game now more than ever. But it has to better then Forever, Duke deserves better.

@silentrambo: I liked it a lot when it first came out. I initially said 8.5/10, but now that the hype's died down, and much better classic FPS reboots like Rise of the Triad, and especially Shadow Warrior have come out, I give DNF a 6.5/10. It's okay. Not great, but FAR from a 3-3.5/10. Aliens Colonial Marines deserved that rating, DNF didn't.

My biggest gripe with DNF is how much filler is in the opening. Walking around and talking to people, instead of just getting to the ass kicking. The DLC episode was a LOT more enjoyable, cause it didn't waste any time getting to the action. That, and Doctor Proton was the villain, like originally planned. My second biggest gripe was the regenerating health and weapon limits. That annoys the hell out of me.

@DrunkenPunk800: True, with the recent success of the reboots you mentioned, you could also throw the last two Wolfenstein games, it shows that classic fps can be done right if the right people are behind it. The next Duke could be awesome, just needs the right people, but it can't stay in development forever...

Here's a tip to update the character. You can keep him as a chauvinistic self obsessed man but the world around him must change.

What if he ran into people who didn't accept his old ways? But blows them away anyway. Now THAT is how you update this franchise.

Want to do one better? Have Duke go up against the SJW modern age.

@Bread_or_Decide: This is the kind of thing that's either going to feel tone-deaf and culturally outdated (if you keep it as is), or over-censored and not true to the original vision (if they "modernize" it). It really might be better if Duke stays dead.

@Ayzed: Story-wise, yes, they did. However, it's a completely different case - Wolfenstein is relatively serious, while Duke's whole shtick is being crass and offensive for the sake of being crass and offensive.

They need to be self referential but in a deadpool sort of way. The story also needs to be about Duke returning to his former glory not starting the game off as president of the united states. A down on his luck Duke regains his former glory. Maybe start him fat them have him workout as the game goes along.
