"Head-Turning" New Duke Nukem Game Teased, But Don't Expect it Soon

"I did not acquire the franchise merely so we could all experience Duke Nukem Forever."

Gearbox Software is getting started on an all-new Duke Nukem game that the developer thinks has the potential to turn heads when it is finally released. The developer's president and CEO, Randy Pitchford, announced today that Gearbox--which owns the Duke Nukem franchise--has done early concept work for a follow-up to 2011's critically panned Duke Nukem Forever.

No Caption Provided

"I did not acquire the franchise merely so we could all experience Duke Nukem Forever. That was the toll to pay to give Duke a chance," Pitchford said during his keynote address at the Develop conference today, as reported by IGN. "That said, I liked that game. I got to see it from a slightly different perspective and it was marvelous to me."

Pitchford went on to tease that Gearbox has "done some concept development [for a new Duke Nukem game]," but warned fans that this game might not come soon and Gearbox may not even develop it.

"Gearbox is very busy," Pitchford said. "I think the faster way is that a correct developer can become interested and we can work with them. I think it's a challenging problem. But, I'll tell you one thing. When it does happen, there's no doubt that the whole industry will turn its head and look."

Texas-based Gearbox is currently working on the MOBA-like console and PC shooter Battleborn, as well as a third Borderlands game and possibly even a new Brothers in Arms. Pitchford did not name any studio candidates to develop a new Duke Nukem if indeed Gearbox decides to hand it off to an outside team.

As for why Gearbox is thinking about reviving Duke Nukem, Pitchford went on to say that the Duke Nukem brand is popular with the mainstream audience, probably more than Borderlands. But for Duke Nukem Forever, many only cared about the game because of its 14-year development schedule, he said.

This isn't the first time the topic of reviving the foul-mouthed action hero has come up. Following the game's release in 2011, the CEO of the game's parent publisher Take-Two Interactive teased, "You will see future Duke [intellectual property] coming from this company."

In his 3.5/10 Duke Nukem Forever review, GameSpot critic Kevin VanOrd wrote about the game, "The bland and ugly Duke Nukem Forever turns a famous gaming icon into an embarrassment."

What would you like to see from a new Duke Nukem? Let us know in the comments below.

PS, this is the same Randy Pitchford who said the Aliens Colonial Marines sucked because gamers are sadists.

“If you're making entertainment on a grand scale, if you're reaching millions, there will be tens of thousands of people who absolutely hate us, and some percentage of those will take it upon themselves to let us known how they feel. I read it in this way: we moved those people, we touched them – even the person who hates [your game] so much, you've affected them. That’s why we fight, we're creating emotion and experience - and some people thrive on that type of feeling, some people are sadists. There is always the person who’s got to stand on the sandcastle, they must crush it. That's their way of relating to that. It’s typically a less sophisticated mind. There’s a dark part of us all that likes the idea of crushing a sandcastle, but most of us will respect it and let it be. That’s why we like playing video games where we can blow stuff up and no one gets hurt.”

That's right. millions loved it and a few vocal people drowned them out.

Gamefaqs user ratings has it rated as one of the lowest-ever rated action games, user reviews are about 3.5 / 10.

Metacritic has the Critic reviews at 4.x / 10 with user scores at 3.x / 10.

And this was a game that was hyped as an official sequel to Aliens, I remember so many of us - fan and critic - being in tense awe about this game. Waiting to lavish hate on it was not part of the plan.

I mean, Alien Isolation wasn't perfect but it got great reviews averaging 8 / 10 critic and fan but that was because it wasn't a shitty game I guess.

@Stonedwolfed: lol, exactly. People were preparing to worship the game. Not be "sadists". Yet they still screwed it up.

He could not be more off-base. If he says a new Duke Nukem game will turn heads under his direction, it probably won't be in a good way.

Duke was of it's era, a throwback to the 80s action movie hero and referenced various lines and moments of iconic macho 80s movies be it They Live, Aliens, or Evil Dead.

To make a Duke in 2015 you will have to play to modern tropes, but what's that? There have been two developments in cinema over the last few years, firstly superhero franchises, secondly reboots.

So either Duke should be about a mass of superheroes and supervillains, direct parodies, which has potential; or it should play a "meta" game of reboots... you can do the game reboot within a game kind of thing.

Just making Duke Part III with no self-awareness is going to be as cringeworthy as Duke Foreskin was.

duke nukem 3d was just out at the right place in time. I don't think this character has any chance in modern gaming now. Duke 3d was pretty good for its time since you could actually look up and down and it had gameplay that not many games had at that time but the new one was a step behind all modern games.

If they do try to release an actual good Duke Nukem game, they have to bring some new gameplay that is better then anything out there right now and not just this shock humor like picking up turds in toilets or seeing 3 bewbed monsters. Duke should get stuck in a time vortex and get sent back through different periods in time and have him fight dinosaurs and nazis at once.

Man, that guy sure knows how to talk a lot of crap. "It has the potential to turn heads, but we're not gonna develop it, we're too busy so we'll let some no name studio handle it."

I think its funny how there are many people who will knock DNF for its quality but Pitchord did add before the game's release that he wanted to revive DNF because 3D realms was the first studio he started working for. He wanted to see the dated but memorable DNF be released as a nod towards 3D realms and the duke nukem franchise. If you take a look at its development from the late 90's and early 2000's you have the polished peaces brought together into the final product. also to add having extremely high expectation for this game was probably why it left a sour taste but DNF was not intended to be a blockbuster like Pitchford led everyone to believe.

What about that Duke 3D remake developer whose project you ordered shut down out of cowardly fear that it will make DNF look bad? I bet they were very willing to develop a Duke Nukem game.

Pitchford can really be such a hack at times

Given the history of the franchise, you have to be pretty oblivious to start hyping a new DN game before you've even started to design it. A normal development cycle is a matter of years - it won't be long before people start seeing it as vaporware like DNF, they'll need to show real progress at every major gaming event to retain any confidence the market may have and a delay would absolutely kill it. And they can forget pre-orders.

I wouldn't even hint that I was working on it until it was ready to release.

I don't hold Duke Nukem Forever against them one single bit.

They basically finished the mess that had been passed around and altered and switched platforms for 14 straight years.

All things considered, they did a good job with the crap they were given to make art with.

I'm sure a new one will be fantastic.

Also, I only played Duke Nukem 3D for the first time on Monday... so go me. lol

If they contract it out they need to go with a studio like Croteam (serious sam devs) or a developer who can actually writ ea good game that has funny one-liners and jokes that fit Dukes character but are actually...funny.

@Johny_47:

I know right!

Pitchford (Gearbox) should have been Shamed from the game industry long ago. After Colonial Marines, Randy should have have commited Hari Kari and the rest of Gearbox should have jumped from their office building roof chanting "Hail to the King baby." As they fall.

I had funn with DNF, actually. It definitely had its rough spots, but I was also keenly aware that "this is a direct sequel to the first one" the whole time. i.e., realistic expectations. A lot of excellent battles in there, though. Next one should go for that Bulletstorm feel, though... Justs balls-to-the-wall nonstop chaos, whole levels falling apart in-engine, yet zero cheap-death / getting lost moments.

@Pyrosa: I agree. It had its problems, but I enjoyed DNF for what it was. I think a Bulletstorm-feel in terms of combat would be a good direction for the next DN game to take as well. I also feel they need to drop the conventional level design and give us a high-detail and modern take on the old-fashion maze-like levels complete with hidden wall panels, secrets, keycards, and switches and triggers that cause enemies to spawn in, ambush us, etc... Basically take what Shadow Warrior and Rise of the Triad have done and translate that into the Duke Nukem franchise (Honestly, I wouldn't even be against seeing DN3D remade with modern graphics and gameplay.)

so pitchford really believes duke nukem is more popular with the mainstream than borderlands? that seems a stretch to me. popularity and watching a game get torn to shreds by reviewers and youtubers are two different things, and honestly how many gamers these days remember playing the old games when they were new?

I just want to see a new game. Rethink the gameplay, and get someone new and different on the franchise with a lot of talent and ambition and I think you'll have a spectacular game.

I should also note that I loved Duke Nukem Forever. Let the hateful idiotic comments commence.
