GameSpot Q&A: What's Your Personal Ranking of the Star Wars Films?

Order the Force.

Welcome back to GameSpot Q&A, a section where we ask our staff and readers an interesting discussion question about video games or entertainment. Look at this as a forum where you and others can discuss and compare your opinions of this beloved hobby of ours. Let us know what your answer is to this week's question in the comments below!

This round's question is:

What's your personal ranking of the Star Wars films?

With Star Wars: The Force Awakens finally out, we've begun to wonder how every film in the series ranks overall. Do your old favorites still reign supreme? Or has Episode 7 ascended the ranks as your new favorite? Check out what we had to say on the matter.

Mary Kish, Senior Producer

  1. The Empire Strikes Back
  2. A New Hope
  3. Return of the Jedi
  4. The Force Awakens
  5. The Phantom Menace
  6. Revenge of the Sith
  7. Attack of the Clones

People hate on Jar Jar, but do you know what I hate? Saaaaannnnd. Attack of the Clones was the most cringeworthy, most upsetting Star Wars movie ever. I can't stand to watch it without drinking heavily. Forced romance is bad, forced romantic writing is unforgivable. But just above that is Episode 3 because they couldn't have made Anakin more of an imbalanced evil dude. The Force Awakens is smack dab in the middle, not bad, not great. I love the characters, but some of the humor was a bit too over-the-top for me. While I'm a big fan of Jabba, Return of the Jedi sits in third place, followed by A New Hope for being the original space opera. The Empire Strikes Back reigns supreme, though, because of Cloud City and its tremendous character build up.

Rob Handlery, Producer

  1. Return of the Jedi
  2. The Empire Strikes Back
  3. The Force Awakens
  4. A New Hope
  5. Revenge of the Sith
  6. The Phantom Menace
  7. Attack of the Clones

Kick it off with Return of the Jedi, no problem. That movie made me a Star Wars fan, specifically the Endor space battle and when the Mon Calamari cruiser turns after "It's a trap!" I was 10 when my older cousin pointed at the screen and said: "Look how cool it turns." It all started there.

Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983)
Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983)

However, The Empire Strikes Back is the best Star Wars movie. It has the best Han and Chewie banter, the first light saber duel, and one of the bests plot reveals in film history. The Force Awakens hit every Star Wars nerve I have, and it's fairly hard to find issues with it. A New Hope goes under it not because it's a bad movie, but I just don't enjoy watching it as much as Episode 7.

Oh boy, but Revenge of the Sith goes before the other prequels only because of its tie-in moments with the original trilogy. The remaining two prequels on my list are interchangeable. The podracing in The Phantom Menace is F'ING SICK, but JarJar and Anakin ruin it. Attack of the Clones has the Slave I and the seismic charges sound effects, but it's hard to fully appreciate those elements when that film's love story scenes are the most cringeworthy moments I've ever experienced.

I recently saw my first ever Star Wars movie: The Force Awakens. It triggered my interest enough for me to want to go back and eventually watch the other films, just so I could better appreciate what seems like a very rich universe. I heard that there's the release order, Machete order, and chronological order--I suppose that makes my journey the Zorine order? That being said, I enjoyed my first foray into the incredibly well-presented Star Wars universe. For a few hours I could almost believe that this galaxy really existed somewhere, someplace. Despite not ever having seen a Star Wars film, I was able to follow the plot quite easily, even if the reappearance of some seemingly significant characters--if the gasps from my friends were anything to go by--went over my head. I look forward to watching the others with gusto so I can better appreciate the next few films to come, however many there are!

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

Listen, The Force Awakens unquestionably succeeds as a Star Wars movie: it’s overflowing with fan service, hits on all the major themes that characterize the original trilogy, establishes two worthwhile new heroes, and features cameos from all the major players. Longtime fans, myself included, have plenty of reasons to cheer at the screen.

But as a film--just a piece of cinema, divorced from its role within the Star Wars franchise--it has some problems. Chief among them: it doesn’t really tell its own story. Instead, it basically rushes through the same series of events found in A New Hope. So as cheesy and silly as that movie might feel by today’s standards, I’ll still take the well-paced original over its modern day imitator.

Don’t get me wrong, though, the gap between my third and fourth choices is far, far smaller than the gulf between my fourth and fifth spots.

Ty Root, Production Manager

  1. The Empire Strikes Back
  2. A New Hope
  3. The Force Awakens
  4. Return of the Jedi
  5. Revenge of The Sith
  6. The Phantom Menace
  7. Attack of the Clones

Nostalgia is a powerful FORCE. Yet, I can still appreciate what The Force Awakens does to the Star Wars saga. J.J. Abrams has successfully resurrected a franchise that frankly hasn't seen a really good film in over 35 years. The Empire Strikes Back still reigns supreme, but Episode 7 revitalized the series and breathed new life into what many consider to be the greatest sci-fi fantasy of all time. True, it's a beat-for-beat CLONE of A New Hope, but it's better than the original in many regards, and sets up Episode 8 nicely.

Josh Shaw, Producer

  1. The Empire Strikes Back
  2. A New Hope
  3. Return of the Jedi
  4. The Force Awakens
  5. The Phantom Menace
  6. Revenge of the Sith
  7. Attack of the Clones

The Empire Strikes Back barely edges out A New Hope. The Cloud City clash between Vader and Luke will remain my favorite moment in all of Star Wars. The Force Awakens is a great movie, and it was a close fight with Return of the Jedi for third place. Episode 7 has to prove it can stand the test of time before it challenges the original trilogy. It crushes the prequels, though. Crushes them.

While I had my issues with the new movie, I'm not even sure I like the prequels at all. And they only ever get worse each time you watch them. I will say that Episode 1 is the best of the lot. Darth Maul, while cheesy, is ten times the villain Dooku ever was. Also, the podracing scene is possibly the only scene in the prequels that stands the test of time. The cinematography and CG are passable, but the sound design is absolutely incredible.

Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (2005)

Derek Koehler, Social Media Producer

  1. The Empire Strikes Back
  2. Return of the Jedi
  3. Revenge of the Sith
  4. The Force Awakens
  5. A New Hope
  6. Attack of the Clones
  7. The Phantom Menace

While The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi are obvious choices, I loved Revenge of the Sith. It had such a tall order of bridging the two trilogies and transitioning Anakin Skywalker into Darth Vader. I thought it did a stellar job. Anakin's seduction to the Dark Side by Emperor Palpatine came from a very real, very understandable place: the overwhelming desire to save his wife after he failed to save his mother. I'll admit, my own allegiance to the Jedi Order started to waver during the opera scene after hearing about the potential of Darth Plagueis. In addition to the Obi Wan vs. Anakin Skywalker duel on Mustafar--which in my opinion was the greatest lightsaber fight in the series--we were also treated to the Yoda vs. Darth Sidious fight and the Obi Wan/Anakin vs. Count Dooku rematch. And who could forget R2D2 racking up a kill count of his own by lighting up those Super Battle Droids?

1. Empire Strikes Back - easily the best Star Wars film and not only reassured my love for Star Wars that A New Hope started me on, but my love for film in general. I love how it starts. I love how it ends. It's just perfect for me.

2. A New Hope - Practically the same reason I love Empire except not as great

3. The Force Awakens - I loved it. Everything new is great. Not really anything bad I can say about it without it being a nitpick. I wish one major scene had more impact at first, but I teared up bad seeing it for the second time. Great movie and it rejuvenated the Star Wars Fanboy within me that I thought was gone when I started reading comics and getting into more things.

4. Revenge Of The Sith - Might be weird to see this above Jedi but I love this one as well and it mostly has to do with the Theater Experience and it hit hard when I saw it opening weekend. I'll admit it's faults but I'm willing to let them slide for it being able to bring the original trilogy and the prequel trilogy well while the whole cast stepping up from their previous outing. Honestly think that Hayden improved vastly from Ep 2 to 3. Plus, Obi Wan vs. Anakin is just pure awesomeness. I love Ewan McGregor and he always makes me shed a tear when he is yelling at Anakin at the end.

5. Return Of The Jedi - This movie is the reason why Luke is by far my favorite character in the SW universe, for now. But, it bums me out that whenever it cuts back to Han & Leia, I lose interest in the movie. Felt like something was off about Harrison Ford as Han in this movie as well. I will also credit this movie for being the reason that Green is my favorite color.

6. The Phantom Menace - I'll put it past Attack Of The Clones just for having one of the best lightsaber duels in the franchise history. The Darth Maul vs. Obi Wan is like lightsaber duels at it's peak. The intensity of the duels in Ep. 6, 7, and 3 but without the flipping of the other prequels but also has the choreography. Just pure greatness.

7. Attack Of The Clones - I don't know if there is anything I like about this film other than anything with Obi Wan and that's just cause I'm bias towards Ewan McGregor.

Zorine Te, you really need to sort your life out and watch Star Wars.

1. The Empire Strikes Back

2. Return of the Jedi

3. The Force Awakens & A New Hope, equal

4. Revenge of the Sith

5. Attack of the Clones

6. The Phantom Menace

How anyone can put the shitty prequels before any of the originals is beyond my understanding.

Empire Strikes Back, A New Hope, The Force Awakens, Return of the Jedi (it's close, but those ewoks, man), Revenge of the Sith, The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones.

The only real choice here is whether you're an Empire man or a New Hope man.

A lot of people overrating Return of the Jedi. Not a great movie, a movie about selling toys to kids.

Hmm...

1. Empire Strikes Back

2. Return of the Jedi

3. Force Awakens

4. New Hope

5. Revenge of the Sith

6. Attack of the Clones

7. Phantom Menace

My first two are probably able to be swapped based on my mood. Empire was just awesome. But it's very hard for me to top the final fight between Luke and Vader in ROTJ. So much intensity and feels. There were a couple issues I had with FA, but overall I thought it was outstanding. Happy Christmas folks.

1 - Empire 2 - New Hope (original Star Wars) 3 - Jedi 4 - Force Awakens 5 - Revenge of the Sith 6 - Clones 7 - Phantom Menace

I found the prequals just awful even though I really enjoyed Darth Maul a great deal and Revenge of the Sith was the best of the bunch for me. Force Awakens wasn't as good to me as the original 3, but much better than the prequals so that was an easy one.

I am not a fan of the Star Wars franchise, I partially saw ep 4, 5, 6 when I was little but didn't remember much about them besides ep 4. I rewatched 4, 5, 6 these past days at least to understand what the thing is about and while ep 4 and 5 were pretty good, ep 6 was pretty annoying with those stupid bear creatures. Also speaking of annoying, that fucking Chewbaka each time it roared made me cringe. There is though one thing I appreciate alot from these movies and that's the music, it's really great.

Oh and I'm guessing Biggs and Wedge came to FF7 right from Star Wars.

@Iemander Because a majority of the people posting here were kids when Phantom Menace came out. They weren't even alive when the original saga hit theaters. So, naturally, Phantom Menace is going to rank high on their list. When you're a kid, you don't find characters like Jar Jar annoying, you think they're funny and awesome.

@Iemander: Darth Maul is more of a badass than any villain in Star Wars. He doesn't talk much, though that gives me the impression that he's a legit sith assassin that's there to kill jedi's, not showing off his ideologies. Besides, the Duel of the Fates as well as the pod racing I find one of the best moments and I don't have a hate-fetish for Jar Jar Binks.

Sure the dialogue and some CGI scenes are subpar, but I found the film very entertaining and definitely my favorite among Star Wars (I love them all anyways, even the borish episode 2).

Episode 5 - Empire is just the best, unless you're a kid and hate all the talking... sadly most kids are bored with the Yoda parts especially, but they get better as you get older.

Episode 1 - I loved Phantom even though it has shitty acting, I love the discovery of it, way more ambitious than 7. I even liked the Midichlorians, I wanted "The Force" to be more science based than nonsense like in Episode 7 when somehow she gains ultimate power and beats the bad guys even though she never trained... that's just not logical. Out of all the prequels it also had the best CGI, there were at least some proper sets and Yoda was even a puppet, the other two just looked like George Lucas sat on his fat arse while two characters talked infront of a green screen. Pod Racing was cool, Darth Maul was cool and Jar Jar Binks could easily be edited out, watch The Phantom Edit if you hate him so much or Anakin saying "are you an angel?"..

Episode 4 - A perfectly paced standalone movie, which none of the others are. It's probably the movie with the least going on, but like Phantom, I just love the discovery of it all. Sadly Ep 7 diminished it a little by telling the exact same story.. god Ep 7 is so disappointing.

Episode 6 - Ewoks ruined what could have been an amazing movie, I also hate the Death Star thing coming back.... but the ending was amazing just as long as you don't have the latest edit.

Episode 7 - A poorly paced rehash of Episode 4, so much of the story made no sense, again with the Death Star... The characters were great, but they weren't developed at all because the movie felt like it was going 100mph all the time. Visually it was amazing, it didn't look all fake like the prequels, but the story sucked, it was more fan service than it's own thing.

Episode 3 - Anakin's turn to Darth Vader should have been amazing, instead you just find yourself bashing your head against a wall wondering "who wrote this shite?"... it made no sense how he was seduced. It felt so rushed, you have these badass Jedi who can dodge every laser, yet somehow they all die in the most pathetic way with Order 66.

Episode 2 - The worst garbage... wtf? The whole thing was just like a video game... since when was Yoda about lightsaber battles? He was meant to be wise with the force, beyond that, just like Palp should have been before they ruined him in Ep 3. Palp even shunned a lightsaber in Ep 6, yet now it's become this rule that they all should have them thanx to the prequels.

There is only one correct order : Original Trilogy, then the new one, then the prequels.

@Daian: Original trilogy is about action-adventure sci-fi movie . It has extraordinary vision in its time and story about far away galaxy. However jedi and sith is background salt and paper for story in those movies. For normal people these movies are more appealing.. Prequels are all about sith and jedi . For me star wars is not about rebels or Han solo or any other things it is all war between jedi and sith, all others are background.. Anakin vs Doku, anakin vs obiwan, sidious vs yoda, anakin enters the jedi temple and kill all jedis etc. These scenes has much more meaning to me rather watching some rebel destroying deathstar or han solo action- comedy. Prequels are more about star wars lore but maybe poorly acted or bad written russhed story. Still they are better than 4 or 7.
