Games will never be considered culture if they don't broach sensitive subjects, Kojima says

Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima says "games will only be games" if developers don't "cross that line"; expects Ground Zeroes to be controversial.

If games are to be thought of as more than just that--games--they need to broach sensitive subjects, according to Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima. During a roundtable interview with the veteran designer attended by GameSpot, Kojima outlined his vision for how video games can reach the cultural level of movies and books.

"If we don't cross that line, if we don't make attempts to express what we really want to express, games will only be games," Kojima said. "If we don't try to go beyond that, we won't be able to achieve what movies or novels have achieved. I didn't want to stay away from these things that could be considered sensitive. If we don't go that far, games will never be considered as culture.

Also during the interview, Kojima likened himself and his team at Kojima Productions to the characters from Breaking Bad, who stop at nothing to make their message known.

"In Breaking Bad, I also see that these guys are trying to go to the limit; trying to take it as far as they can to try to get their message across. For us as well. In games we have to go to the limit; we want to stay within this limit of how far...pushing the boundaries of conveying our message. We look around and we don't see too many games like this; that is unfortunate," he said.

For Metal Gear Solid V, the game's central theme is that of revenge. And to get this point across, prologue Ground Zeroes will feature some scenes that Kojima expects will be controversial. That said, he explained that he's not going to tone down the game's content just because some people might take issue with what he has to say.

"One of the main topics of Metal Gear Solid V is this chain of revenge. That is something that I really didn't want to step back from, I really didn't want to go around it," Kojima said. "I know that I will probably face a lot of criticism because of it but I really wanted to portray that accurately."

Finally, Kojima stressed that though Metal Gear Solid V is going to push the envelope, he doesn't think all games need to do this. "I don't think necessarily that all games have to go this far; in our case we have a strong message that we want to convey," he said.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, the prologue to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, launches March 18 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4.

One only needs to look to the ME3 ending debacle to realize that gamers aren't savy enough yet to let games develop as an art form on their own merits. Most of them are like spoiled little children who wouldn't know culture if Picasso slapped them in the face.

<< LINK REMOVED >> If you commissioned Picasso and he said he was painting a painting that you'd like, very similar to his other paintings, told you how awesome it was and how it was gonna be better than the other paintings he'd already made, and then smeared his feces over a canvas and gave it to you, would you not be just the slightest bit betrayed?

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Well, games aren't based on commision. It's an existing product. I really disliked the ending of Enders Game, but I didn't send the author a strongly worded letter or raised money for him to change a work of art he made and I chose to buy.

There's also the story of the mayor complaining to Michelangelo about the nose of the statue of David. Michelangelo obliged, got up on a ladder and let some shavings drop from his hand, pretending to change the nose. When he got back down, the mayor was pleased and the rest is history.

(moral of the story: having money and an opinion does not exclude anybody from being an blithering idiot and sometimes you should just let artists do their thing)

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> My point was more about Bioware trying to think outside of the box a bit and getting slammed by the community for trying something different. I didn't think the ending was perfect. Video games are a growing medium and the immature backlash for trying anything different, is why we have an industry of sequels an COD clones. Developers can broach sensitive subjects all they want, but if there's not a slew of tweens willing to spend their parents' cash because the entire game wasn't spoonfed and wrapped up in a little bow tie for them, games are never going to amount to anything more than a distraction for a generation of anonymous xenophobes.

@DutchZombie @JimmeyBurrows You don't really think it was just because it was "Different" was the real problem with it , and why the gaming community flipped out about it do you?

We all expected an Ending like that, as one of results of making the wrong choices and causing a no win situation. Again as ONE OF is the points I messed stress, but sadly we didn't get ANYTHING different they were all the same in essence.

What we were PROMISED for over what? 5 years?, what we paid over anywhere from 200 to 400 bucks for depending on the dlc and such you bought, and what we GOT and which was the ONLY THING we got it, which was something not even designed by the original creator, just some moron who thought he was a genius and didn't follow the proper processes for doing such a thing.

Along with how poorly it was done, how the extend ending answered, NOTHING in fact made more plot issues, went against it's own lore hand crafted from the beginning, and even the DEVELOPERS left said that even though WE had to be forced into a dead end, they didn't HAVE to follow any of the shit they shoveled into our mouths and expected to enjoy, as stated in the interviews of ME4 where they didn't HAVE to use any of the endings as a template for the next game and could just do whatever they wanted to the lore.

THAT'S what we were pissed about, not that we didn't GET it... or that they thought outside the box, it was bad cause it was BAD.

You always see a half dressed woman in movies in like a scene or two and movies that do it for extended periods are kinda telling you they have nothing else to show you. So Quiet dressed like the hooker from breaking bad season 1 is not a good sign.

Honestly why is she going into combat dressed like that? Is it hot? Or does she need to feel the earth as she shoots? Or she's horny as hell? Or she's taking a stand on scantly dressed men in video games? Or Kojima just likes Hentai....

Wow so many haters, for me i loved Kojima games, they have everything ranging from great tracks to realism to sci-fi whether its action or joke metaphors or just plain comedy infused with a healthy amount of conspiracy fiction and philosophical views that makes you really think deep when you hear them.

The voice acting and speeches are remarkable and memorable along with the characters and art style.

Gameplay is insanely good and well balanced across all difficulties.

Any1 remembers firing up MGS on ps1 for the 1st time? or even Snake Eater on ps2? it's mind blowing in all the aspects i mentioned above. Whats not to like? I say experiment more and give us games that actually sparks your imagination and thought process along with the possibilities.

Maybe its just me but i like games that makes me think about it's content during and after playing it.

While everyone trash talks him, I agree. Games have yet to be taken seriously by the mainstream. They still fall short of film and TV, but are getting there, and he makes a good point. If games want to have a place right besides other forms of entertainment, they need to go beyond just making fun games to play. Indie games have done much to push the cultural importance of gaming and games have made massive strides to become important purveyors of messages and themes. But gaming is still reliant on being a game. When it gets to a point where people view games, TV, movies, and books are equal, legitimate forms of entertainment, capable of having something to truly say, then I think that it will achieve equal cultural status.

<< LINK REMOVED >> It's important no doubt. But I think games are about a lot more than just gameplay, and "making it fun". And without everything else gameplay isn't shit to me. What is the point of making Bioshock infinite or gone home etc. It wasn't just so you can sit there and have a 60 fps shootout with smooth animation and awesome mechanics etc.
I just feel like people are leaving behind what I treasure most about games, Why I even bother playing games. The stories. The Themes, The Worlds. Peoples ideas, so on and so forth.
I don't know man I guess I take the medium more seriously than a lot of people and play for more than just fun, an escape lol.
If gone home was a movie in first person I think it would've destroyed the entire experience. And you'd probably sit there asking yourself wtf you just watched.

@59Hertz It's not the only thing, but it's definitely the most important. The point of a game is you play it. If you're going to sacrifice making it fun to play then why bother making it a game? Why not a film or a book!? I guarantee, if Gone Home had been a movie shot in first person like Cloverfield, you would have literally walked away having witnessed the same experience.

There is so much wrong with your statement man...Really. This is why games now are shit because people believe that "gameplay" is the one and only key to a game. Everything else is just a side quest.
Gone home deserved every fuckin award it got and then some. And if you say that game is not worthy then you are the exact reason why the industry is turning to a pile of shit.
It's hard for me to stomach how many people don't give a shit for creativity or games that take on meaning.
You guys mine as well just keep telling the industry to continue pushing out more COD's and such and call it a day. Because the gameplay itself is great right? It's got nothing else but hey, gameplay is good so I guess it's a winner. I'd much rather have the opposite.
At least then it would have more meaning and worth as a game imo.

The gameplay was pretty much in tow with the first Bioshock and gave similar options for how to play, not to mention that the skyhook was an excellent addition to the game and gave it a fun, fast paced variety. The story is not only excellent, but the game is a lot of fun to play. And exploring Columbia was fascinating.
