Free PS4, PS3, and Vita Plus Games for August Include Crysis 3, Fez, and New Releases

Road Not Taken and Metrico will both be free right out of the gate for Plus members.

The lineup of free PlayStation Plus games for the month of August has been revealed for the United States and Canada, thanks to the discovery of a video on the PlayStation YouTube channel. As is now the norm, it consists of two games each for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Vita. Several of the games have been out for some time, while two others will be free as soon as they launch in August.

One such game is Road Not Taken (launching August 5), a sort of roguelike puzzle game from Spry Fox, makers of the hit mobile game Triple Town. (We got a look at the game at E3 and walked away intrigued.) Also free for Plus members with a PS4 is Fez, the brilliantly designed puzzle-platformer from developer Phil Fish.

PS3 owners get a pair of games originally released last year: first-person shooter Crysis 3 and open-world exploration game Proteus.

Vita owners get Vanillaware's gorgeous 2D action RPG, Dragon's Crown (having gotten Dragon's Crown previously, Europeans get Lego Harry Potter: Years 5-7), and one game releasing for the first time on August 5: Metrico. This is another game that falls loosely within the boundaries of the puzzle-platformer genre, but it offers a difficult-to-explain twist by making infographics a centerpiece of the gameplay.

Three of August's games are available on multiple systems with cross-buy support (Fez on PS4, PS3, and Vita; and Proteus on PS3 and Vita), meaning you'll end up with more than two free games on PS3 and Vita. Dragon's Crown doesn't support cross-buy with its PS3 and Vita versions, but according to a PlayStation Blog comment from Sony's Kristine Steimer, Plus members will get both versions.

As always with Plus games, these are free to download for all PlayStation Plus members and remain yours for as long as you continue subscribing to the service.

when will ps4 owners actually get a free game worth playing? i purchased my ps4 5 months ago and i still yet have seen a game that i dont debate if i even want to download....... if you were to look at my game library it looks like a 5 year old's system and august is no different. come on now

i liked resogun and got the platinum trophy in it but it still wasnt a game i could spend more then a couple hours playing. i have downloaded just about every free game and there is not one i log in on my ps4 and look to play

This is why getting a console halfway into it's cycle is the way to go. the console is cheaper, upgraded, and glitch free. There is a decent size library of good games (metacritic 85 or higher in the genre of your liking) that you can pick up for less than $30. And the membership clubs actually have decent older games to offer for free.

@nhwilber Or if you have a good job you can start buying the new gen consoles as they roll out and pay attention to your backlog in between big releases for the new consoles. Nothing wrong with waiting but no need to be jealous of the 'haves'.

Dissappointed, I hoped the rumors of PS3 getting Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon were true. I'll enjoy Proteus maybe, but Crysis 3 is a shallow flamboyant display of graphics technology with no valuable gameplay to me...

Also when has ANY console launch been particularly good? Look at the 360 and PS3 launches where the machines themselves were prone to failure and the games were pretty lacking too. Devs need time with the machines before we start seeing the real mindblowing stuff.

I played the FEZ demo and it was pretty solid demo! Can't wait to download all of these games. The Poem "Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost is of course, legendary - I hope the game will be decent!
