Finalized 3DS photos leaked

[UPDATE] Chinese factory worker posts purported images of last hardware revision for Nintendo's 3D-capable handheld before shipping in Japan next month; video pulled.

On January 19, Nintendo will jump-start 2011 with an all-day event in which many believe the publisher will illuminate the remaining secrets surrounding its upcoming glasses-free 3D handheld, the 3DS. With such questions as a North American release date and price still outstanding, it appears as if a number of the 3DS's final specs have been preemptively revealed, courtesy of photos surreptitiously taken by an individual who claims to work in a 3DS manufacturing plant.

A look at the 3DS, fresh off the assembly line.
A look at the 3DS, fresh off the assembly line.

As reported by enthusiast blog 3DSbuzz.com, the images of the handheld device first appeared on a Japanese gaming forum, before being pulled by moderators. The photos show a "Cosmo Black" 3DS that strongly resembles the model Nintendo has been showing since the 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo, the event Nintendo chose to formally unveil the device. However, as the gaming blog notes, Nintendo has slightly tweaked the hardware by flattening the Start, Home, and Select buttons to be flush with the device.

The factory worker also delivered a handful of previously unknown 3DS system specifications. Namely, the device will reportedly feature 96MB of RAM, as well as a 1,300mAh battery. The DS Lite included a 1,000mAh battery, while the DSi's battery clocked in at 840mAh.

In addition to the photos, the employee also posted a since-pulled YouTube video of the smuggled device, one that shows relative size differences between the 3DS, DSi, and DS Lite.

The 3DS is scheduled to arrive in Japan on February 26, costing ¥25,000 ($306), and before April in Europe and North America. A number of first- and third-party titles have already been announced for the handheld, including installments in the Kid Icarus, Mario Kart, Metal Gear Solid, and Dragon Quest franchises. For more information, check out GameSpot's latest breakdown of the 3DS.

Haha go China! Gotta say it looks even better than I expected! But $300? That seems like a little much. I guess it's to be expected with the kind of technology put into this bad boy. Better start saving now people!

Ouch that price might bite Nintendo in the butt. Hopefully it has a lower price upon release in North America.

I don't really understand the opinion that it's ugly. It looks pretty... normal to me. Is it supposed to be made of alligator hide or something? Be coated in fur? Have some wavy sci-fi space design? Invisible? Not have buttons? . Looks like a device that has function, and that function is: playing games. Oh, no, I get it. You guys want racing stripes, because that will make it look fast, right?

@madmanjim DS might actually be #1 at the moment. It's over 144 million, and will imminently be unquestionably ahead of the PS2 by the time 3DS launches here. DS will most likely be above 165 mil before it is discontinued. And thoughI'm very certain3DS will sell fantastically, I think it will meet more competition in the nongamer demographic from the vast array of smartphones, and even the iPad. I forsee Nintendo still being far dominant over Sony in handhelds, as well. But that's without knowing anything about PSP2.

$306 for an handheld console is a quite a high number. I wonder how much it will cost in Europe. I can say it will be higher than $300 (my guess is €250)

@TRIPLE_T83242: The 3DS is capable of all the functions of the PSP... and more for that matter. Anyway even if it wasn't a LOT of people over the age of 10 will own one. Not having the ability to play movies or music won't stop people buying it.

@DaneGamer: Sony did the exact same warnings when they announced the 3D tech for the PS3. I saw a video which had a doctor saying that Nintendo were being too cautious with the warnings because the 3D effects don't 'damage' eyes, they simply put a little strain on them, making you feel a little tired etc... They are beign cautious because American people generally have a habit for suing for ridiculous reasons, so they did the warning to stop this. Anyway you don't have to view the games in 3D, that's what the slider is for.

How good can 3d really be on a mini screen? I mean. HD on a tv smaller than 32" is almost pointless.

By Chinese factory worker, they actually meant Chinese kid factory worker. I don't know much about the new DS, but if they want someone over the the age of 10 to buy one they need to have it be capable of all the media features that the PSP has.

@hazuki Its probably going to be $300, which isn't surprising at all, really. But beyond that, you're not taking into account the fact that conversation rates only translate into how currencies compare across countries -- not how salaries/pay rates/cost of living translate between countries -- or even regions. A dollar is a dollar in both Texas and California, but cost of living in Cali is more than 75% higher. $200 in Japan could easily be the comparative pay rate equivalent to $250 in the US. The fact that its consistent across various companies means incredibly unlikely its some kind of conspiracy.

The wii was 200$ in japan, 250$ in america. The psp was 170$ in japan, 250$ in america. Check out other systems. Usually japan is about 50$ cheaper on systems. So don't crap yourselves when you see a 300$ 3ds on shelves. MAYBE 250$

@DaneGamer those warnings are just for safety concerns, like posting a "beware of earthquake" sign in california. it doesn't guarantee that something bad will happen.

@Yasviele The no glasses 3D doesn't come up on any sort of video. It has to be in your line of vision for you to see the effects.

Everyone Listen Up! or Just Read This Actually! The U.S. price is still TBA, To Be Announced. The 3DS will cost you $306 if you buy it directly from Japan upon release, if you just wait Nintendo will tell us what price it will be in the States and when we get it. My guess would be priced between $100 - $200, probably leaning toward the middle.

@ultima_weapon21 I think that's incorrect. There are at least a few Wii games that don't have motion controls. The Metal Slug Anthology is one of them. But you're right, they are quite rare. I personally don't like this. Just because you are deploying your game on the Wii doesn't mean developers SHOULD include motion controls. This results in some extremely forced motion control schemes.

No offense but it's an ugly machine! It's so god damn ugly now that i actually think about it. And Nintendo knows it themselves, they are just waiting 1 year to release the new 3DS lite, and then 3DSi and so forth and so on... but with the warnings that came out the other day about this machine, i think we are gonna either have alot of blind kids or a new virtual boy!

@OldStupidGeezer theres not over 32 versions of PSP, just cos its a different colour doesnt mean its another version. By your logic, if a motor company makes a car, and it comes it 20 different colours, its not 20 different versions of a car, they still have same hardware, its just cosmetic changes, not a new version. There is 4 PSP versions

Look, I'm ready with my sleeping bag for launch but... are we really doing this with RAM again? RAM has been cheap for a decade now so why only 96MB? --Seriously, Nintendo don't be shy to go minimum 512MB-1GB of RAM.
