Final Fantasy VIII arises on PSN

PlayStation Store Update: Square Enix's classic JRPG joins Puzzlegeddon on PS3 store, while PSP gets MGS: Portable Ops, Buzz! Quiz World, more.

Square Enix hasn't given gamers much of a heads-up about Final Fantasy VIII's arrival on the PlayStation Network. With initial word buried in a PlayStation newsletter earlier this week, the Japanese role-playing game is now available for both the PlayStation 3 and PSP as a PSone Classic for $9.99.

Elsewhere on the PlayStation Store for the PS3, Pieces Interactive has released Puzzlegeddon for $9.99. A matching puzzle game, Puzzlegeddon offers single- and multiplayer action, as gamers move tiles to form chains of like colors to deal damage to their opponents.

The PSP's downloadable library also sees a significant infusion of new content this week. With Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker now carrying a May 25 release date, Konami has added Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops and the multiplayer-centric Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Plus to the PSP's online store for $14.99 and $9.99, respectively. MGS-enthused gamers can also pick up the Metal Gear Solid Digital Graphic Novel for $9.99 this week.

Hug her, you fool!
Hug her, you fool!

A trifecta of racing games heads to the PSP this week, as Sega Rally Revo ($15.99), F1 2009 ($39.99), and Ridge Racer ($14.99) are all now available. Lastly, Buzz! Quiz World, which lets gamers connect to the PS Store to download new quizzes and other content, is available for $19.99.

A full list of the week's new PlayStation Store content, including themes, wallpapers, demos, and add-on content, is available on the official PlayStation Blog.

is there a way to play the old PS RPGs on PS3 from the original CDs? If the PS3 could play it via downloaded content it may also play the original with a special fix or so? i know its possible for PSP. if someone knows please send me a message.

Xenogears, Chrono Cross, and Galerians please. I don't want to go on eBay only to have them released a few months later.

Just an update on this, if you're Australian or anyone else that falls into the Europe PSN zone, FF8 is STILL on track for a January release so no need to go to the trouble of making a US account and purchasing a US PSN card on EBay. << LINK REMOVED >>

I will be getting FF8. It is the first FFgame I played, and to me, it is better than FF7.

As is the case with Ejay_Kain, I can't find FF8 on my PSN either. I can only see the FF7 full game for $15.95 (US or AU?) and a whole heap of free FF13 and FF14 trailers. Wth?

Wow, too bad I recently picked up a greatest hits copy. I should have waited for this because I'm sure they sharpened up the picture quality removing lots of graininess.

"TC_Squared FFX's system is the only one that I had to down-right cheat and use action replay codes (giving me a max supply of stat spheres) in order to enjoy it. That way, any time I got to a blank sphere on the grid I could fill it with what the characters need (Auron: Accuracy, Wakka: Strength, etc.) This imbalance in the battle system caused some features to be pointless... Such as Lulu having a weapon that inflicts death upon an enemy. Her accuracy is so terrible that there were barely any enemies that it worked on. To top it off, I was able to kill the Omega Weapon of this game in two moves. Anyway, my point is that people who insult the FFVIII battle-system but not the one in FFX (and many people have done that) are hypocrites. The Omega Weapon in FFVIII still held up a fight." Now try the actual hard boss fights, was the final one called Nemesis? I can't remember. Anyway the point is Omega in X is not the hardest!!!

It was nice to have FFVIII available just like FFVII was and hope to see the others follow in their footsteps to be available in the near future for the PSP. Even though I've enjoyed playing these titles over-and-over again, it makes it even more exciting now that my kids get to enjoy my addiction with Final Fantasy titles.

In the international original, there was no way of getting a 100% at this game, as one of the collector's cards could only be found if you completed the (ridiculous) chocobo sidequest that required the "pocket station" in the end. I wonder how this works in the download version...

I almost bought VIII on PSN until i looked over to the bookshelf and saw the game sitting there pretty along with FFVII, FFIX, FFtactics, Vagrant Story, Xenogears, DQVII, Grandia, Suikoden II and so on. Oh man, RPGs on psone were the bomb and Squaresoft could never do wrong...

fluerxx, Yes, you do get to move into other characters' sphere grids...when you're about 2/3 of the way through the game. I'm not saying that FFX was a bad game. I lost count of how many times I've played through it. I'm just saying that it had the most unbalanced battle-system of any FF game I've played (4-12). And the fact that I was able to beat the Omega Weapon with Kimahri using lancet once, then Yuna using Bahamut's Overdrive once proves it. Also, I clearly didn't suck at the game, like you said, because I'm complaining about it being too easy.

@TC_Squared. Evidently, you just sucked at the game. It's strange you whine about real class making, needing the right character for the right enemy. Auron fought the strongest of enemies, and he got some Blitzball player to take out the weedy birds. PS, Sup Customize weapons and moving onto another persons sphere grid.

@tom_cat_01 @doraemon1987 Just get yourselves a US account and buy PSN cards on eBay, I'm in the UK but all of my PSOne classics (about 8 of them) were bought from the US store. Search eBay for sbblair, I know a bunch of people who buy from this guy, fast code delivery via email.

I actually found FFX to have the most broken system. Not the concept of it; the sphere grid was a great idea. How it was actually laid out, however, kind of sucked. 1/4 of the spheres are blank, intended for the player to fill it with whatever sphere upgrade they want. The problem is that you barely recieve any of the items you need to do just that, so most of the blank spheres on the grid are left blank. Additionally, the characters' stats are so rediculously low that they couldn't defend themselves. Wakka could kill the fast flying birds, but is too weak to harm the slow amored enemies. Auron could kill the slow, armored enemies but will miss the fast flying ones. I found it kind of stupid that Auron, the greatest Guardian in the land, couldn't even hold up against a bird. To top it off, the Aeons were way too powerful. The boss fights were hardly boss fights when an Aeon was summoned. The Knight/Mage abilities have been a long time tradition of FF games, but Cecil and Zidane could still defend themselves in a battle against mages without having to call in Tellah or Vivi to save them. You have 6 guardians on your team, meant to protect the summoner, but the summoner is actually the only character that could defend herself in random battles.

Why do so many people complain about the battle-system in this game? Every FF has a system with it's pros and cons, and one can usually find a way to work around what they may not like. For example, if you don't like drawing magic from enemies, then use the GF abilities to turn items into magic--it's quicker anyway. I agree that drawing magic from enemies can get boring after a while, which is exactly why I do what I just said in the previous sentance.

kingsi7e, PS3--all versions of it--are backwards compatible with PS1 games. This is not a scam. It's for people who no longer have the games but want them. I personally favor it, because I sold FFVII for $50 then bought it on PSN for $10, and sold FFVIII for $30 then bought it on PSN for $10.

@ Kingsi7e At this rate we'll get FFX when PS4 is revealed, most likely ensuring cross-support. I am glad to see MGS:PO on here, where I live every store has been sold out for the last 2 years.
