Final Fantasy 8 Remaster Fixes One Of Its Funniest Memes

"You're the best looking guy here."

During Square Enix's press conference at E3 2019 back in June, the company announced a remastered version of Final Fantasy VIII would be coming to every current-generation platform later this year--as well as showing off more of Final Fantasy VII: Remake, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, and Final Fantasy XIV.

Final Fantasy VIII is one of the more divisive entries in the long-running series, namely due to a contentious magic system that required you to "Draw" spells from enemies as opposed to using a traditional MP gauge. It was, however, notable for a drastic increase in audiovisual fidelity and a more realistic art style.

It also spawned a hilarious meme.

There's a ballroom dance scene early on in Final Fantasy VIII's story. Protagonist Squall meets his future love interest Rinoa for the first time, and she pays him a nice compliment.

Now, Square Enix has ruined this glorious moment in Final Fantasy VIII's remaster by having the gall to make it look too good.

We'll give them props for showcasing a remaster's graphical enhancements by acknowledging a five-year-old meme, even if it is a crying shame.

8 has always been the best Final Fantasy, to me. 7, while a great game, is overrated. I feel like everyone cites that as the best one just because it was the first of its kind. As far as PS One FF games go, I’d have to put them in order of 8, 9 and 7.

@justthetip: I dunno, man. FF8 had some serious flaws in it, and I'm not talking about relative things like the story. There really aren't any major flaws in FF7 aside from the blocky graphics, but that's just age for you. People complain about the story and the ease but those aren't really flaws, just taste.

@Barighm: I would say that FFVII had a major flaw in its combat system, but most people oversee it because it is usually the first jrpg they experienced, and therefore considered it to be the "base" and "proper" way to design such a game. That flaw was that combat could turn from an exasperating turtle-slow experience into autoattack insta-win by simply switching 1 or 2 materias.

FFVIII took the modularity of the materia system and got it up to 11. Which of course allowed experienced players to take advantage of it on their 2nd, 3rd etc runs, and have a team at lvl9 with 3000hp, 100str etc (end game stats for a proper 1st time run-through) just after fighting the 1st boss of the game.

I think FFIX had the best combat of the 3 PS era games, because each character had a defined playstyle and couldn't become a killing machine that could solo the entire game by just putting on some materia or junctioning some magic.

@Dark_Mits: I really did like the integration of items and GF's to a characters development in leveling. Was totally unique and still is to this day.

@ecs33: I don't deny that. It was unique and it was quite amazing. But the numbers were so off that it broke the game.

@Barighm: what are the serious objective flaws?

yes imo ffvii pretty much redefined jrpg and still is about the best grandfather of them (yes there are great great grandfathers too). i still love playing around with the materias.

but still, whether it comes to visual, audio, story or world placement i did enjoy viii more. the bit with space and alienlaser seemingly fucking up the world were better than anything in vii. the combat is a bit unique in that its a bit weird but in its own terms its good

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: Squall levels wildly faster than the rest of the party which messes with the level scaling, leveling can actually hinder the player which is counter intuitive for the genre, drawing spells is a tedious process that is no fun regardless of whether you can avoid it or not (there must have been a more fun way to do it), way too many exploits, I remember half the cast being markedly weaker than others due to the way limits and junctions worked (FF7 it was like a couple characters, but materia and gear can make up for weaknesses), too easy to miss some GFs.

Some more relative things would be how boring the story is, the obvious shoe-horned nature of Laguna, weird plot twists, the menu UI being a little clunky in some ways, cars instead of chocobos, and I HATED the boss theme.

This isn't to say FF8 is a bad game. It's still a very good RPG and had some great ideas that I'm surprised haven't been implemented in later FF's like the Guardians having their own abilities and feeling like a part of the team or the daily salary (which was also easily exploited). And Triple Triad was great fun. I just don't get how someone can claim a game like FF7, with none of the above issues, can be considered "overrated" compared to a game that is universally accepted to have some totally unfun mechanics.

@justthetip: 8 had a unique battle system, but it didn't sit well with a lot of people. 7 was much more accessible and that's why it's more renowned, imo.

Can't wait!

FF8 is the only Final Fantasy I haven't re-played through since its release.

They never cared to remaster it so I never went back to it!
Can't wait to mash button like crazy to boost the Summons!
(I loved that concept!)

Ah yes, the "divisive" entry in the series again. So the original review says, "the latest Final Fantasy is the greatest game ever to bear the name." Now we get articles like this FF VIII Remaster Announced, where the writer insists something's wrong if you actually like this game. As cynical as I can be at times, I miss when we were just generally excited about games instead of scornful husks looking for something wrong at every turn.

I need more coffee...

@lionheartssj1: meh, i more saw it like contest of champions. in pretty much every magazine one of them (vii and viii) got like 94 and the other got 95

so its like do you think jordan or magic is better? or senna or prost? or eastwood or nicholson?

yes there were a couple of odd outs but even with modern games there are games gamespot gives a 4 while metacritic average is 8

@lionheartssj1: Author's not implying something's wrong with you if you like the game...rather just acknowledging that people had some differing, sometimes strong, opinions about the magic system. In other words, some jerk out there might think something is wrong with you for liking it, but the author acknowledging that jerk's existence doesn't mean he's agreeing with that jerk.

@lionheartssj1: One more supporting you right here!

I really liked the "Draw" system and the Summon boost mashing buttons which was a great challenge which made the combat system even more active. (Compared to other FF where casting a summon was just looking at a 10-20 seconds animation a bit mind-numbed.)

@silv3rst0rm: I liked it too. But I can see why people may hate it. If you forgot to draw certain spells that only certain enemies had for instance you had no chance of beating Omega, and so you had to start a new game and do it over again.

I thought 7, while being more simple, was more accessible. That's why it's the playstation era FF everyone thinks about first.

@ecs33: Omega was easily beatable by refining like, 2 cards that would no longer have any use at that point anyway. IIRC Bahamut's gave 100 Megaelixers, and I think it was Gilgamesh that gave 100 Holy Wars. General speaking, anyone that explored would end up getting both of those. Then it's just a matter of hitting Omega with Meltdown, using a Holy War, and then just going to town. If you had a source of Aura spells, casting those before the Holy War would super-break the fight since then you could just spam Limits the entire time instead.

@Megawizard: Yea, I remember having a dependence on those items to beat Omega, just been so long to remember specifics. But I remember a couple of those items and draws not being available at end game if you missed getting them earlier. I must have hated the card game to avoid going that path, lol.

@silv3rst0rm: Draw was a great concept. The issue was that way too many people liked the idea of being overpowered or couldn't resist themselves from drawing 100 of every spell so they considered the game too grindy. Discounting the fact that you could easily play through the game only drawing from the normal random encounters you fought. Even to this day I see people saying they hate it because the card game was required because they can't resist getting super powerful spells early on through it.

Overall I liked the game. The summon boost concept was decent, but IMO it wasn't a concept that was fun for the number of times you used it. It got old quick.

@silv3rst0rm: I wouldn't call mashing a single button in a red-light/green-light manner a great challenge, but it was a decent break from the norm. The concept of boosting your summons was a good one, but the execution was lazy. I wonder if a randomized sequence of button presses would have been more fitting, along with maybe having the prompts mid-screen which would have been a huge improvement over being forced to stare at the bottom corner of your screen while the summon animation was shunted off into your peripheral vision.

@richardwakeling: Sorry, Richard. I guess sometimes I get worn down by the state of things. Having been around for most of home gaming as we know it, it boggles my mind how far we've come with games and yet we've grown so cynical towards them. I used to get Nintendo Power and Sega Visions and almost everything was met with enthusiasm and a palpable excitement for things to come. I'm sure a lot of this just comes with getting older and I know there's tons of love to be found in the gaming community, but I guess that looking glass just keeps getting dirtier. I had to stop reading Kotaku stuff a couple years ago because I felt like every game had to be met with some checklist of possible offenses or guilt, so I guess I still get gun-shy sometimes, my apologies.

Plus FF VIII is my favorite of the series, so I have to defend it, of course!
