Final Fantasy 8 Remaster Fixes One Of Its Funniest Memes

"You're the best looking guy here."

During Square Enix's press conference at E3 2019 back in June, the company announced a remastered version of Final Fantasy VIII would be coming to every current-generation platform later this year--as well as showing off more of Final Fantasy VII: Remake, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, and Final Fantasy XIV.

Final Fantasy VIII is one of the more divisive entries in the long-running series, namely due to a contentious magic system that required you to "Draw" spells from enemies as opposed to using a traditional MP gauge. It was, however, notable for a drastic increase in audiovisual fidelity and a more realistic art style.

It also spawned a hilarious meme.

There's a ballroom dance scene early on in Final Fantasy VIII's story. Protagonist Squall meets his future love interest Rinoa for the first time, and she pays him a nice compliment.

Now, Square Enix has ruined this glorious moment in Final Fantasy VIII's remaster by having the gall to make it look too good.

We'll give them props for showcasing a remaster's graphical enhancements by acknowledging a five-year-old meme, even if it is a crying shame.

Squall looks soft and weak with the remaster. I like his rugged pixel face from before.

Anyways, glad its remastering completely now. I hope they get the music right this time and don't use garbage midi conversions.

Not much of a fan of the draw system either, felt like a big waste of time, but i'll play the PC version and just cheat and not waste time drawing spells. Just gonna play it for the soundtrack and storyline, i played it twice through before on the psx so no need wasting time grinding on the remaster.

@Yams1980: You're right it's not just fixing up graphics, his face in the original cutscenes had a steely look. His hair looks too perfect, he's a soldier/merc not a prince.

But I actually liked the draw system. Not a fun game to play with a guide trying to min max it where it quickly becomes broken (and tedious), but it's so different from other games, it's fine. The ability where you turn cards into spells also means you don't have to use it if you don't really want to.

The graphics look better, but that does not look like Squall to me. Not a fan of the new model.

Well, there's no excuse now to not release a physical "Final Fantasy classics remastered collection" including FFVII, FFVIII & IX.

This was my favored PSone FF game, however I want one thing changed in the remaster, the only thing I dint like in the original, I want the game to remember my guardian/magic settings!!! It was so annoying to have to redo everything every time I change characters after a crucial story event

@baral-o: What do you mean? The game always let you switch the complete setups around between characters, GFs and all magic spells.

Was one of my least liked FFVIII but this time around I might finish it. FFIX is what I want to see remastered or better yet become a remake. That game was awesome.

"a contentious magic system that required you to "Draw" spells from enemies as opposed to using a traditional MP gauge."

After no more than an hour into the game you are not ever required to draw spells, unless you refuse to pay attention to how the game's various systems work; teaching your GFs very simple abilities lets you refine common items found after every battle into almost all the main magic spells in the game. You'd think one of the biggest gaming websites on the internet would get this right instead of pushing bogus information. Oh well.

I loved FF8. To this day aside from Heavensward and Shadowbringers it remains my favorite FF game. Sure you could break the game pretty easily with the item conversion and junction system to make it a complete cakewalk, but it was fun having that kind of flexibility and power.

I never did like the Draw system, as I would sit and draw every new spell I found in 1 battle until I reached 100. Only able to draw 1 to 3 spells at a time took so long. After that I never wanted to use the spells because it would affect stats. The rest of the battle system was fun and the story is what kept me going. Also, the addicting card battle minigame.

@lion2447: You never needed to do that. As the game explains you can teach your GFs "MagRF" abilities that let you refine the common items you find after battles into magic. You can start doing this almost immediately after the tutorial portion of the game.

@lion2447: Well I have such OCD too, never sell your old equipment falls there too, however FF8 also didn't have 1-3 draw, it was dependent on Magic stat of the character drawing, so Zell who is worst at magic out of your party members, draws the lowest number, and it still isn't 3 if he's equipped and junctioned properly.

1-3 draws would only happen on spells like Ultima and Meteor which have the highest draw resistance (44 and 42). but by the time you get to enemies that have them, you're more likely to draw 3-5. More common spells have low draw resistance so you're likely to draw between 7-9 most of the time.

That all being said... the only problem of draw system for me was the fact that all of your best magic is tied to your stats, thanks to Junction, so you're more likely to avoid casting magic at all during the game, more likely than any other RPG I've played.

However I don't count those as big flaws at all, it's not like game is that difficult even without relying on magic it's not like it's an SMT title lol.

The biggest flaw FF8 had was 4th disc, since when you get there, only thing you can do is collect a few GFs you've missed and finish the game, since everything else is closed off. You can't even do card quest anymore. (I mean sure you can access few members, but if you haven't completed the steps needed before, you're done.

@unikat: Well, wrong, the best thing you can do is set your magic to the Spirit stat (Spr) and you will be drawing 9 magics in no time

@Blackened_Halo: Well, wrong, Spirit stat is basically Magic Defense stat in most FF games where it appears, and it is so in FFVIII too. Magic is stat that your Draw command is connected to.

Final Fantasy VIII catches a lot of flack in it's legacy years. I loved it back in the day, especially the trick if you left your characters in yellow health and just switched through the characters repeatedly until their limit break engaged. I defeated that high level enemy island because of that trick haha.

Anyways, I enjoyed it, even if the story got pretty strange at times.

@clanpsi: Right, but I'm sure Square didn't foresee players abusing the system in that manner. The limit break wouldn't always appear immediately, you would have to spam the select button which went through the characters in your party until one engaged. In that sense it is a trick, it's leveraging the mechanics in an unforeseen way to gain an advantage.

@justthetip: That was a pretty standard way to cheese the game.

1) Have Squall and Zell in your party and a 3rd random party member.

2) Unjunction HP from Squall and Zell to have it drop to 3-digit numbers, then re-junction HP so that their current HP is considered low. If your max HP is 9999 with Junctions, that means that 2499 and below is considered "Critical".

3) Enter combat and just hit the "pass turn" button until Limit Break is enabled. Most of the times it would appear instantly or on 2nd try.

4) Use Limit Break and 1-shot everything that isn't a superboss.

Also, it's Iifa Tree (pronounced "Ee-fa"), not Lifa tree. The "instant death through Life" trick applies for all undead enemies, not just Soulcage (the boss at Iifa). Phoenix down would also get them down to 20 hp or less.

@justthetip: Pretty much every battle half way through the game was a flourish or one hit of limit breaks. In Final Fantasy IX, you can also one shot the Lifa Tree boss using life. I had leveled up for hours trying to get strong enough to beat it and still couldn't. Then my friend told me about that and when it worked, I was mad and happy at the same time.
