Fallout dev pitching Star Wars RPG

Obsidian CEO says idea for new game is "within the top three pitches we've ever come up with"; would be set between Episode III and Episode IV.

Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian Entertainment has its sights set on a galaxy far, far away. Speaking to Rock Paper Shotgun, CEO Feargus Urquhart said the studio has pitched LucasArts on a new Star Wars role-playing game.

No Caption Provided

"I would say it's within the top three pitches we've ever come up with," he said.

The game would be set between the events of the films Episode III and Episode IV. "We think that timeframe is super interesting. It's the fall of the Republic, the extermination of the Jedi; it's Obi-Wan going off and making sure Luke is OK. You have the Sith, but you have the extermination of all Force users except for very, very few," he said.

Urquhart said he pitched LucasArts on the idea prior to Disney's acquisition of the Star Wars brand in October. He noted that the transition "changes things," but that won't keep Obsidian from pushing the game with new owner Disney.

He said when Obsidian pitched the game to LucasArts, the studio received a positive call back later that very day. Since Disney's takeover of Star Wars, though, Obsidian has yet to speak with the House of Mouse about getting the project off the ground.

"We haven't [talked with Disney yet]. We're kind of waiting for the smoke to clear," he said. "But that's one of my next big things to do. To kind of go over there and [get the ball rolling again]."

If Disney does greenlight Obsidian's new Star Wars RPG, it will not be the first time the two companies have worked together. Obsidian spent a year making a Snow White prequel called Dwarves before changes at Disney led to the game's cancellation.

Obsidian is no stranger to the Star Wars brand. The studio developed the 2004 role-playing game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II--The Sith Lords, taking over the reins from original developer BioWare. The developer is currently working on South Park: The Stick of Truth and Project Eternity.

Why this? Why not KOTOR III?! As others have stated in the comments before me, there are already enough TV series, comic books, novels and games set in the same SW era as the movies... yet both of the Knights of the Old Republic games topped most of that because they were so unique. It was a completely different time period, the atmosphere was original and amazing, and it all felt like Star Wars - but soooo different from the movies.

@Bamul

Because LucasArts cancelled Kotor 3 which was being developed by Bioware back in 2008 or so. Then Drew Karpyshyn finished the storyline with the Revan novel, and now we have TOR to continue the storyline.

@Bamul Yea I loved KOTOR... but the prospect of a open world RPG as someone in the star wars universe is intriguing. But only If I can build and maintain my own ship if I choose to be a scoundrel.

At this point more has happened in between movies 3 and 4 than at all other times in the franchise. Give that time frame a rest for god sake.

I don't understand this. Why does everything has to be connected to the movie saga. There is so much you can work with in Star Wars universe. There is SO much. But noooo, everything has to be about the goddamn movie saga. Kotor and Kotor 2 were, not only in a Star Wars franchise, one of the best RPG games ever. Mostly because of the story, which was better than the one in the movies. I don't know about the rest of you guys but I am sick of watching/playing the same story over and over again when there is so much potential.

As long as it comes to consoles, I'd be perfectly fine with this! A proper KotOR III so to speak.

I'd still rather see KOTOR3. The problem with this pitch is that it takes place in a too familiar setting, which will limit what they can do storywise. I feel they'd have a lot more leeway working outside the films' timeline. And then it's also easier to avoid issues with what is or isn't canon. The KOTOR games made Star Wars feel new and interesting again, and it was the best analysis of the Force and Jedi/Sith religion that I've experienced.

I wish it was in any era other then around the movies, I'm so tired of that part of the time frame. It's been so completely beaten to death, and there's a massive amount of time both before and after that are open to new content.

Otherwise though, it could be a really good game. I like many of Obsidian's games, and KotOR 2 had a lot of potential.

@frenzy112 All obsidian games are rough gems

Kotor 2 was an improvement over 1 in all areas except story and the fact that it wasn't actually finished..

That could be really good, depending how they go about it. Personally, i'd like it if it had a Dark Forces type gameplay mixed w/ RPG.

I think anything made by Obsidian is worth a gander, and a Star Wars game made by Obsidian is worth at least 2 ganders. I have faith in them to really knock Stick of Truth out of the ballpark, and I imagine with their experience with KOTOR another SW game would be easy.

Obsidian has a knack for releasing glitchy and unfinished games, but that's typically due to them being rushed to release and budget cuts. They've got a real talent for taking gameplay that already exists and enhancing it with a deep and engaging storyline and lore. KOTOR and New Vegas were both amazing games hindered by their glitches and I always look forward to anything new that they're working on.

In the case of a new Star Wars game, however, I think I would rather get my KOTOR 3. As much as I dislike repetitive sequels, KOTOR has been absent for almost a decade and gameplay has evolved since Sith Lords was released. I would love to see a new Star Wars game running on a hybrid Mass Effect/Dragon Age engine. I don't want to see the combat become a hack-n-slash, but I would like to see them refine the combat system and add some new abilities. I would also like to see the Mass Effect dialog system introduced so we can enhance the personality of our character and their relationship with the squadmates.

dragon age and mass effect used 2 different engines mass effect used unreal Dragon age was aurora and is no longer used noways. The new dragon age will be on frostbite. I don't know were that leaves Obsidian seeing how EA/Bioware has nothing to do them. right now it might be up to them to use what ever game engine they can get there hands on or develop there own. be nice if they had RedEngine3 for it but don't think CD Projekt Red selling it to other developers.

I have mixed feelings about it as well I wonder what game engine will be used? and if it will be a KOTOR type game or more of a action RPG. Obsidian has released a lot of buggy games. hopefully they are given the right amount of time to get the thing finished properly

Bioware has not realesed anything I have liked in a long time I don't wan't then to touch, Star Wars tell I see a good game come out from EAware. there last attempt at star wars was a Abomination MMO. The next dragon age will be their chance to redeem me as a customer. I have not purchased a game from then since DAO I had the demo for DA2 and it just turned me away from them, glad I didn't preordered it

I have mixed feelings about Obsidian,I suppose. They tend to leave some games in a buggy, glitchy unfinished mess.I've noticed the most notorious of these being mentioned are Fallout New Vegas and KOTR 2.I read an article in PC Gamer recently, that KOTR 2 has been restored completely by fanmade patches and is now actually complete after all of these years.I'm aware that Fallout New Vegas required several patches to fix issues.I just wish Obsidian would take a little time to polish up their games more for the fans and public.

@SythisTaru Ya I loved KOTOR 2 and think if they had actually finished it, it prolly would have been better than the first one. But they had to meet a deadline so the game would be out by Christmas.

Am I the only one who thinks this title is misleading? Sure, they developed Fallout: New Vegas, but the Obsidian name is mostly tied to more traditional RPGs, like KOTOR2, Neverwinter Nights 2 and Dungeon Siege III. I think Fallout was out of their comfort zone (specifically, a sequel to Fallout 3, if they were making a new one from scratch, it'd probably be more like the old ones).

I also am a little apprehensive about setting it between episode III and IV. Sure, there's 20 years we don't know a whole lot about other than what we can infer from the movies, but there's practically no force users, a very strict empire that face virtually no opposition and the only logical final boss choices can't die, because they all die in Episode VI. At the same time, setting SWTFU between episode III and IV was one of the few things that worked for that game, so who knows.

@alexl86 Fallout wasn't out of their comfort zone. They were the original creators of the fallout universe. They (The same devs, working at a different company) made Fallout 1 and 2.

@alexl86 Who knows what stories they can come up with. I was just thinking now as I read your comment there could be stories that revolve around keeping Luke and Leia safe, like something happens that could expose their existence and that needs to be dealt with, perhaps by Obi Wan. Something like that though can't work with many of the main characters, at least not heavily.

Just an idea that popped into my head, but yeah I see your point. I guess the stories would have to be small, not grand scale, since as you said the Empire is powerful and the Jedi are so few and in hiding.

So the best idea they have come up with in a long time is a KOTOR equivalent set between episodes III and IV? Wow, big thinkers out there aren't there...

I like the idea of another Star Wars RPG though, been saying it ever since they never made KOTOR III. Someday they will figure out what we want.... someday.
