Fable 4 Was to Be "Darker and Grittier," Molyneux Says He'd Return to Franchise

"We wanted to hit the late Victorian proper far out Jules Verne sh*t."

Eurogamer today posted a fascinating, in-depth report on Lionhead Studios, the Microsoft-owned creator of the Fable franchise that recently closed down. In the feature are a number of interesting stories, including details on the pitch for Fable 4--which was ultimately rejected.

Lionhead's John McCormack came up with the pitch. His idea was to build an Unreal Engine 4-poweed game that pushed the series into the "technological, industrial age, with tram cars and flying machines."

"We wanted to hit the late Victorian proper far out Jules Verne sh**," McCormack said.

Fable 4's main city would have been massive--and dense--according to the report. It would have referenced British mythology, featuring characters like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, as well as Jack the Ripper.

The idea was to put these character into "this kind of weird f**ked up London environment".

"And that was going to be Fable 4, and it would be darker and grittier," McCormack said. "And because it was R-rated it would have the prostitutes and the humor. I was like, 'Man, this is going to be f**king brilliant, and everybody was really into it."

Microsoft ultimately rejected the pitch, according to the report, instead putting the Lionhead team to work on what would become the free-to-play Fable Legends.

The Fable games were described in the report as "highly profitable," but not in a way similar to Microsoft's other top franchises, including Halo. As such, there was a "certain amount of tension" that existed in the lead-up to Lionhead's pitch for Fable 4, said another former employee, Simon Carter.

McCormack was reportedly "incensed" by Microsoft's decision to reject the Fable 4 pitch, citing it as one of the reasons he quit Lionhead in 2012.

"It was like, 'You've reached your cap of players for RPG on Xbox and you need to find a way to double that, and you're not going to do it with RPG," he says. "I thought, 'Yes we can.'

"I said, 'Look, just give us four years, proper finance, give us the chance Mass Effect has, Skyrim has, the games at the time. They're getting four years and a lot of budget. Give us that, and we'll give you something that'll get you your players."

According to McCormack, Microsoft said something like, "'Nah, you've had three shots and you've only tripled the money. It's not good enough. F**k off.' That's what I was annoyed about."

Lionhead would go on to make Legends, which never made it out of beta before it was eventually cancelled. One source told Eurogamer that Microsoft spent $75 million on Legends before its cancellation.

Also in the feature, Fable designer Peter Molyneux, who left Lionhead in 2012, said he would be open to the idea of working on a new Fable game.

"When I finish what I'm working on now, if someone comes to me and asks, 'Hey, do you want to do Fable 4?', I'd totally be up for it," he said. "It's such a rich world and there are so many avenues we didn't explore. That would be really good fun to do. And I'd still want the equivalent of another dog."

You can read the full Eurogamer story here.

Yesterday, a report emerged that claimed Microsoft rejected multiple offers to sell the Fable franchise, including bids from "some of the biggest names in video game publishing."

The new Eurogamer report mentions that some at Lionhead attempted to keep Legends afloat through what they called "Project Phoenix." The idea was to finish the game and continue working on it as a new studio that had a licensing deal with Microsoft for the Fable IP. This would have saved "quite a few jobs," one source said, and it could have ended up making Fable more profitable, apparently.

Two Chinese companies reportedly came forward to express interest in funding a new studio, but a deal was never reached. Microsoft was reportedly "supportive" of the idea, but the clock ran out. UK law requires employers to create a consultancy period of at least 30 days.

Microsoft has not yet announced its plans for Fable in what is now a post-Lionhead era at Microsoft. We will bring you more news as it becomes available.

Makes me sad to think maybe this whole situation could have been avoided if Phil had taken lead a few years sooner. RIP a could've been really cool Fable 4.

This is yet another example of how terrible things were when Mattrick ran the brand. I bet that Fable 4 would have been an incredible game, instead Lionhead was put on a path that had no chance for success.

Pretty sad that we're still feeling the negative effects of Don Mattricks reign as Xbox President.

@suicidesn0wman:

Don Mattrick is also the reason why the Xbox First Party did not develop more. Xbox is now just trying to develop their first party. Its ashame....

Lionhead members should just join Playstation like most of the Xbox fans have and make a new game that's like Fable.

@txuzai: and penalise all the fans that actually stuck with them instead of jumping ship?

@planetgloom: People jumped ship because the Xbox 1 kind of sucks.. that's not the developers fault. I say this as an Xbox 1 owner... PS4 is clearly the better console unless you love love LOOOOVE MS's few exclusives. Brand loyalty doesn't make sense when that brand takes a crashing nose dive...

@nl_skipper: it really doesn't suck though. About the only thing I prefer in my ps4 over the one is its graphics card and even then I can barely tell the difference. The point still stands though that going exclusive to Sony would be a monumentaly shitty thing to do for the lionhead faithful that actually stuck by them this generation. Fable and Halo were the reasons I chose the Xbox one as my first console of this gen. By all means go multiplatform but there's no need for them to be dicks to the majority of their fans by going exclusive to the other side, regardless of how poorly Microsoft have treated them (which they have).

They need to ditch the guns and steampunk stuff, and go back to the classic medieval era. Bows, swords, armor, castles, etc. Do a prequel in the Old Kingdom.

They should have just made a Fable 4 and not messed around making a failed Fable Legends game. Waste really. One less Microsoft Exclusive now..

I guess Lionhead didn't have "creative" freedom after all.

Man that Fable 4 description sounded neat.

@blessedbyhorus: But it never even had to be this way at all. Fable 1 was a great game on its own, and it had a great artstyle, charm, and atmosphere. It was also just a fun RPG and, with a sequel, they could have simply fleshed out the RPG mechanics, crafted a story with more cause and effect based on your choices, and kept the same charming time period as Fable with a little more environmental variety and a much larger world. We didn’t want guns or the industrial age, we didn’t want a less charming art style we just wanted a better Fable 1. Instead, Fable 2 stripped away the armor system and simplified the combat, made the art style more grey and boring, and gave us a very weak story. Couple that with the lack of a large world, and you have a far less interesting game in my opinion. 3 made the franchise even less recognizable, though, and 4 might as well just be a new IP. Fable never should have had a problem with sequels, but I feel like they lost more and more charm with each new entry.

@ayanda49: Some people dont realize how HUGE of a game this was supposed to be BEFORE it was actually released. All the promises we got and were never realized. I do agree, as a fan of the first Fable, they screwed with us quite a bit. Despite paying the full 49.99 at launch they still released the Lost Chapters or whatever for 29.99 about a year after the game came out.....all before DLC was a thing. You HAD to but a full game disc all over again. Then they gave us the steampunk era wjich should have been the setting for a part 4. The roller coaster that was Fable.

I cant blame MSoft for being worried about putting more money into the franchise. For all intents it really was only going to sell the the mega fans of the series (Myself included) as the people who crave the story more than we care about playing a crappy game. That said, its annoying that they want to hold onto the IP rather than sell it to someone who may try to continue funding the next game.

Dont get me wrong, MSoft did a dick move, but from a business risk perspective I can see why they did it.

@validifyed: I just assumed that because MS has so little exclusive titles, the last thing they need is for another company to have an advantage.

Sounds right. Profitable but not absurdly over-profitable. Why give the fans something they'd enjoy and not put us at a loss when we can gamble on the FTP trend.
