Fable 4 Was to Be "Darker and Grittier," Molyneux Says He'd Return to Franchise

"We wanted to hit the late Victorian proper far out Jules Verne sh*t."

Eurogamer today posted a fascinating, in-depth report on Lionhead Studios, the Microsoft-owned creator of the Fable franchise that recently closed down. In the feature are a number of interesting stories, including details on the pitch for Fable 4--which was ultimately rejected.

No Caption Provided

Lionhead's John McCormack came up with the pitch. His idea was to build an Unreal Engine 4-poweed game that pushed the series into the "technological, industrial age, with tram cars and flying machines."

"We wanted to hit the late Victorian proper far out Jules Verne sh**," McCormack said.

Fable 4's main city would have been massive--and dense--according to the report. It would have referenced British mythology, featuring characters like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, as well as Jack the Ripper.

The idea was to put these character into "this kind of weird f**ked up London environment".

"And that was going to be Fable 4, and it would be darker and grittier," McCormack said. "And because it was R-rated it would have the prostitutes and the humor. I was like, 'Man, this is going to be f**king brilliant, and everybody was really into it."

Microsoft ultimately rejected the pitch, according to the report, instead putting the Lionhead team to work on what would become the free-to-play Fable Legends.

The Fable games were described in the report as "highly profitable," but not in a way similar to Microsoft's other top franchises, including Halo. As such, there was a "certain amount of tension" that existed in the lead-up to Lionhead's pitch for Fable 4, said another former employee, Simon Carter.

McCormack was reportedly "incensed" by Microsoft's decision to reject the Fable 4 pitch, citing it as one of the reasons he quit Lionhead in 2012.

"It was like, 'You've reached your cap of players for RPG on Xbox and you need to find a way to double that, and you're not going to do it with RPG," he says. "I thought, 'Yes we can.'

"I said, 'Look, just give us four years, proper finance, give us the chance Mass Effect has, Skyrim has, the games at the time. They're getting four years and a lot of budget. Give us that, and we'll give you something that'll get you your players."

According to McCormack, Microsoft said something like, "'Nah, you've had three shots and you've only tripled the money. It's not good enough. F**k off.' That's what I was annoyed about."

Lionhead would go on to make Legends, which never made it out of beta before it was eventually cancelled. One source told Eurogamer that Microsoft spent $75 million on Legends before its cancellation.

Also in the feature, Fable designer Peter Molyneux, who left Lionhead in 2012, said he would be open to the idea of working on a new Fable game.

"When I finish what I'm working on now, if someone comes to me and asks, 'Hey, do you want to do Fable 4?', I'd totally be up for it," he said. "It's such a rich world and there are so many avenues we didn't explore. That would be really good fun to do. And I'd still want the equivalent of another dog."

You can read the full Eurogamer story here.

Yesterday, a report emerged that claimed Microsoft rejected multiple offers to sell the Fable franchise, including bids from "some of the biggest names in video game publishing."

The new Eurogamer report mentions that some at Lionhead attempted to keep Legends afloat through what they called "Project Phoenix." The idea was to finish the game and continue working on it as a new studio that had a licensing deal with Microsoft for the Fable IP. This would have saved "quite a few jobs," one source said, and it could have ended up making Fable more profitable, apparently.

Two Chinese companies reportedly came forward to express interest in funding a new studio, but a deal was never reached. Microsoft was reportedly "supportive" of the idea, but the clock ran out. UK law requires employers to create a consultancy period of at least 30 days.

Microsoft has not yet announced its plans for Fable in what is now a post-Lionhead era at Microsoft. We will bring you more news as it becomes available.

After Fable 1, I felt the game lost its way. Stop going forward in time with all this industrial age garbage. I just want the old atmosphere and awesomeness 1 had. Just make Fable: The Old Kingdom! the lore behind that is much more interesting.

@bluenessless: Yes! Agreed. To me Fable as a series was best played anytime preindustrial era. The name itself "Fable" evokes a setting far back in time. What better time than the Old Kingdom? Might even meet the Archmage who ended it all, or even play as him/her.

@Mr357Magnum: I don't mind playing as the Archon or a loyal subject of his either. They should have stuck with the fantasy medieval setting the whole way.

Microsoft just went full retard by closing down Lionhead. I'd rather play Fable than Halo. Halo is just boring as hell.

@darklordvyperx: While I am with you on genres, I simply don't understand the lure of shooters, we are in the minority....shooters sell like crazy....which doesn't mean MS shouldn't follow both paths, they certainly don't lack for funds to do so, but, even for the general theme of Fable (which I love) Lionhead was tier 2....I am fine with them moving Fable to another dev team....unfortuante it might take another 4 years to get another Fable.

While I hate to see any decent RPG franchise thrown aside just because it wasn't SUPER profitable rather than just profitable, which is an attitude that's ruining the industry (that's why everything is becoming CoD like), these guys really weren't doing the Fable name justice. Hopefully MS gives the IP to someone who can.

@Barighm:

I would not call Fable a decent RPG franchise it was a casual "RPG for Dummies" that could be beat in 6-8 hours by just mashing X button, for people who want casual sex and fart jokes instead of a story.

@excelsiorauctor: It was absolutely a decent RPG...and it was an entry level RPG. Could you beat the campaigns quickly? If you were so inclined. The beauty of an actual RPG is there other ways to interact with the world; there are dynamic parts that don't force it down a linear path. Speed record for beating Dark Souls 1 is under 26 minutes...think before you post.

So MS went against the passions of the development team, forced them to entirely change the Fable brand, and tried to create a sub-genre (asynchonous MP) of game that has very few successful examples. Then proceeded to spend nearly as much money and time on that project, before shit canning it and getting nothing for their efforts, resulting in massive layoffs and lost talent.. bravo MS, bravo!

All seemingly because of unrealistic levels of greed, what a shame :(. Fable 3 had the most sales of them all (indicating the brand was still growing) despite being a mis-step by most accounts, so I donno why MS was so skeptical of a 4th... they don't even have any other RPG brands do they...? It's just Forza, Gears and Halo as far as I know...

GS is watching Phils tweets nonstop in case someone is asking "Phil, what will happen with the Fable franchise?" lol
I dont want to trash Peter that much but what he has are ideas which he never think 100% through and implement it halfbaked into the game.
I would welcome a darker Fable.

Anyone remember the fight in the caves in Fable 3..after landing at the coast of Aurora?
One of rare great phases in the game

edit-i just read the interview and i am really surprised that they made even one Fable working lol ...with all that chaos and pressure in last months,it could have easily all end in a catastrophy every time they released a Fable game

I would've loved to see that pitch realized, it sounds like it could've been VERY cool.

It was kind of heart-wrenching to read how someone creative was treated so coldly by the gray executives, who instead forced the brave vision to be rejected for a cowardly small scale muck that never even saw the light of day.

The game that could've made Lionhead's existence justifiable to MicroSoft was in that original pitch.

Sounds bad, I'm glad someone realized Molyneux and friends were full of it and shut them down right away.

But then Microsoft proceeded to run the series into the ground, so there's that.

this is what happens when you're bound to a big company, sometimes making small games might cover the expences in the end, but if it's not up to the owner's liking then it'll be rejected eitherway sad thing

That's probably all he had: a scribbled note on a napkin that said "fable 4 in the future with flying cars and stuff!" This dude is a freaking joke and a cancer on the industry. Glad he's gone.

Wish the studio had stayed alive, everyone kept their jobs and it was only him leaving.

@Servare: Hehehehe, he probably did just scribble that idea on a napkin yeah, but I think you're being a bit harsh and he's not that bad though, "a freaking joke" he may be but cancer on the industry? People stopped taking him seriously ages ago so he's had pretty much fuckall effect on the industry since after Fable 2.

Such a sad state of affairs though, this guy once created and pioneered a whole genre with amazing games like Populous and Dungeon Keeper, now he's just... ugh. I still love the guy (as his games defined a large part of my childhood) but he really dun goofed ultimately.

This sounds like scapegoating to me.

Seriously they were asked multiple times if they had any plans for fable 4 for many many years and they always said no and then later on they announced fable legends to which no one was really excited. I would have loved me some Fable 4 but this sounds like hes just venting his frustrations a bit.

I love Molyneux's enthusiasm and his vision, but when it comes to executing his ideas he falls way short of the mark. Ever Fable game was to be some great new technical masterpiece but just fell short of mediocre.

I hope they don't give the series back to Molyneux. Fable 1 is the only game that, to me, feels like Fable. I loved been part of the Guild, going on quests, and just everything about that game. 2 and 3 where both steps in the wrong direction. I hated seeing this fun fantasy world turn into a rather generic Medieval Britain.

Honestly, as bad as the whole F2P, semi-Moba idea that was Legends is, I kinda like aspects of it far more than 2 or 3, because it brought back some of the feelings of the original. Been part of a group and just going on quests, it was almost what I wanted from Fable... almost.

Honestly, I think Phil needs to get on the phone with Big Huge Games and 38 Studios. Kingdoms of Amalur was a much better Fable game than 2 or 3 ever was, and I think they'd be the perfect people to take over the series. Just make Kingdoms and add some British humor, and we'll be good.

Fable 4 set in technological, industrial age, with tram cars and flying machines. You can choose to hold Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde by the hand. (Your dog dies at the end anyway)

Fable 5 set in WW2 - you can choose to hold Hitler or Stalin by the hand. (Your dog dies at the end anyway)

Fable 6: Modern Fableware - you can choose to hold Trump or Putin by the hand. (Your dog dies at the end anyway)

Fable 7: Guardians - you can choose to hold Master Chief or Cortana by the hand. (Your dog-bot dies at the end anyway)

The Fable series started off well, but each installment got progressively worse and ended with the turd that is Fable 3. As such, it's not surprising that Microsoft did not want to risk seeing another dismal failure again and pulled the plug from the single player series.
