EA regrets initially soft Wii support

CEO John Riccitiello says company "bet on the wrong horse a little bit" by focusing next-gen development on Xbox 360 and PS3.

When the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 launched in November 2005 and November 2006, respectively, Electronic Arts was there with a full slate of games. Each system received the latest iterations from the publisher's Need for Speed, Madden NFL, NBA Live, and Tiger Woods PGA Tour franchises. The Xbox 360 also welcomed FIFA 06: Road to FIFA World Cup, while Fight Night Round 3 arrived on the PS3 just weeks after the console's launch.

By contrast, only two EA games made it to the Wii's launch: Need for Speed Carbon and Madden NFL 07. Though he wasn't yet appointed to his current post as EA's CEO, that's something John Riccitiello regrets, as he explained at the company's annual meeting of stockholders yesterday.

Taking questions from the audience, Riccitiello was asked about several years of less-than-stellar performance on the stock market. He responded first by saying that the company is aligned behind the goal of driving shareholder value, but acknowledged that the company could have better handled the recent transition between console generations.

"[This transition has been] harder because of the complexity," Riccitiello said, "and harder because unfortunately, we bet a little bit on the wrong horse in focusing so much on the PS3 and Xbox 360, and to a lesser degree on the Wii. And let me assure you that almost all of us in the industry made the same judgment. So after so many transitions of guessing exactly right, we got this one a little bit wrong and we're dealing with that now with strong investments on the Wii."

One of those investments--a studio dedicated to developing specifically for the Wii--was announced roughly a week after Nintendo's system launched.

Later in the session, Riccitiello touched on the Wii launch again when asked about which of the company's competitors keep it up at night.

"We're all fairly paranoid, so a lot of them keep us up at night for different things," Riccitiello replied. "There aren't companies that are really directly comparable in all areas. But if you're looking for companies that we admire and might well keep us up at night, I think about companies like Ubisoft, that made a quicker and more forceful move against the Wii and Nintendo DS, and that's showing in their results. [They're] insightful, and they create an awfully large number of great titles. No question, there's a lot to admire there."

Riccitiello also specified China-based The9 and Korea's Neowiz, saying the companies are doing online gaming better. In recent years, EA has purchased a 20 percent ownership stake in Ubisoft, roughly 15 percent in The9, and 19 percent of Neowiz. However, he did not restrict his comments to EA's partially owned ventures. He also addressed All-Pro Football 2K8 maker Take-Two Interactive and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater publisher Activision.

"When you've got a competitor like Take-Two on the sports side and they launch a football title using some of the industry legends, you want to make sure that ends up being a blip and is not repeatable, because we like to defend our franchises aggressively," Riccitiello said. "With Activision you worry about Guitar Hero against Rock Band, or Call of Duty against Medal of Honor."

These companies need to stop apologizing and start making quality Wii games.

Kyle: You don't make a profit in the video game industry by pleasing around 15 men and women who sit around a table once a week and do basically nothing, you make a profit by creating games that please the consumer. By creating/supporting/publishing the game that pleases the consumer, the consumer buys it, creating the profit that pleases the shareholders. If anything, pleasing the shareholders is the end result, not the initial reason.

tycoonmike, it's more about pleasing the shareholders considering they own a fraction of the company. they don't want to see their company's value decrease.

Volcano: Do you honestly think that EA should care about pleasing the consumer? Any company, be they large or small, can only worry about one thing, making a profit. Like it or not, EA has been making a profit, therefore they have been making/publishing/supporting games that please the consumer. If EA wasn't doing so, they wouldn't be making profit. In making a profit, they have pleased the consumer. So all you people saying that EA is only making crap, the simple fact that they are making a profit proves otherwise.

"MrSickVisionz : Most companies don't do things if they don't think it will be profitable. Thats a good rule for not going bankrupt." No kidding? That is news to me. It might be a "good rule" for not going backrupt but it is not a good rule for making innovative games. The fact is, when you are EA's size, all they see is green. When you are a small developer you take risks to get noticed and, yes, you risk going bankrupt. But it is not like EA can't stand to lose some money and compete with other products that will, in turn, drive their creative development. I cannot believe I just used "EA" and "creative" in the same sentence.

I'm starting to like EA again, actually, especially after playing NCAA 08. Madden 08 should return to championship form and a few EA games on the horizon look great. I like 'em.

Oh, and to boot...now that they realize their "mistake", what are they giving us on Wii? Boogie? A puzzle game by Steven Speilberg? And meanwhile, Nintendo is giving us Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, Super Smash Bros. Brawl...and EA can't put one piece of their company into making something more than a fuzzy and friendly dancing game? BAH!

To all you saying EA doesn't make/publish/support great games, I can think of a few: The entire The Sims series The entire SimCity series The entire Need for Speed series 007: Everything or Nothing The majority of the Command & Conquer series Almost all of the games listed above received greater than 7.0 on this website.

This guy is serious about owning everything and destroying the competition. Hell they own their competition literally. Who else buys stock in their opponnents that they can't crush. These guys are a little scarry. Maybe oneday all games will be EA. (At this moment I am happy for 1st party development.)

Lie...cheat...steal... That's what it says on huge banners everywhere inside of EA's studios...because that's all they ever do: something that someone else has already done. The problem is...I like a lot of their games, and they have BF2 and Tiger Woods, which are pretty original given the lack of competition in those types of games (the massive online battles with BF2 and the fact that a golf game sells well...and please, don't use Joint Ops or Delta Force against BF2...show some respect!!!).

'He responded first by saying that the company is aligned behind the goal of driving shareholder value' You have to realize that any publicly trade game developer has the creating value for shareholders as a higher priority than developing quality, innovative games. In an ideal situation, a game developer would implement a strategy that maximized shareholder value through developing better quality games. Unfortunately for us, EA has been successful in maximizing shareholder value and stock growth by re-hashing the same titles year after year, and shoving ads into games. This creates a more perpetual stream of cash inflow for the company, but really at the expense of the gamers who want better quality, innovative games.

The last EA game I found fun and entertaining was way back with SSX Tricky. Granted, I haven't played Blur or Madden on the Wii, but if EA can bring a quality game like that to the Wii (I'll believe it when I see it), then more power to 'em. Otherwise its more crap from them as usual. I hope better developers follow suit, though.

Aww.. poor EA, they regret that they did not get in on the Wii early bird cash cow. Well, what exactly is new about that? EA never does anything unless they think they will make a load of cash off if it. They spend the millions to get licenses to lock out competition but they won't spend a dime to actually take a risk. Heck, they hardly reinvest their money on existing game improvements. No sir, it is all about the advertisement and the exclusive deals.

Yay, more Wii support from EA. I'm not sure whether to be happy or sad. =) I guess the basic mistake they made was assuming that because men like to brag about watching the game on their big screen HDTVs meant they all own one.

EA are incapabale of making great games, at least nowadays. They made some fantastic games for the likes of the SNES and the Mega Drive/Genesis (the likes of FIFA and Road Rash in those days were actually quite good) but these days they just churn out games and know they're going to sell (they pretty much have most major sports licences, and games are going to sell on the back of that) so they don't make an effort to iron out all the wrinkles before the games go on sale. The only decent games (that I've played) that EA have made recently are racing games. Technically you can't count The Sims as an EA game as Will Wright was the founder of Maxis, and they had come up with the idea before EA did their usual ''oh, they look succesful, lets buy 'em out!" routine.

I think EA were doing what EA do best: basing all developments on the previous console. Example: EA lost a lot on the Saturn, so they said not to the Dreamcast. GC and N64 weren't good for EA so.... my point is proven!

This iteration of the consol wars is so different from the previous one that it's not surprising some of the game makers are kicking themselves for previous decisions. In the past, all the consoles were relatively the same except for differences in power. This time the PS3 and 360 are slugging it out on the power front as usual. But, Nintendo threw a real wrench into the system when they came up with the Wii. It's so completely different than the other two that you can't think the same way when developing games. This is also one of the reasons that it isn't as easy to cross all platforms with a game. I would have liked to see a little more graphical power in the Wii, but there is no denying that it has shaken up the industry. And that shaking was looooong overdue.
