Dead Space 3 developer defends PC port

The PC version of Dead Space 3 will see improvements over the console versions, but Visceral Games isn't trying to create "disparity" between platforms.

Dead Space 3 executive producer Steve Papoutsis has spoken out to clarify earlier reports that Isaac Clarke's upcoming monster-tinged adventure would see a bare-bones PC port.

When asked why Dead Space 3 wouldn't see a PC-optimised version by Shacknews, Papoutsis replied by saying the platform is "by no means any less important to us; it gets a lot of attention. The PC is a very different platform. As developers, you want to deliver an experience that's as similar as possible on different platforms."

Visceral Games continues "to evolve our games as we develop them," added Papoutsis, "but we certainly don't target PC as something that's going to be significantly different. We aren't trying to create disparity in the experience that our gamers enjoy; we want to make sure everyone's having that same experience."

A powerful PC will see benefits over the console version, then, but Visceral Games isn't going out of its way to develop exclusive benefits like DICE did with the PC version of Battlefield 3. "The biggest thing is we want to make sure the quality of the experience is consistent across all platforms so we don't have one userbase saying it's better on their system," said Papoutsis. "We want it to be great on all systems, that's our approach."

Dead Space 3--complete with co-op, microtransactions, and N7 armour--will be released for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 on February 5 in North America and February 8 in Europe.

I just hope it's still a horror game. The first 2 Dead Space games were true successors to the Resident Evil games. 3rd person horror with controls that actually functioned. But from what I've seen it's turned into a gears of war clone, and that makes me sad.

On the actual article, I don't really care that much. I mean I can see why they'd chose this route. I'm a little bummed, but Dead Space isn't really known as a PC centric franchise, so I don't really care that much.

@Tremblay343 The horror elements of the game have been toned down greatly. At least that's what i hear from people already playing the game.

@gamingnerd121 @Tremblay343

it was hinted at last E3's public presentation that DS3 is taking an action deviation, you could tell by the dialogues, the plentiful on-screen action and the *gasp* side-rolling.

it is my belief that if visceral wanted, they would have made a third horror shooter but it must have been EA that ordered the change. visceral had a nice, happy fanbase and needed not change the formula.

I really don't get this article, most games aren't optimized for the pc as it's a lot more time and money they have to spend. Saying it's because they want a consistent experience for all so console owners don't feel sad is just silly though.

No problem, not in any hurry to get it and will get it in the Steam sales eventually. So stupid to hear these devs go out of there way to say pretty much, "**** PC gamers." No thanks.

In other words, they're not going to bother with higher resolution textures.

Fine. If they don't want my money, I save $50, and honestly, I have plenty of games to play as it is. It's not like anyone was touting DS3 as any sort of must-play game in any case, and I haven't even played Dishonored or Far Cry 3 yet.

Even money they know it's just going to be downloaded like the sucker is shareware so why bother to sink more money into it? and the justification the good honest people who pay for it outweigh the cost of the upgrade doesn't cut the mustard or they would improve it. It's not art. It's money. The art is maximizing the most in profits with the least amount of effort, which still happens to cost millions, and EA knows how to make art.

Who cares. DS3 is a Gears of War game set in the DS universe. It's shit. Nothing scary about it anymore.

i dont see the issue. Make it equal on all platforms. No platform is more special than another. PC elitist need to stop crying. We all get the same. Fair.

@debryson there is nothing elitist about wanting higher resolution textures or tessellation when the hardware is more than capable of using it. You start by creating assets and then scale it down to fit each platform, not very complicated. Do you honestly think that the textures you see on your console are the source material? No, they are scaled down , compressed and then put into the game. Same goes for every item with polygons in them. There is a certain budget for consoles that PCs simply don't care about.

Try not to be such a fanboy. I've owned PCs and consoles myself.

Translation- We don't want to put any more effort or spend any more money then we've already done. It's more money for us that way.
