Dead Space 3 developer defends PC port

The PC version of Dead Space 3 will see improvements over the console versions, but Visceral Games isn't trying to create "disparity" between platforms.

Dead Space 3 executive producer Steve Papoutsis has spoken out to clarify earlier reports that Isaac Clarke's upcoming monster-tinged adventure would see a bare-bones PC port.

No Caption Provided

When asked why Dead Space 3 wouldn't see a PC-optimised version by Shacknews, Papoutsis replied by saying the platform is "by no means any less important to us; it gets a lot of attention. The PC is a very different platform. As developers, you want to deliver an experience that's as similar as possible on different platforms."

Visceral Games continues "to evolve our games as we develop them," added Papoutsis, "but we certainly don't target PC as something that's going to be significantly different. We aren't trying to create disparity in the experience that our gamers enjoy; we want to make sure everyone's having that same experience."

A powerful PC will see benefits over the console version, then, but Visceral Games isn't going out of its way to develop exclusive benefits like DICE did with the PC version of Battlefield 3. "The biggest thing is we want to make sure the quality of the experience is consistent across all platforms so we don't have one userbase saying it's better on their system," said Papoutsis. "We want it to be great on all systems, that's our approach."

Dead Space 3--complete with co-op, microtransactions, and N7 armour--will be released for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 on February 5 in North America and February 8 in Europe.

I paid over £1500 for my PC, to have a better gaming experience. And now EA dont want to give PC gaming much benefit in visuals over Xbox 360 or PS3?! Im calling bullsh*t, they just cant be arsed. They care less and less about the gaming community each game they painfully sh*t out.

Speaking just about the difference among platforms since this game is garbage and it's rating confirms it, PC really has more potential anyway...It does no good to whine about it at this point.

"We aren't trying to create disparity in the experience that our gamers enjoy...". What crap. They should optimize and make the game the best it can be on all platforms.

If that means refined controls, higher res textures, support for more screen resolutions and advanced processing effects for the PC platform, then implement it! Or make it a budget £19.99 purchase for PC owners.

This is why games like Borderlands 2 and DmC get my money, because I can see they've put some effort in to making a proper PC version. A sloppily ported Xbox verion does not.

So by this guys logic if they ever make a game for the 3DS and then release it on the PS3 it will still look the same because they want the experience to be as similar as possible between platforms?!

Well FINE! But don't charge full price for it then. Low effort = low price.

Why are you trying to bullshit it when it's obvious you're not making the port any better cuz,

A) You're lazy

B) Not enough time

C) Not enough funding

Sure, the PC version of Dead Space 1 and 2 were pretty bleh already but they still allowed to you play around with graphics settings, not really getting into the big stuff but the common features were there, this isn't like Dark Souls where the developers didn't know wtf they were doing and had very little time to put the port together, this is a developer that's had plenty of games on PC.

So the experience is there, give me a break.

That is terrible to hear. I loved DS1 and DS2 on PC but i can't give money over to a company that treats the best platform as second rate. That's akin to saying here is a 1080p tv but we have limited it to 480p because we don't want our phone to suffer in comparison. Wow. That is pure laziness and confirms i will not be giving them 1c for DS3.

My opinion is that we, as PC enthusiasts, put a lot of effort, not to mention money, into our machines so that they CAN perform better than current-gen consoles. I feel that we deserve the extra bells and whistles of graphics customization and more interface options. Developers who overlook the PC community are turning their backs on many of the most diehard gamers out there. I've been playing games on PC since Wolfenstein 3D first released. Sure, I own a PS3 (I pretty much bought it just to play MGS4), but my desktop is where you will almost always find me gaming. Shame on you Visceral.

All I get out of this is that they are lazy. The PC is by nature a better platform, so if the game can take advantage of that why wouldn't it? That philosophy is a bunch of crap as far as I'm concerned.

@billlabowski It could be for many people that it is enjoyable because it hasn't changed that much between games. I for one like knowing that the game is going to be solid like the other ones, but that's just my opinion. I respect yours, and see your point on the issue!

Over the years I expected PC versions of games to be better since you can put a lot of really good hardware in a PC. Seems stupid not to utilize the superior hardware of the PC if it's there. If they use the same engine it will be able to make use of better graphics than the consoles.

If dead space 3 does well and the DLC, coop doesn't take all of the horror suspense outta of what makes DS IP special then a PC-optimised version will probably follow. I know it costs a ton to optimize and you have to have the people with talent and skills in that area available, but I think it would at least make its money back.

@Ijustbeatya Err, no. Pirating a game doesn't mean you don't like what they're doing -- it means you like what they're doing but just don't want to pay for it.

If you want to make a point, don't play it at all.

@nu1mlock I dont like piracy either its destroying pc gaming, But like i said i would only do it to piss off the developers, I was really looking forward to this game since i 1st heard about it and now with only a few days to go they announce this bs ! It has really angered me, For years now these developers make their games aimed at xbox an ps3 which us pretty old tech these days compared to pc, An then they port a half arsed buggy game to the pc an expect us to pay full price, Its not even a joke as it isnt the least bit funny, Its like a slap on the face to the pc community, Pc gamers are serious gamers thats why we all spend more than just a couple of hundred pounds on a crappy console b cos we want the best gaming exp possible not a slightly better than a console game, They need to start developing game for pc then porting them to consoles, Hopefully with the next gen consoles coming out pc games will look even more stunning, Fingers crossed.

@Ijustbeatya That doesn't change the fact that if you want to make a point and make sure the developers will know that you don't tolerate these things, your only choice of making that point is by not playing it at all.

It doesn't matter how many games you've bought previously, if you pirate this game it'll still how in the statistics that you enjoy the game but won't pay.

I'm not saying you shouldn't download the game first to try it out, especially with no PC demo (although I don't condone piracy), I'm just saying -- if it's worth playing, it's worth buying.

@nu1mlock Not it doesnt, I just wanna piss off the developers, I can easily afford the game, I buy almost every good game that gets released sometimes even buy 3 copies for xbox ps3 and pc, So onfact it has nothing to do with money, I just meant i u wanna finish the story download it so we dont actually put money in these guys pockets, b cos if they still make a lot of money from us pc gamers then things like this could become more common place an that is the last thing i would want, I have spent a lot more on my setup than the average gamer b cos i want the best graphics and immersion out of the games i buy, In fact i have spent close to £2000 in games in last 2 years so like i said it has nothing to do with money.

"but we certainly don't target PC as something that's going to be significantly different. We aren't trying to create disparity in the experience that our gamers enjoy; we want to make sure everyone's having that same experience."

PC's are significantly different, and the fact that promotional material for Dead Space 3 is done on High powered PC's, shows that the developers should understand this. A £1500 gaming rig designed that the person sits very close too is significantly different from a £200 console that is designed to be on a tv and for the individual to sit 6-10 feet away from. When you are spending over 5 times the amount that a gaming console costs, you do expect a little effort to be put into the port, an FoV slider at the very least, personally I find alot of ports unplayable because of lack of FoV sliders because of the motion sickness.

Comments like this, suggesting laziness from a developer would make me question the overall commitment to making a great game, ( a survival horror game with a shop you can buy everything you need from - even if optional has no place being in a survival game, cash grab) .

I await the Angry Joe review on this one before they recive any of my hard earned cash...I wish I could charge my employer micro transactions for extra tasks I do.

Technically theyre not dumbing down anything. It just sounds like theyre not interested in the power that is available these days, since their largest market uses old as shit hardware.

They arent bothering to make the best game they can basically, they set the bar lower than they should have. Which when it comes to graphics isnt the end of the world, but it does seem lazy.
