Coin-OpEd: What's in a launch lineup?

The 3DS launched this week, and I haven't the foggiest why you people bought it. Seriously, what's in this launch lineup?

Hey everyone,

How's it going? How's your mom? I hope she's well. Anyway, I saw a bunch of you picked up Nintendo's new 3DS over the weekend. Here's what Nintendo said: "US day-one sales numbers for Nintendo 3DS were the highest of any Nintendo handheld system in our history." That's bigger than the DS and Game Boy Advance, which have gone on to sell a respective 144 million and 81.5 million systems through 2010.

Hey, so I'm trying to figure this out, because right now, from my perspective, all of you who bought this system, that decision you made is tantamount to bringing a jet ski to Antarctica. Sure it's pretty. Sure it's fast. But Holy Jesus, the water's frigid.

Here's how GameSpot saw it:: 8.5, 8.0, 7.5, 7.5, 7.5, 7.0, 6.5, 6.0, 5.5, 5.5, 5.0, 5.0, 4.5. By my calculations, that's a median of 6.5 and a mean of 6.461538. (See, I can do math. What now, Ms. Williams?!) Taking that value, we're left with the equation: $250 + tax / 6.5 = X, where X is the approximate sum of Poor Decisions. OK, review scores can't be the reason why you all bought this thing.

Why are you here? Where are you going?
Why are you here? Where are you going?

Maybe its less the scores and more the franchises that you all were drawn to. The top-scoring 3DS launch title was Capcom's Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition. Now, far be it from me to demean SSFIV:3DE by calling it an inferior port of an otherwise exceptional fighter, but who are we kidding: Until you can plug a Tournament Edition FightStick into the 3DS, it's kind of an inferior port of an otherwise exceptional fighter. Over-the-shoulder camera-view? No thanks.

Nothing says Age of 3D like a top-down turn-based tactics game, so with unbridled enthusiasm may I present Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars. Shadow Wars earned the honors of top-rated original title on the 3DS, and to Ubisoft's credit, it's a well-crafted, entirely worthwhile game (even if it would have been just as good on the DS). But do the Benjamins come out to play for a turn-based strategy game? Me thinks no. Eh, at least it isn't a Petz Pony game.

In the 7.5 range, we find Nintendo's top-rated launch title, Nintendogs + Cats. Out of curiosity, have you all heard anyone play Nintendogs + Cats? It's all the frustration of owning a real animal, without the requisite face-licking. Julian, sit. Sit. Sit. sit. Julian, sit. You little bastard, I'm going to toss you out the window. *sigh* Julian, sit.

Someone had to get the lowest review scores, and who but the franchise's diehard following didn't point to Samurai Warriors: Chronicles as a forgone conclusion? (In fact, that game's Metacritic average currently sits at a 6.0, so good on you, Tecmo Koei.) No, instead it was Steel Diver from a relatively obscure Kyoto-based company called, let me see if I can get this right, Nintendo. (You may have heard of Nintendo. It's the company with audacity enough to support the launch of its new $250 handheld with a janky wreck of a submarine game.)

If this dog could urinate on your rug, it would. And it would laugh at you and laugh at you and laugh at you.
If this dog could urinate on your rug, it would. And it would laugh at you and laugh at you and laugh at you.

Software of the $40 variety seems to be a non-starter; maybe it's the pack-ins. Let's see, Face Raiders takes casual misanthropy to levels not seen since the days of Jonathan Swift. And as easy as it would be to call the AR Games "neat" or "interesting," in reality, they are throw-away tech demos with lasting appeal to rival a drunken mascot donnybrook at your local sporting event.

StreetPass. Here, at long last, I'm seeing system-selling software. I have a coworker whom I will call Sophia that seems to be utterly enamored with the StreetPass feature, maintaining that while she owns not a single 3DS game, she'll nonetheless compulsively check her 3DS Mii Plaza, hoping for new puzzle pieces, a stronger RPG fighter, or chat updates. Nintendo's commodification of social ties here is inspiring.

In fact, on multiple occasions I have seen my coworkers huddle together, tittering away at the unexpected enthusiasm they have for this mode. You know, when a grown man squeals with the verve of a gleeful child at the arrival of a new puzzle piece, I think I get that. For better or for worse, that's an image not soon to vacate my mind.

But in the end, what are we looking at here? An ancillary feature that can sustain itself for only so long. Nintendo: Where is your tried-and-true Mario Forever strategy? How is it that of the three games you launched alongside the system, none were deemed "great" by GameSpot's critics. Worse, how is it that one earned the ignominious "poor" rating?

Does Nintendo really want people's first impressions of the 3DS to be Steel Diver?
Does Nintendo really want people's first impressions of the 3DS to be Steel Diver?

And things started out so well. When the system debuted at the 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo, Nintendo was quick to point out first-party support, announcing that new installments in the Kid Icarus, PilotWings, Mario Kart, Nintendogs, Animal Crossing, StarFox, and Paper Mario franchises were en route. You want to build buzz for a launch system? Give me a new Kid Icarus!

(As a side note, I realize that pining for the release of a game whose lead character is a small boy who flits about dressed in a Grecian toga is problematic. Readers, do not judge me.)

My reserves have run dry, so I'm left to assume that, oh no, all of these systems were sold on a promise. Is that it? Is it that the 3DS is flush with potential, and what's currently available is good enough to justify the purchase of a system that has yet to justify itself? What's the downside of waiting until there's a reason to buy the 3DS? Explain this to me, you crazy early-adopters. Convince me to buy a 3DS.

We are no gaming journalist. The only chance we have to experience the new 3D feature is if we buy it an try it (or if one of our friends gets one). Some of the games ar niche games. Pilot wings and shadow wars fill genres that are not mainstream. Most reviewers think they need to deduct points because the mainstream doesn't like to try something new. Most game reviews for any format are innacurate. The reviewers has tons of games to get through. They play a title for a few hours, make some assumption and go on to play something else. They miss the time to sit quietly with pilot wings. Take the glider out and hit the thermals, do some crazy stunts for fun and enjoy the little 3D world. Nintendo did something smart for 3 rd party developers with this release. They have 2 months to sell their games without direct competition from Nintendo. Net effect is that these titles get bigger sales 3rd party developers make more money and have a project team in place for 3DS development. Smart move Nintendo!

Ya im sure you could wait for the when the big games come out but that will be idk around xmas shopping time. Im sure you will LOVE to wait in lines to buy the 3DS cause you cant preoreder something thats already out. I do also think they brought it out early to get ppl hyped up about it altho, they coulda waited 2 more months and have 10 good games off all diffrent sorts of genres other then just steetfighter

@FallenOneX: I think you added a space after @ so I didn't know you replied till you msged me. I agree that Sony/MS/Nintendo won't be affected by whether people hold on to purchasing a new system due to lack of good launch titles and will not affect their future launches. I think they key point of article is bashing the herd mentality, or as a friend of mine likes to call it, the iSheep Syndrome. People buying stuff just coz it is shiny and new and everyone who wants to look cool and hip has to have one.

@kazeswen you do know that you wouldn't need to fish out $250 just to try some really menial games. (WHERE IS MARIO) just hop over to hmv or gamespot and they should have demo models.

This is an april fool's joke? I don't see a joke anywhere, and I fully agree with what was said there. My guess is that it's a frustrated member of GS that used April's fool as a way to get his real opinion out on the website. Since it seems GS is feeding us with cr*p on a 100$ worth system sold for 250$. The 3DS is an overpriced system, that had no decent game released on day one, and has tons of sheeps buying it. This article is a nice sumary of this.

Of course the 3DS is gonna rock, some day, because right now I'm not the least impressed. Sure Street Fighter looks cool, but it's more of a game I'd like to try out than a game I'd like to own. Nintendo could've done so much better.

K I love my 3DS. Even if I didnt have street fighter for it (which is very fun to play), I love all the extra features so much that its more than worth it to have while waiting for the big games to come out.

Yes the launch lineup was dull and even angered me. But then again, with Starfox, Zelda, and Animal Crossing coming soon enough, they obviously knew weak launch titles wouldn't be a problem in the long run.

One word "Curiosity" Why did millions of people rush out to go see "Paranormal Acivity"? The movies blows, but people were curios to see what the hype was about. 3DS is the worlds first handheld glasseless 3D console. Nobody's ever played glasseless 3D before, and that is the single reason why everyone bought it. The launch titles weren't important, so long as they showed off the 3D effects. That's why I got it. I was curios as what glassless 3D gaming was like. That's it.

Magrino being a professional troll? diden't see that coming. You should realise being in your profession that reviews and games themselves as a medium are very subjective. I enjoy playing with the over the shoulder view in street fighter, what do you say to that?

This article fails hard. I swear if I were to post the same exact thing in the DS/3DS forums, I'd get modded & the post would be removed. This article clearly trolls..there's a line between sharing an opinion & blatantly bashing a product. Guess where this article falls. & it's rude to say "How's your mom?" considering some people's mothers may be dead or something. Plus it just sounds like a jerk thing to say.

But i am digging playing on the great DS games with the new joy stick etc.. no point in buying a DS lite or DSI with a 3ds that can do everything and more

Just one thing you say SSFIV:3D is "kind of an inferior port of an otherwise exceptional fighter". But SSFIV is in fact just a prettier version of an almost 20 year old game...

I bought mine in part, because GameSpot has done everything they can to make it sound like a terrific new system for the last year and a half. You guys have been falling all over yourselves about this system for a long time. Now that I have one you write this?? What gives?? I am happy I have mine though. I am starting to get a little tired of SSF but I am looking forward to some new games very soon. All of the AR games and the 3D camera is a very cool reason to drop $250 in itself. For me SSF is not the best fighter. In fact I do not prefer it on my consoles in any way. But it is very cool to have it for my morning "bathroom break".

I don't understand why people buy a console for the "potential" of the system. If you enjoy it who am i to judge but why not buy it when there are actually good games for it??

It having potential is a ridiculous reason to buy it. Why not wait until it's potential is actually proven? There's an infinite supply of them. Makes no sense.

I agree with the writer. The launch line-up was brutal, and everybody bought it just to have the new thing. I almost fell for it too. It all sounded so cool. What are you guys gonna use these things for until good games come out?

Mr. Magrino, I don't understand the point of this article. Firstly, you seem to already know the reason why people bought this device. In fact, you put it quite eloquently, "...the 3DS is flush with potential, and what's currently available is good enough to justify the purchase of a system..." That's it. That's the reason. Really. I'm confused as to why you expect that all GS readers treat GS reviews as the be-all end-all of video game reviews. When I make a purchase, a lot more factors go in to why and what I buy than just the opinion of GS reviewers. As some of your readers have pointed out, the GS reviews for the 3DS launch titles have been unusually low. Doesn't it seem reasonable that others might use more resources to inform their decision than just your website? If the reasons people bought the 3DS don't make any sense to you, well, that's just too bad. The idea that these "crazy early-adopters" need to convince you of anything is just idiotic, and frankly, insulting. All I can conclude is that your objective here was to bash people who, for whatever reason, bought the system recently.

Honestly, I haven't bought a 3ds yet, because the games I want aren't out yet, But I can understand people buying them now. The games they want will be out soon and there wont be an updated console between now and then, so It doesn't matter if you buy it now and enjoy a game or 2 on it till the big games come out, or wait. But it seems most opted to buy it now. What games you may ask? Kid Icarus*which I don't really care for* Zelda 3d Final Fantasy 3d Mario Kart 3d Mario 3d Star Fox 3d Metal Gear Solid 3d Kingdom Hearts And.... Future Games Likes Pokemon

Maybe Gamespot could take this opportunity to rethink their reviews. I don't know about the rest of you. But I do think you criminally under score Nintendo games of late. (don't try to justify it by telling me to look at the SMG2 review) Pokemon B/W and Pilotwings Resort are the most recent examples. Pokemon Black and White review score was a disgrace. The launch line up was fine, it did the job, obviously the star of the show was the 3DS itself. What did PS3 and xbox360 have at launch, other than HD graphics????? Gamespot has got so bad, bring back Greg, greatest reviewer of all time. Only he probably cant stand to look at the reviews anymore either. Ps. Pilotwings resort is ideal for handheld with its bitesize missions, textbook playablity, nice system showcase if you ask me.... Minimum 8.2 in my eyes, absolute minimum.

I, like many other people who bought a 3DS on launch day bought it on the promise of future great titles.. i do indeed feel like i should have waited but that's water under the bridge now, it's not like i'm getting no use out of the system either.. Ridge Racer 3D is taking up most of my time with the system and is my favourite launch title by far. I also have Street Fighter and Pilotwings which are also fun games. But yes, I see what you're saying and i agree.. i should have waited.

I've seen the 3DS, and really, the AR functionality alone is going to be a system seller. That, combined with potential Mario and Zelda later will sell it to a lot of people.

I was excited for the 3DS. But there's nothing to play on it that's interesting to me, the price is too steep for a handheld and the battery life is 2-5 hours. I know they'll release an updated 3DS with extended battery life. I also know that by then many games should be out that will interest me and hopefully we'll see a lower price either on the hardware or the software by then.

@ gamespot editor It's a shame Ms. Williams didn't teach you objective analysis.

@dexter_graves Ah, Super Mario Bros wasn't an NES launch title. Just FYI. Aside from that, well said.

Honestly, it's extremely understandable to want to wait to buy the system. This may be one of the worst launches for a system ever. I've gotten by with Madden and Pokemon Black (And I do plan on getting Samurai Warriors). However, this thing will sell like hotcakes once a Zelda or Mario game is launch. The system could literally disappear. Buy it now, or next year.
