Carmack 'not all that excited' about next-gen

Id Software boss says Microsoft and Sony should focus on building experiences, rather than pushing technology with future consoles.

Id Software boss John Carmack can be added to the list of designers who are not particularly enthused over the prospect of next-generation hardware. Speaking to Games Industry International, Carmack said Microsoft and Sony are too focused on boosting technical power, when they should instead be working on building new experiences for future consoles.

Carmack is not terribly excited about new consoles from Microsoft and Sony.
Carmack is not terribly excited about new consoles from Microsoft and Sony.

"Sony and Microsoft are going to fight over gigaflops and teraflops and GPUs and all this. In the end, it won't make that much difference," he said. "When you get to this, it makes a really big difference in the experience. Nintendo went and brought motion into the gaming sphere and while only having a tenth of the processing power was able to outsell all of them in all of these ways. I think someone has an opportunity to do this here. It takes a whole ecosystem though, but it is almost perfect."

If a recent rumor proves accurate, Sony's PlayStation 4 and Microsoft's next Xbox will run on the same graphics card.

Carmack went on to claim that current-generation hardware is capable of supporting anything developers can think up.

"Any creative vision that a designer could come up with, we can do a pretty good job representing on current generation and certainly on PC," he said. "In many ways I am not all that excited about the next generation. It will let us do everything we want to do now, with the knobs turned up."

In March, God of War and Twisted Metal creator David Jaffe said he "couldn't care less" about the next generation of consoles, further explaining that these new platforms will make "ambitious" projects more difficult.

The last release from id Software was Rage, a first-person shooter that was released in October and won generally favorable marks with reviewers. That game went on to become October's fourth-best-selling title in a month that saw the release of high-profile games like Battlefield 3, Forza Motorsport 4, and Batman: Arkham City.

Currently, the developer is working on Doom 4, which id Software denied as being "indefinitely postponed," as an October rumor suggested.

Pushing forward is "NOT" necessarily for Consoles, since it doesn' have Backward Compatibility, simply because when Consoles pushing forward they can't go backward.

Pushing forward is necessarily for PC, for obvious reasons, it's open / multi-faceted platform: since it does support backward compatibility, and next-gen capability (and many other things.)

Just admit it, Consoles people really want next-gen.

they just doesn't want losing their current gaming library.

that's the problem with gaming consoles: lack of backward compatible,

and that's what made Consoles suck, and dragging PC to their hole.

PC elitist mad,

Consoles people content with what they have,

Developers (Crytek, DICE, Epic.) that specialized on Game Engine become "annoyed" with current stale system,

Some rain-coating the majority of Consoles people (just like what John Carmack did.)

first of all i'm having a hard time trying to figure out what you're trying to say... all i got was backwards compatibility, and i don't think that's necessary... because for people like myself, who tend to keep all their consoles... so if i want to play an older game (like: PS1, PS2, etc...) i simply just push the power button and play... i understand where you're going with the PC thing, but i don't like PC gaming... so i would rather just buy the next generation console...

See.. the Wii went and added motion controls, but how many games did mr. Carmack make for the Wii? How often did he utilize the 'new experience' that it offered? Simply put, he didn't and most developers had problems making games that utilized the Wii's motion controls in a natural way. Yes it out sold, but I think wii sports was the main selling feature of the Wii. More power is what the industry needs, innovation is more in the addons (kinect, move, and such)

really i could careless about motion, and i'm tired of hearing that the Nintendo out-sold everyone else... the real reason why Nintendo did so well is because non-gamers were looking to lose weight, so they bought the system... didn't buy any games for it, just the fitness stuff... i got a niece that has the system, and the only game she has is guitar hero...

Current gen consoles graphics cards are about 25 times weaker than an average PC graphics card, and he wants new consoles which will last another 6 years and aren't even released yet, to have the same weak hardware of current consoles?

Erm, how stupid can someone be? I thought he's a "genius"

I don't know where you get that number, but you kinda are making his point for him. When next-gen consoles come out, it only be a little while before they lag behind PC graphics again. Heck, some people already had better graphics on their PCs then the PS3 before it even came out.

So in other words, if you want developers to be excited about next gen, you'll have to do more than just better graphics. Cause if that was what they cared about, they'd be making games for the PC instead.

@razama @davor_25 If people wanted the latest, they would have got a PC. What is a console but a simplified PC. No complex OS no integration and no maintenance. Back when the Xbox was launched. PCs were much more expensive but not today. You can run the much better PC version of Skyrim on a PC worth 450 quid on ultra settings. Going to be interesting to see who buys a console next time around and why. Especially since they announced the killing off of the rental and second user console game market.

So is Carmack going to back up his own words? Or does he mean he wants someone else to build the experiences he is talking about?

Yeah, that's wrong. The Unreal Engine 4 demo makes that abundantly clear....

I agree with what he's saying about power and the current generation being more or less capable. But to imply that power is "all" that Sony and MS are doing is absurd. Has he not seen what MS are doing with Windows 8/tablets/phones? Has he not seen Kinect and the possibilities it represents? I think you've been living under a rock for too long, Mr Carmack.

sorry, but i don't really care what this guy has to say. he is only saying it because i think he has lost his touch in creating game engines and games themselves. his engines always come out years after unreal's engine and they never look or perform any better, and sometimes looks worse. same with his games. they take forever to come out, but when they do, they are only average games that don't look or play any better than all the hundreds of other average games out there. this guy is stuck in the 90's. it is time for new consoles to come out with it's new and powerful technologies. ether get up with the times, or get the heck out.

I'm with Carmack on this. I play many "older" games on my PC and I'm cool with it.

From Fallout 3 to Far Cry to Unreal Tournament 2004 to the original Deus Ex (1999). Fallout 3 runs damn good on medium settings. The others run damn good on MAX settings look damn good to me too.

Not every gamer, PC or console, is a graphics whore. If everyone were a graphics whore, sites like GOG and Gamersgate wouldn't be as successful as they are.

@nate1222 Its not just about graphics. It is about the size and complexity of the environment, what you co do with it and how interactive it becomes. Not to mention how many choices you have. There are good reasons why consoles use a lot of tricks to reduce graphical distance etc etc but in the same way, there are a lot of reasons you get those hit button x , y, z type boss encounters on consoles. They need to be as linear as possible because they simply cannot cope with a truly open environment. The more power the better. We might get better games as a result not just better graphics.

Carmack is just saying current tech is strong enough to make just about any game you want so its not really that important to make a more expensive system any time soon. Just focus on making good games or innovative new ideas would help games a lot more then another xbox with better graphics.

most of you guys in here that call yourselves console gamer consumers have focused on the graphics department.

i know that's the main topic of this article, and most don't want to stray from a given topic, but is that all you desire?

if that is the case, Epic is right to push M$ and sony for better hardware.

@Mega_Loser Agree with the point your trying to make but its a bigger problem than that. There is a reason so many console games are so linear. People and marketing departments want a great looking easy to sell unit shifting game. To do that with limitations in hardware resources you must compromise. Limit interactivity and basically limit choices making games more and more linear.

Since even current high end PC video cards are already guaranteed to be MUCH more powerful than either next console from Sony and MS I don't think whatever they put out is going to "inspire" better games just from processing power. The consoles will surely be relatively powerful, but not mindblowing because if at release they were as powerful as the latest gpu card you can put into PCs then the consoles would be crazy expensive.

The Playstation 4 and Xbox 720 are going to inspire developers to create better games? That is the whole idea otherwise the industry would still be at Atari 2600. Technology does advance if only to inspire the "experiences" Carmack alludes to?

IMO, the gaming industry has bigger issues to worry about than aging tech.

1.) Nickle and dime DLCs

2.) Intrusive DRM

3.) Milking franchises

4.) Foregoing innovation and originality for tried & true

These problems won't solve itself just because of next-gen.

@Dudeinator

I don't like any of the above either, but let us be honest. Did all that stop people from buying Call of Duty games? Nope. Did it stop the sale of Sports titles? nope. Did it stop the sale of anything to the point that developers decided to stop using them? Maybe DRM... a tiny bit.

But people who are around 14-16 years old are playing games, and they are used to it. People aren't going to complain about those things more, they are complaining less and less.

Hopefully, at least #4 is remedied though...

@airfoemoe Both Doom 3 and Rage were pretty good games but they were not outstanding like we expected especially from a developer like Carmack. Too bad he couldn't live up to pedigree. Technical problems with Rage was pretty embarrassing but i played Xbox version so other than texture pop up problems, it was alrite..

He's right about developers having full freedom with the current hardware that we have, but at what cost? With the difficulties to oppose the limitations of the hardware to make games like Uncharted 2/3, game development takes a lot longer than it should and it takes more employees to get the game past the limitations, causing development to be more expensive than it should compared to making your game on brand-new hardware.

John Carmack couldn't care less about "next-gen", because it is already on PC, anyone that played Rage with full AA (@32x) at 60 frames, it was just incredible, I didn't knew the buildings on the background were really rendered until I changed my AA to 4 or 8 to see the difference, you cannot see a single jaggie on the game @ 32x yet the game doesnt get sloppy as Crysis 2 or Metro 2033, on consoles it's the same, fluid graphics with Rage, sloppy with C2 and Metro.

When you create an engine, you must optimize it for the machines you have NOW, I think most devs could do an engine that required some other vid cards and proccessors that are not yet created but will exist.

BUT as of RIGHT NOW, there isn't a game out there, that requires an upgrade, Metro 2033 (best/most demanding pc graphics) was released on consoles too (well at least for the xbox 360), and it isn't that relevant since the experience is a rather common one.

New consoles 2013/2014 @ $500-600 or $400 if they are in a good mood for what?, COD?, FIFA 14?, Killzone 4?, Halo 5?.....lol, yeah, I'm excited too...
