Call of Duty: Cold Warfare next up for Treyarch?

Studio reportedly seeking "Vietnam War-era tunes, as well as Cuban, African, and Soviet Union music," pointing to guerrilla warfare hot spots of '60s and '70s.

Source: The video game blog called That Videogame Blog.

What we heard: As Call of Duty: World at War was being finalized last fall, its developer indicated that it could be the final Call of Duty game set during World War II. After saying that the now-best-seller's setting had already been decided when Treyarch came on board, senior producer Noah Heller dropped a major hint that it would be the last entry in the series based on the 1939-1945 conflict.

"I won't let your readers read into the comment too much, but we are showing the final battles of the Pacific and the European Theater, and that lets us put a close to the war," he told OXM UK magazine last year. "I'm sure game companies will be making World War II games for years to come, and World War II is a very classic war. But we're happy that we put the war to bed."

This week, a That Videogame Blog article sparked a rumor firestorm that Treyarch may move the series to another Pacific Rim locale: Vietnam. Citing a "reliable" source, the blog reported that, "Activision is looking to license music for 'Call of Duty 7,' music that gives some serious hints as to the locations the game may take us. Mentioned were Vietnam War-era tunes, as well as Cuban, African, and Soviet Union music. The source says Call of Duty: World at War's senior producer Noah Heller is involved, so it looks like Treyarch is once again developing."

The official story: Activision reps covering the Call of Duty franchises politely declined to comment.

No Caption Provided

Bogus or not bogus?: Looking not bogus, given that apparently That Videogame Blog's source was pressured to recant. Several hours after the original story went live (cached version linked above), it was hurriedly replaced by an apologetic note.

"Whoops, looks like talking about this is too soon for some people and our source has requested of us to remove the story," reads the new post.

Although an intriguing concept, Vietnam-era shooters have proven problematic in the past, with Battlefield: Vietnam, Men of Valor, Vietcong, Conflict: Vietnam, and 2004's Shellshock: 'Nam '67 selling poorly. (The latter two games were also fragged by critics.) Given the multiple locales, another possibility could be a game set in the hotspots of the decades-long conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union. Call of Duty: Cold Warfare, anyone?

This would be nice, World War 2 is getting old and it would be nice to see the virtually forgotten Korean War and the war that most Americans would like to forget, Vietnam.

I'm not gonna lie IMO, WAW was not nearly as good as Cod4 and never will be! But It is still a great game and I think Treyarch did a great job at making it my Favorite WWII FPS campaign, and keeping the same basic AMAZING formula Infinity Ward created in Cod4's Multiplayer...Even though I have both,, I still Play COD4 over CODWAW any day! But don't bash Treyarch WAW wasn't as bad as many of you make it out to be! It was more or less, an experiment on the COD4 Multiplayer formula when they added Tanks,,, and now they know we(as a majority vote) dislike having vehicles in multiplayer,,,so they will learn from that and keep them out of their next game,,, What I'm saying is put some faith in them,,, and input... I feel as though Treyarch will only get better from where they are at!

I've been waiting for Call of Duty or any franchise to create a Cold War era FPS. I think something along the lines of a fictional WW3 would be awesome! World in Conflict gone FPS anyone?

Also, I like treyarch a lot. I like them as much as infinity ward. I thought that world at war and call of duty 3 were two of the best call of duty games with the third being call of duty 2. And this whole nonsense about them following in the footsteps of another developer, you think they care? As long as you keep buying their games they are fine with that idea. Raven Software is the same way with ID Software.

Hmm, considering they did an awesome job at making world at war gritty and emotional, they should be able to do a very awesome vietnam game.

Vietnam please! I bet they go with that, so they can just reuse a lot of assets from COD:WAW, like the "crazy man in the bushes" AI. I think Treyarch could do Vietnam and make it without controversy. There were scenes in WAW that show they could handle touchy subject matter.

It will be good to see a FPS that is a non-WWII/Aliens entry.

I could shoot Commies all day. However, while many people are tired of WWII shooters, I will surely miss shooting Nazis as well.

I say: get with the times. do an America Vs. Iraq CoD lol. but seriously, the CoD games have grown to be revolutionary, I think if they took a break from CoD for a while and did a different genre, it would turn out great. then, in a few years, they can do CoD 8 and people will love it.

I've always wanted a good Vietnam War game to play. Even though it's controversial, it had some great battles with a great enemy. But even so, I doubt Treyarch will ever make a Call of Duty that bests Infinity Ward.

Wow. When are people going to realize that after Infinity Ward makes a COD game, Treyarch just produces a new skin pack and adds that on, and that's all they do.

omfg treyarch is never going to have their own deck of cards they always play the premade set that infinity ward sets up and then follows in their shadow COD 3 was rubbish because COD 1 and 2 were good but not revolutionary COD 4 was revolutionary then they just take that for COD 5 now COD 6 being made by Infinity again is hopefully not gonna be the same thing but a good chance of it then COD 7 is gonna follow off COD 6... shame.

@dl5852930: I hate when people think Activision made CoD4/CoD2 etc. It was INFINITY WARD NOT Activision. Activision is just the publisher, Infinity Ward is the developer.

dl5852930, Activision didn't even develop any COD games. They published all of them though. I think you are referring to Infinity Ward, and in my opinion, there are still more stuffs to be used in past warfare, Vietnam is one of them.
