Blizzard Talks Warcraft 3: Reforged Complaints, Patches Coming Soon

The studio apologized and offered details on upcoming patches for the Warcraft 3 remaster.

After a wave of criticism was directed toward Activision Blizzard for its handling of Warcraft 3: Reforged, the company has issued an apology for the problems and outlined a couple of patches currently in the works. [Update: Blizzard has released the first of these, with a new patch out now.]

Warcraft community manager Randy "Kaivax" Jordan took to the company's forums to discuss Blizzard's plans for Reforged, specifying that the team is "fully committed to supporting the game [and the Warcraft 3 community] for a long time to come." This includes preparing a patch scheduled to go live later this week that will address mismatched color and shading modules, portrait animations and audio bugs, UI fixes, and more.

Now Playing: Warcraft 3: Reforged - Original Vs. Remaster (Cinematic Trailer)

Most notably, though, Jordan takes aim at the cutscene controversy. Many fans have noted that certain cutscenes failed to live up to what Blizzard had previously shown during BlizzCon 2018. Jordan said the lack of re-animated cutscenes was, essentially, to keep the original spirit of Warcraft 3 intact.

"[W]e did not want the in-game cutscenes to steer too far from the original game," Jordan said. "We went a little deeper into the thought process behind that at the show, but the main takeaway is that the campaigns tell one of the classic stories in Warcraft history, and we want to preserve the true spirit of Warcraft 3 and allow players to relive these unforgettable moments as they were (albeit rebuilt with new animations and the higher fidelity art)."

"[W]e want to say we're sorry to those of you who didn't have the experience you wanted, and we'd like to share our plans for what’s coming next."

Elsewhere in the forum post, Jordan said that some online features like clans and leaderboards are still coming. Jordan didn't provide a definitive date as to when they will go live, other than the vague "in the coming weeks" timeframe. Still, he confirmed that Blizzard is "hard at work" on getting these missing features up and running.

@valcrist09: A lot of the stuff people are complaining about probably can't be fixed within a week or two of the game launching. I sure hope Blizzard gets to the real issues, but I would expect that to take a while.

@Barighm: Lol yes don't know why they are misleading people still. Also there is so much stuff missing from the original game I'm not even sure they will be able to fix everything. People have long lists up of missing features from the original game. Ex. include certain dialogue from units missing and even things like more varied attack animations. This was supposed to be a remaster...not a demaster.

Typical PR mumbo jumbo. Making it seem like it's our fault for expecting cut scenes. Don't get caught in this Blizzard of lies. This terrible company doesn't deserve a dime anymore.

Glad I didn't buy it.

I'm not refunding my game. All I ask is follow Hello Games's footstep who took to task to repair their No Man's Sky's abysmal release, from shit to hit. Even if it took Blizzard 1 or 2 years to do so. Blizzard has always been a paramount example of perfectly polished release. I guess with the old guards gone from Blizzard, tolerance for lousy qc must've crept in.

@teamo765: It saddens me but I agree with the others. Hello games is a smaller indie company and works hard to please their existing fan base as a means to establish a name for themselves. Instead of releasing a new game they opted to allocate all resources to fixing the current game and not giving up on it. This differs to how triple A game companies operate who instead will pull resources if a games does not rake in as much money as expected or if the game itself is deemed not to be as financially lucrative (ex. RTS might not be as lucrative a genre as a TFT style shooter or a remaster not as lucrative as a new game). We have seen Triple A gaming companies that will abandon games by the wayside if they feel it won't make enough money. While this is speculation this is probably the reason features were cut from Reforged to begin with. That and probably time constraints. We have also seen other examples of blizzard doing this with titles like heroes of the storm where cuts were made and much of the support for the game was dropped (ex. esport dropped). I'm not sure waiting on blizzard will yield anything fruitful given past track records for this company. Triple A companies today are only focused on how much money they can possibly squeeze out of your wallet, and blizzard is no different.

"40+ hours of epic gameplay, with 4+ hours of reforged in-game cutscenes"

That is still on their Reforged site, front page, along with cutscenes not in the game. This site was published after they had said their shit about "preserving" at Blizzcon. I understand why they cut the scenes, as it would've been really expensive to execute 4 hours of in-game cinematics using those characters and rigs, but 1) Don't say it was because they were being preservationists, and 2) Don't promote the game with said cutscenes! Like, what the ****?

@SythasVC: They really said that? Eliminated the cutscenes because they want to "preserve" the game, lol but they used that to promote the damn thing. What a bunch of assholes

they claims they did not want to re-animate the cutscenes in order to keep the original spirit intact... Ok then what is the reason to advertise the re-animated version in their official page?

If they did believe not re-animating the scenes are better, wouldn't they be using the scenes currently in game ( graphically updated, top view scenes) instead of the close up animated scene from Blizzcon to advertise reforged?

It seems they put as little effort in the respond as they did with reforged.

@cytheh: Only the cutscenes brought my attention. And I am a potential new buyer, only partially knows warcraft because of heartsthone, I was honestly interested... If you just swaps the game models, that's not a decent remaster. Even modders can easily do that, upscaling textures and etc. The cutscenes are more complex, it kinda justify the whole "remake" facade. But no, let's remove that.

I am not buying until I see how well Blizzard takes care of it. They did well by D3 but ever since selling out to Activision they have been slacking here and there but They may weather the storm again. The only thing I ask please do not muck up D4 even though it will be persistent online.

Easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Blizzard has just been downgraded to...well, I can't decide on the grade because they do support and polish their games well beyond any of the other crappy publishers like EA, Ubisoft, and Bethesda, but they're definitely not a premier dev anymore.

@Barighm: If we take the word "polish" as literal as possible, then yes... But taking overwatch in consideration, the only blizzard game I've played for a long period of time (+- 1 year), their polishing actually made the game worse. Ever since Brigitte was introduced, a hybrid between tank and a healer, the game was broken right there. They tried to fix it with time, add more playable characters, etc.. but it only got worse and worse. So, if your dev team is worthless, they have no idea about what they are doing... It's better to simply abandon the game.

@Barighm: A number of posts are suggesting that this is false. They weren't being banned for helping people get refunds. I refunded after way more than 2 hours played a day after release with no problems whatsoever and I couldn't find a single person who had any issues refunding which YouTubers and posters were saying was the case. Didn't see anyone getting any supposedly unjustified bans in the early hours post release either other than the hate brigade due to people like Bellular and other YouTubers who were riling up the fanbase.

Now don't get me wrong the criticism and feedback is well deserved but I've noticed many people are just jumping on the bandwagon with nonfactual information.

@Barighm:EA has actually been making good decisions as of late and have made strides within the gaming community. If they continue to make the right moves especially the moves they made with Battlefront 2 which is phenominal right now I will start buying EA again. Same with Blizzard. Blizzard is in really bad shape right now with leaders that have not lived up to the Blizzard formula of is it fun to play and bug free? Ion Hazzakostos is one of them and should have been fired a long time ago. I will not touch another Blizzard game for a long time. They are WORSE than EA right now IMO:P

@creepshow2: EA has made strides before, but, like Capcom, they're quick to fall back into bad habits.

@Barighm: I'm hoping that EA has learned from Star Wars: Fallen Order - that there is a nice market for high quality, single player stories with none of that live service junk ("Repeat content ad nauseam to get new lottery tickets for loot!", "pay to win", "spend money here!"

@teg: Alas, this is not the first time this has happened (see Dead Space). The first question EA is going to ask themselves it not whether not they should produce more singleplayer games, but how they can monetize Fallen Order further and how much they can get away with before the franchise crashes.

I'm not saying it's likely, I'm just hoping.

Anthem was the first Bioware game I didn't buy, as this kind of business model is not compatible with me enjoying a game - it's based on repetition ad nauseaum, and in other cases ("F2P") on slowing down progress so that you'll spend a lot of money avoiding artificial barriers for just a little while.

I've got money, but I want to spend it on quality single-player games rather than loot driven "live services" and "F2P".

@teg: Smart man, I'm the same. I much prefer quality single player gaming experiences like jedi fallen order, last of us (had online but single player was where it was at), god of war, beyond 2 souls, mass effect 1-2 etc. I feel single player games offer a more immersive experience and put an emphasis on telling engaging stories which just aren't present in these live service games/mmo's of today. I also feel some of these in game economies in these live services games are also just plain immersion breaking and/or destroy the player experience by disrupting its pacing, ex. making the game more grindy to promote spending.
