Big in Japan Nov. 16-22: DSi XL

Nintendo's supersize handheld sells 100,000 in two days; Left 4 Dead, Taiko Drum Master best-selling new games on a mostly familiar top 10 list.

Nintendo's extra-large handheld racked up extra-large sales during its first days of release, according to Media Create's weekly Japanese sales figures. The DSi XL (known as the DSi LL in Japan) sold 100,553 systems for the week of November 16-22. The oversized handheld launched in Japanese stores November 21 and is expected to arrive in the West early next year.

The fourth iteration of Nintendo's DS handheld sold 100,000 units in its first two days on sale in Japan.
The fourth iteration of Nintendo's DS handheld sold 100,000 units in its first two days on sale in Japan.

Perhaps as impressive, the launch of the XL didn't entirely undercut sales of the existing DSi. Nintendo's next newest handheld sold 32,070, down slightly from the previous week's 33,749. That was good enough to finish fourth on the hardware list, within spitting distance of the PSP (32,752 sold), Wii (32,844 sold), and PlayStation 3 (34,752 sold). Nintendo's original revision to the DS line, the DS Lite, was the fifth-best-selling system of the week, finding new homes for 5,051 units and besting the struggling PSP Go (4,574 sold) and Xbox 360 (4,085 sold).

While the DSi XL held sway in the hardware charts, Nintendo's lineup of portable games topped the software best-sellers. After three straight weeks looking up at soccer games and Bayonetta, Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver combined to reclaim the top spot on the charts, selling 55,361 copies. It was followed by a trio of exceedingly familiar faces, with Nintendo's DS Tomodachi Collection selling 49,308 games, Wii Fit Plus moving 42,832 copies, and the DS pair of Inazuma Eleven 2: Kyoui no Shinryokusha - Fire and Blizzard taking fourth with 28,734 sold.

Namco Bandai breathed a little new life into the charts with the debuting Taiko no Tatsujin Wii 2 in fifth place, racking up sales of 28,282. Following close behind was another new release, the Xbox 360 shooter Left 4 Dead 2, with 27,507. The last new game on the charts was Nintendo's DS edition of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, which landed in ninth place with 23,420 sold.

This is total crap. The DSi was just released and then they come out with an XL just a few months later? Did they decide at the last minute to do this but it was too late for the regular DSi? And I can't believe the Japanese people support this!

i would love the large ds if they went back to incorporating the gba slot. that was a terrible idea to remove it and the sole reason why i wont ever want/buy/keep/accept a dsi. they take away key features and replace it with substandard ones. if i wanted to take photos, thats what my camera is. its why i have an ipod and internet. i dont need crappy versions in my ds. what i want is what the ds is for: games. the sole good addition is the downloadable games.

I see the dsi as success, but like always Nintendo is missing it. No gba slot and no past dsi ware games downloads of other Nintendo handhelds. / DS would sell like crazy if gamers could download gb micro, advance, sp, gb color, games. Anyone wouldn't download games like Super Mario Land?

Man I'm glad I don't live in Japan because it seems that my only gaming options would be revisions of games I've played already and DS-everything. Why the Japanese constantly and consistently by into Nintendo's constant remakes and revisions I'll never know.

Okay so this is the fourth DS iteration?! When is Nintendo going to worry about their games, rather than their consoles that are selling like candy?!

If upgrading is good, then where is my Game Gear Plus, Neo Geo 3D, Genesis HD, Gameboy Color Beatles Psycadelic Edition, Neo Geo Pocket HD, Virtual Boy with more colors, and NGage 3? I'll just stick with my Atari 2600..... Kidding...... I own most of the systems above.

The Japanese gamer is almost completely different than non-Japanese, most of these are odd as hell on a top ten list, but that's from our view of course.

I think it is understandable for Nintendo to revise the DS. They are competing with all mobiles nowadays, whose models are constantly updated. Now, I do think the XL is a bit of a ripoff, as you get the same quality camera and same resolution screens. I am surprised Nintendo did not get their redesign out in the States before the holidays.

I dont understand why people complain about game consoles being revised, apple have revised the ipod range every year for the last decade, some changes have been minor whilst others are pretty major, this is celebrated by the apple users when they are announced. Nintendo and Sony have both revised thier systems (less frequently in comparison) and people here are moaning about it. Its about choices some people have poor eyesight so the XL will be great for them, others will prefer the DSi and if you are on a budget then you have the DSlite, they all play the same games at the end of the day.

Sony is different because they lost a lot of money off the PS3, so again, can you blame them on making a profit on the PSPgo? and it is all about a "fund" because I tell you what if Nintendo finished first place on the Gamecube and the N64, then there wouldn't have never been a Wii, instead there would have been a mammoth gaming system that the profits of the N64 and/or the GC would have garnished, but no instead all Nintendo could have afforded was a bullsh*t GC with motion controls that was affordable to everyone. C'mon dude don't HATE, it's common sense, Apple made billions of dollars off the iPod, so what is the return? and iPodTouch with the most precise touch controls and an accelerometer that is crisp like nothing else on the market! and if Apple was in 3rd or last place in the electronics industry then we would have never seen the iPod Touch. The only thing you're right about is that this is not a charity fund, but with saying that, it only made you seem like a complete moron, because it's not about charity in the gaming industry, it's about profit, and like I said, if Nintendo won the last two generations, then their next system would have been TRUE "next gen" but instead we all got sh*t motion controls, in which the Xbox360's (Natal) and the PS3's (Wand) will surpass this upcoming spring!

@colonialpikachu... dude you have no idea what your talking about. because like the old saying goes, "money doesn't grow on trees" and, it doesn't matter if your a small employee working at gamestop or you're a CEO at a big game company, the same rules apply, if you have the resources to fund your next project then you will comply to what the fans say. Look at Super Street Fighter IV for example. Street Fighter 4 was a project to find out if the demographic was still there, and it was!!!, SFIV sold millions, and so now what happens? CAPCOM will fund SSFIV, with everything the loyal fans want. I tell you one thing, I will buy SSFIV first day, because I'm a loyal fan, I would have even bought it at full price, because being a true fan I understand the value that is in SSFIV. Even though Capcom is throwing US fans a bone and not selling it for full price,

this is almost near the maximum size for a portable gaming device. the essence of handheld gaming is being compact. go any bigger than this and too big for most people. can't wait for spirit tracks.

there is no obligation or incentive to buy this unless you want the bigger screen. 100,000 is simply jaw-dropping number, especially for that reason. no reason to be upset it's not like you need to upgrade your dsi to bigger screens for any required reason.

Bigger screen? Again? Why don't they get it over with, and make a DS that plugs into a TV? If the screen's still not big enough, get a bigger TV? Still not enough? Get a projector, and use a wall... or the side of a building... the sky... the WORLD!! But then what would you use for a stylus? I got it, just cut down a tree, and use a crane! YES!! Muwahahaaaaaaa!!! (am I crazy? Maybe. But so is Nintendo for making yet another unnecessary modification to an already great system)

@TruXael Buying a game system isn't a charitable donation. It's not our responsibility to "Fund the development". This is just Sony trying to make money off of a new system. If they want the PSP2 to sell well, they have to add features, and if they want it to have features, they would need to make money by MAKING the PSPGo sell well, either by more features or a price drop. The original PSP sold pretty well, they should have used that money to make the PSPGo better, if all the PS2 money funded the PS3. People should tell Sony what they want so that the PSP2 sells well, it's not just complaining without doing anything. It's Sony's job to fund its own R&D, not the gamers'.

Nintendo's been making tiny upgrades to the DS over the past 3 years to try to fool kids into thinking that it's a whole new system and bug their parents into buying it. It's a DS Lite with a camera and a big screen. Just get a Wii and a digital camera, it doesn't seem like this is nicely portable like the DS Lite.

The Pokemon formula is brilliant. It's cute, cuddly and accessible for young players and then when those young players grow up, they find an incredibly deep fighting system hidden within. These are the finest 2D games ever made and I'm glad to see they're still immensely popular.

I don't understand why people are getting so upset about this. Nintendo execs have said in press releases that this is targeted at the elderly with impaired vision and/or arthritis. Remember that you don't have to buy every product that says Nintendo on the box and (although they would like you to) they certainly don't expect you to either.

Nintendo really should stop this insane upgrades, rather they are realizing in renewing the hardware, they want "a new way" of gaming invent all nice, but the generation of today are more inclined to the graphic,am I right? they do not look to stupid addded camera, bigger screens (even grainier yes!) or similar. watch k / h on the ds and the psp, compare that with 2 graphic display, big difference or not? And the new dsi Xl now have bigger screens, bigger than the PSP, and Nintendo just not that stupid that they thought the hardware update there so youth can enjoy rpg's fat and sort, but without the grain portion, well , no that's unfortunately not gone ...
