Amazon announces $99 streaming device; has 2GB RAM, quad-core processor, game controller is $40

[UPDATE 2] Amazon has released more details about the Fire TV. The $99 box features a Qualcomm Quad Core Snapdragon Krait 300 processor with Adreno 320GPU, and 2GB of RAM to support "high performance game experiences." It's reportedly faster than competitors like Apple TV, Roku, and Chromecast, but we won't know for sure until we can test it out.

Developers can program their Amazon Fire TV games to support Amazon's $40 Fire Controller or the console's Bluetooth controller, Amazon says on its special developers website. What's more, Amazon Fire TV supports up to 7 remotes and game controllers to be connected simultaneously, and each controller can be associated with an individual player ID.

Amazon Fire TV games will also allow you to use a combination of controllers (remotes and game-specific controllers) to "make multiplayer gaming easy for everyone," Amazon says.

Finally, the Amazon Fire TV console will support Amazon's payment services for in-game microtransactions. Because Amazon Fire TV users will need to register with their Amazon accounts, their payment profiles are already on file with no further effort to the player. Amazon Fire TV fully supports Amazon's in-app purchase API so that developers can offer a range of items to players including subscriptions and one-off purchases.

[UPDATE] Amazon has now detailed the Amazon Fire TV's gaming capabilities. The Fire Game Controller will sell for $40, though you can also play with the Amazon Fire TV controller. Games from EA, Disney, and Sega are coming to the device, and a version of Minecraft will also be available.

Amazon Game Studios is also making games itself, the first of which is a third-person shooter called Sev Zero. Presumably, Sev Zero will only be available on Amazon Fire TV and other Amazon devices. Amazon also acquired Killer Instinct developer Double Helix Games last year.

The Amazon Fire TV will be available for $99. A version of the box bundled with the Fire Game Controller will sell for $140. It's on sale from today.

The original story is below.

Today during a media event in New York City, retailer Amazon announced its long-rumored streaming device, which it is calling the Amazon Fire TV.

The device features a quad-core "best-in-class" processor with a dedicated GPU, as well as 2GB of RAM. Amazon promises 2X the performance of competitors like Apple TV, Roku, and Chromecast. The Amazon Fire TV will also ship with a Bluetooth controller that has a microphone in it for voice control.

During a live demonstration, Amazon showed off the Fire TV user interface, which included a tab for "Games." However, the role games will play in the device remains to be seen. The event is ongoing and you can follow along via GameSpot sister site CNET's live-blog.

According to a report from February, Amazon will launch the box possibly for under $300. Amazon has not announced a price so far during the event. Images of a rumored Amazon game controller emerged last month, though we saw none of that in the event today.

I'd like to see what the games look like when they are at the highest settings to gauge the competition that consoles will have.

Will it let you play video files stored on a USB hard drive/ Network share? I would buy it to replace my WDTV if so.

Usefull streaming device for Netflix and Hulu with some casual games thrown in, but if SteamOS gets Netflix and other media applications integrated then the ability to stream PC games using a Steam machine is a much more appealing option that this machine.

$100 for a streambox isn't too bad. I was thinking of picking up a chromecast dongle but something like this would make streaming easier. Pretty decent specs for the price too. Couldn't care less about the games on it.

Don't be fooled by the ads. These are all Android/mobile games. Most of them either have ads or have microtransaction paywalls that cost an arm and a leg.

Another Ouyaa :D :D :D :D ... why didn't they say it's build on UNIX or Linux it would sell better :D :D :D

That reminds me, my brother convinced his father to buy him a god damn XBONE one :D , well when he received the system he was very "because I'm so happy tadadad" , system turned on, first it needed to download an update 500 mb :D , then it needed to sync... this took about 30-40 minutes wow (in the commercial they were inside the system in a few sec's) , then he inserted Ryse the g4m3 , well again it needed to download 4GB of UPDATES!!! 4 GB :D , and naturaly it also started downloading TitanFall as well... , long story short it took this damn system 4 hours to go from brick to something with all my best intentions , near to a console....

I must say , the media center feel ruins it all... I myself will be buying a PS4 , we need gaming machines, not multimedia shits...

that is for idiots...who like to showoff their stuff, and drive 4x4 SUV's inside cities...

Be prepared for the same initial experience that you are complaining about then - require a day 1 update, wait for games to install, wait for download of patches/updates.

Does anyone else feel like we're almost heading into the same kind of situation just before the massive industry crash of the 80s?

There's far too many competing half-*ssed products on the market now, along with literally hundreds of thousands of competing games, most of which are sh*t, and I just don't see how this is good for the consumer at all.

This is just going to confuse most people and ultimately scare them aware from gaming, if it's this convoluted and full of garbage.

I know I'm starting to get sick of all this "me too" crap to be honest.

I really does remind me of just before the crash in the 80s where people were just tired of a flood of similar junk and far too many crap games.

@amaneuvering I have been thinking this same thing, but the difference is that the consumer base is large enough now to support those crappy games.Back in the 80'2 there were thousands of gamers... now there are millions if not Billions! I don't see a crash happening anytime soon. Devs will just have to bite the bullet and start spending years and millions making games, or else the quality will suffer so bad, they'll go out of business. The development process for Next Gen consoles SHOULD be at LEAST 2 years imo. Otherwise, you're not maximizing graphical output, story, OR profits...Time is the greatest investment you could ever put into a videogame. Why do you think it takes Kojima 5 years to make an MGS game, or why COD makers decided to move to a 3 year dev cycle? Because devolopers are starting to realize that eventually, come another generation or two, all GREAT games will take 5 years to make. Unless they completely revolutionize the way games are made, that is...

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yes and it is a good thing. After that crash, mid range games with innovation flooded the market. It was a great time to be a gamer.

Also from that junk many great franchises were made. Just a few years ago all major games felt the same. Companies are investing too much money to take any real chances.

@amaneuvering I think the industry could use a nice crash, at least on the mobile game side of things. Maybe King.com could go belly up, I don't think many people would be sad about that except the idiots who actually bought stock in it when it went public.

That same ignorant logic could have been spouted out just before the crash of the 80s too.

Do you even comprehend?

@amaneuvering @fredyellowone You have no clue what is going on, you freaking troll. In the 80's you had tons of low quality consoles, all after the same freaking market; unlike today, where there is 3 major brands that are selling very well millions of games. Also, it's good to point out that inflation was a good reason for that crash, and the level of inflation today is miles to what was in 1983.

Another reason is that in 1983, war was open between publishers and developers, and millions got lost in court fighting in an attempt for the dev's to get some recognition. And finally, Atari, the leader in video games in 1983, rushed the 2600. It was so broken that people lost confidence in the market at that time. Not only that but in 1983, certain brands of PC's sold computers for the same price than an Atari.

So, tell me, what is close in that?
