Activision's James Bond games disappear from Steam and Xbox 360

PC versions of Activision's James Bond games have been removed from digital sale on Steam, Xbox 360 Games on Demand and Activision's own web store.

Activision's suite of James Bond games have all disappeared from Steam, Xbox 360 and Activision's own digital store. Spotted by Neogamr.net, 007 Legends and James Bond 007: Blood Stone, from now-defunct studios Eurocom and Bizarre Creations, and the Treyarch-helmed Quantum of Solace are no longer available to purchase from Steam.

No Caption Provided

There are no results in Activision's own store, either. On the consoles, the Xbox 360 Games on Demand version of GoldenEye 007: Reloaded has also been pulled. The game is still available to buy on the PlayStation 3, but it is not clear if the game will remain listed on the PlayStation Store when the marketplace is refreshed this week.

One reason for games being pulled from digital sale can be down to licensing agreements expiring, as happened with GTA: Vice City on Steam recently. Activision obtained the gaming rights to the then-lucrative Bond license from EA in 2006, in a deal with MGM and EON that was scheduled to last until 2014. It is possible that Activision has pulled the plug on this arrangement.

The last Bond game, Eurocom's 007 Legends, was derided by critics and failed to make an impact on the sales charts, despite being timed to coincide with the release of uber-blockbuster Skyfall. The studio's previous game, the lukewarm 2010 remake of the classic GoldenEye 007, also failed to capture hearts and wallets and the Derby-based studio was closed at the end of 2012.

You see? Steam and digital games are NOT the future.

@zzamaro

Tell me about how you bought all 3 Deus Ex games for ~$11 not on Steam... Or how you were able to get a copy of Hitman for $25 or Borderlands 2 for $30 not using Steam... Steam really is the future.

@fightingfish18 The point is that you didn't buy them, you bought a right to access them, with Valve retaining the right to cut that access whenever they want. Digital distribution with DRM is not the future, because DRM is a timebomb. When you buy a physical and/or DRM-free copy of a game, you're guaranteed to still be able to play it int 5, 10, or 20 years. But for any online library there's always a chance that suddenly, it's gone. You have to take that into account before comparing prices. Buying a game on Steam is not a purchase, it's a "rental deluxe".

@zzamaro If you purchased the game you can still download and play the game on steam even if the company goes under. Not sure about other services though.

@spammehardo @zzamaro What if Valve for what ever reason ever went under, as unlikely as that may appear at this moment.

@HIT3kNology That statement was made only about Valve's own games. Their publisher contracts don't allow them to "unlock" games from third-party publishers.

@GoingPostal13 @spammehardo @zzamaro Valve stated you would be allowed to keep your games if they went under. Probably through downloading to your harddrive. But I would think if they were close to going under they would just be bought and it would continue.

@GoingPostal13 @zzamaro Pretty gigantic what if. More then likely they would be bought up by someone else and the service would be still intact.

Crap. I've been watching all the Bond movies, and I wanted to pick these up when they got cheap. This is the problem with IP-based games. They just disappear one day with no warning when the publisher decides to no longer pay for the license. Poor timing if you ask me. With the recent release of the new movie and all the old movies on Blu-ray, demand might have went up.

That really doesn't surprise me but Quantum of Solace was a solid FPS and I heard the same for Blood Stone which I will pick up when it drops to about $10

if the plug has been pulled on activision doing bonds games it would be by MGM and EON not activision and after what happened with 007 legends i can't really blame them if they did

I wish they'd make another Bond Game like From Russia with Love on the original Xbox that one was my favorite I prefer the 3rd-person Bond Games over the FPS ones they just seem like your standard shooters plus I hate not being able to actually see Bond unless it's a cutscene.

@Marky360 they made Everything or nothing first... and that was a better game 3rd person bond game than FRwL (i love it too btw) and more recently activision released Bloodstone which, though short, is still pretty awesome too

I think a lot of people have miss understood. If not, then my mistake, but just because these bond games are pulled off from being purchased, you can still DOWNLOAD and PLAY them if you have already purchased them in the past. No one is being screwed over by anything. Just thought I'd help spread this. Happy gaming.

why is it so hard for companies to make a good bond game. it has everything you would want to include to make a good game but developers cant seem to make anything worth playing.

I try every bond demo once released in the hope they will finaly make a good one and every time i think "no chance am buying that c**p"

For such a huge franchise i dont understand why money and time isnt put into it to make a proper bond game as it has the possibility of doing sales on par with halo, Cod etc when done right

This is the one area where I don't like electronic game distribution. As long as they have the game up you can download it again if you uninstalled it to make room on your PC or if you change computers. But once they remove it from their system you are screwed if you ever want to play that game again in the future. With a disc this is never a concern. I've used Steam and I will do so in the future but I know at some point I'm not going to be able to get something I paid for and it's going to piss me off when it happens.

@Dasim64 Luckily, Steam has your back, because you can always download a game after you purchased it. The only games that don't work like that are MMO's that go under.

IP being sold again after Activision provably refused to keep paying on their deal for such a horribly executed franchise of games.

So, what happens to people who bought the game but wanted to re-download them?

Is it still available to them? Incredibly unfair if not.

Dear sweet jesus could it be true? Could Activision's atrocious bond era finally be at an end? Could this, in fact, FINALLY open the doors for the release of the official Rare-made Goldeneye HD remake that was blocked at 99% completion?

@brok Don't count on it. The Bond series has such a f***ed up licensing hell, the HD Goldeneye remake won't release.

Besides, MS' is getting mass flak for how they are treating Rare and gamers hate their asses for it.

@nintendoboy16 Rare is long dead- most of the staff have already gone and the rest are bound and gagged properly by Microsoft. I doubt Rare will ever return to it's N64 Golden age.

I wonder if Activision is exchanging the Bond license the same way EA and Nintendo/Rare did.

Also, I fins it funny that they called the Goldeneye remake lukewarm, even though GS (and other critics) praised it to high heaven...

License or no license. If I buy a game on Steam and have to re-download the game for whatever reason I expect it to be available to those that purchased it indefinately. If digital is going to replace physical copies then it must be that way. I purchase games to own and add to my collection on Steam. I don't rent them until the license goes away.

@Defender1978 That's how it works already. If you buy a game on Steam you can download it indefinitely - even if the game is pulled for sale from the storefront. I've got Quantum of Solace on there and I can play it anytime I like.

@halBU Indefinitely meaning, as long as the Steam service is running. I agree Steam is a pretty safe bet considering their size, but it's not unheard of for big companies to unexpectedly go bust. Or be hit with legal trouble. Bottomline, once no one is around to pay for all those expensive servers anymore, it's over.

@halBU @Defender1978 That's how it is with Steam, but worth checking the T&C's of other sites, as some put time limits or number of downloads - on the forums people were reporting those kind of issues with UPlay and AC3 / Far Cry 3

One crazy thought: EA bought the licence back and allow Bioware to revive its canceled Spy RPG. Maybe we can get another Bioware classic that way, but that's just me thinking.

@SolidTy While I don't know for certain in this case since I don't have any of those games on Steam to test, when previous games have been pulled they are still available to those that already had them - it just stops anyone new from buying it.

The last good Bond game was GoldenEye 007 on the Nintendo 64, so I fail to see why anyone should care about these titles being removed from Steam, Xbox LIVE and maybe the PlayStation Store.
