Activision uncloaks Transformers sequel

Tie-in to this summer's Michael Bay blockbuster Revenge of the Fallen is coming to PC, PS3, PS2, PSP, 360, and twice to the DS.

In summer 2007, Activision released the Transformers game, based on the eponymous effects-heavy summer blockbuster inspired by the Hasbro toy line. Given that the film grossed $320 million and the game made $75 million in the US, small surprise then that the publisher and Paramount Pictures are joining up again. Today, the two companies announced that they are indeed collaborating on a game adaptation of the forthcoming sequel, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Well, he looks friendly!
Well, he looks friendly!

Directed by Michael Bay, Revenge of the Fallen the movie premieres in US theaters on June 26, and will once again see two factions of towering, shape-shifting robots--Autobots and Decepticons--engaged in a life-or-death struggle. Unfortunately for Earth, the androids continue to use the planet as a battleground, leveling cities and decimating human armies, as can been seen in the film's latest trailer.

The Revenge of the Fallen game will be, like its lukewarmly received predecessor, an action-focused game that puts players in control of a variety of Transformers. Jumping between robot and vehicle mode, players will fight through a single-player campaign set in such locales as Cairo and Shanghai. Unlike its forbear, the new game will also feature online multiplayer modes.

To put out Revenge of the Fallen games on every active platform, Activision is calling on no less than five separate studios, four internal and one external. Luxoflux (True Crime) is handling the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 editions of the game, Beenox is working on the PC, Krome Studios on the Wii and PlayStation 2, Savage Entertainment on the PSP, and Vicarious Visions on two DS games--one Autobot-themed, the other for the Decepticons.

As-yet unrated and unpriced, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen will be released "near" the film's premiere, according to an Activision rep. The same rep declined to say if any of the film's cast, which includes Shia LeBouf, Josh Duhamel, and Megan Fox, would lend their voices to the game.

Transformers deserves a way better game than this. This is like kicking Micheal Bay in the face. They need a better developer than activision. Movie tying games really need to step there game up.

YAY! new Transformers game. and you know what happens when a game is made with a Movie as a Tie-In Product..the answer is..IT WILL ALWAYS SUCK..so remove Tie-Ins. instead. Develop the game Properly..so that it won't suck..

Krome Studios is working on the Wii version? Did Activision not see the atrocity that was The Force Unleashed on the Wii?

The only way this game won't suck is if Luxoflux can pull off something that Traveller's Tales couldn't. They've got the talent, but I'll seriously have to wait and see.

@Superdude687 I wouldn't consider Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from BB a movie game. Sure the character is from the movies, but the story and setting for the game were completely original, which is probably the biggest reason it was good (that and a pretty cool first person melee system). The biggest problem with most movie games is that they don't really have to try because all the people who have even a slight interest in the movie play the game thinking, "The movie was good, so the game must be too," which is usually not the case. In the instance of Transformers...the movie sucked, so how could you ask for much from the game. That whole movie was an overdone story about the nerdy teen who wants the hot chick. The only difference was this guy had a giant robot who could change into a car to help him get laid. Michael Bay just needs to stop....Bad Boys was his only good outing. Everything else he touches turns a smelly shade of brown. That's my two cents.

The game should be better than the first one as they are now custom to the 360 hardware. So this game should be a vast improvement hopefully. I remember Altered Beast on Megadrive by Activision. Was Great.

There do exist good Movie tie-ins but they're so hard to find through the tons and tons of crap. I mean King Kong on the PS2 was good, Spider-Man 1 and 2 for PS2 were good, Lord of The Rings: Two Towers and Return Of The King were good and X-Men Origins: Wolverine looks really good so don't automatically say all Movie tie-ins are crap because they're Movie games.

A game that based on Transformers should be near-impossible to fail, yet they did it in the first game. I hope the 2nd game will be a vast improvement, but at least there will be multiplayer option.

Indulge Posted Feb 9, 2009 12:08 pm GMT -12 @superdude687 It was also the only good movie-to-game adaptation out there. Personally, my favorite movie-to-game adaptation is probably "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" for GCN.

They should hire me to make them a movie game. I can make something in Visual Basic and put it in a nice shiny box with movie art on it. There's a good chance it will sell just as well.

the best thing to do is used the modernized new models of the transformers but make a game completely seperate from the movie, like batman arkham asylum... these movies tie-ins are fated to be profit-farming rush jobs

The Transformers game that was on PS2 was an epic game, all the mini bots to collect, not to mention the fact that you could fly!!! But the one recently was... "Sub-standard"

Reply to Nightfox31: actually i really liked the king kong game. i though it was well worth the rent.maybe not on 360 but on ps2 it was really fun. A good change up from the socom series and tony hawk. It was fun. But i can't really think of another one, well maybe star wars episode 3. That was great too, wasnt a whole lot to do in it but it had awesome gameplay and fun multiplayer.

Movie games are normally a tradition in mediocry, if at best. Name one great movie game out there. Its ahrd fact of life. Kravyn already said it, that people buy it for the title and familiarity to that title. Game SUCKS. Movie F*IN ROCKS

The only good transformers game was based on the Energon cartoon series and even that wasn't anything spectacular. *edit* I meant the Armada series

I tried & tried to play the Transformers game, but just wasn't very good. A sequel means nothing except for another possible rental to me, that is unless they actually work hard in making this one instead of rushing through it & profiting off the Transformers name.

Just because a game sold a lot doesn't mean people liked it. Since many people out there don't read reviews, etc. and they buy games for no other reason than they're familiar with the name or what's written on the back of the box. So they buy the game full price, find out it sucks balls and either A. Return it or B. Trade it back in. And since there's no way to track how many games get returned or traded back in they automatically assume that that $75 million are based on people who bought and liked the game when, in reality, they bought it and didn't like it and got rid of it.

What upsets me the most is, besides the idiots who buy this and the previous one, Is the fact that they are going to make Crap like this, but they cancel the really Uber stuff like the C&C First person. the games people will actually play for moar than 10minutes. It gets worse, a 50cent next gen shooter. . . . there is no God PS. There was only one Adaption to PC that was gr8, and that was Riddick

The movie will be awesome, but the game, not at all. The only good Transformers games weren't even movie based, but cartoon based. The Transformers Transmetals Beast Wars game back on the N64/PS1 was good, and the one on the PS2 based on Armada was good as well.

Given the previous Transformers Movie video game I have very low expectations for this one. If STARBREEZE the makers of the Riddick Videogames were developing this than we can be rest asssured that it would a good game. For some reason to me the most sucessful Transformers Video game was the one Atari developed for the PS2 back in 2004( Correct me if I am wrong)
