User Rating: 9.6 | Wario Ware, Inc: Minigame Mania GBA
There are very few games these days that are so quirky and Japanese that you have to just stop and look. Wario Ware is one of those rare cases. Wario Ware is a puzzle game that includes a collection of mini games that are so small and short they are really micro games as stated in the game’s title. There are over 200 mini games to play and it will take quite a while to unlock them all. One example of a mini game is where you must catch a piece of toast that has shot out of a toaster or another where you control Wario and must stomp Goombas Super Mario style. The list of games goes on and on, and while you may think that they would become boring after a while the game has an original way of giving the games to you. Also the fact that there are different levels of gameplay, increasing speeds and boss fights proves that this will be quite an addiction for anybody. An example of a quick game of Wario Ware is as follows, you play the mini games leading up to a certain point where the speed of the games increases. You then play more mini games until you reach the boss fight (which is a little more difficult and much longer than the normal mini games). Once you beat the boss you get an extra life and the level of gameplay increases, rinse, lather and repeat. This is what all the normal levels in Wario Ware, though there are many different types of genres of mini games to play, are like. As a puzzle game Wario Ware is very light on story. Wario is again feeling like making some cash and while watching TV one day he sees a news broadcast about a new popular videogame. This gives him the idea to create his own development company. He calls up his friends to create the mini games so he can quickly sell the game. Of course it is not in the nature of a puzzle game to have a great story and this is no exception. The graphics in Wario Ware range from very simplistic to very realistic. In one mini game all you might see is a small white box and a dot while in another you get a realistic picture of a bowl of spaghetti and fork or a collie in the likes of Lassie ready to shake its paws. The graphics are very effective and very strong for a GBA title. The artistic style in the game is very unique as well because of its Japanese flavor. This is a showcase title for the GBA. Wario Ware’s sound is very strong for a GBA title. The game includes many techno style tracks of music that fit the game very well; there are even a few songs with digitized lyrics. The sound effects while very good take a back seat to the music, they aren’t very strong but they aren’t mediocre by any means. Overall this is a GBA game you will want headphones for. For any kind of puzzle game there has to be a lot of replay value to get your money’s worth, Wario Ware delivers this and then some. Other than the over 200 mini games there are 4 two player mini games, and many unlockable full-fledged mini games. These include a complete version of Dr. Mario titled Dr. Wario as well as a small paper airplane flying game, there are many others you can unlock as well. This is another reason why Wario Ware is not another game that you will play for a while and then forget, you will want to unlock all the extra mini games, you will want to get the top scores, you will want to beat the hardest modes. It harkens back to the old school days of getting your total money’s worth out of the game and not giving up. In the end Wario Ware is another solid game for the GBA. Even if you don’t enjoy puzzle games, simply put you will love Wario Ware. It is another reason why the handheld market is as full-fledged as the home console one. The game is a great testament to Nintendo’s great quality and continuing stride to innovate. Do not miss out on this one.
