User Rating: 9.6 | Wario Ware, Inc: Minigame Mania GBA
WarioWare: Mega Microgame$ is hand-down the stupidest, most ludicrous, and perhaps the most insane game I have ever played on the might GBA. It is a game that defies description as well as logic, and is an insult to the intelligence of gamers of all ages and skill levels. Simply put: I love this game. WarioWare is a tongue-in-cheek, frantic, and ultimately addictive collection of minigames that makes no sense, even after multiple playings. Wario has recognized that the video game business is one rife with opportunities for profit, and has enlisted his friends to craft a series of minigames that are intended to drive players insane, and put money in Wario's pockets. The controls are simple. All you need is the directional pad and the A buttton. Minigames are thrown at you in waves, and while each "level" has a set roster of games, you never know what is coming next. As you progress, the game speeds up, throwing things more quickly than before. As each game lasts about three seconds, you have precious few moments to determine 1) what game you're playing and 2) what the objective is. Though hints are given before the game starts, nothing quite prepares you fully for the challenge. The games themselves are quite varied, though they often share a similar theme. But, don't be turned off by the simplicity of the games, for it's the simplicity that makes this game so accessible and so addictive. The graphics are purposefully a mixed bag. While some games feature insanely detailed graphics, still others are quite rudimentary, featuring NES or original GameBoy graphics. Some games go one step lower, presenting almost embarassingly low-quality graphics. That's part of the charm. The sound is key to the game's frenetic atmosphere, from simple blips to fully-vocalized songs, the music moves along at an increasingly frantic clip until your nerves are shot. It's a quite effective tool to create an insane ambience. Taken at face value, WarioWare may seem like a rip-off. But, rest assured, this is a game that must be played to truly appreciate. And once you pick it up, you'll be hard-pressed to put it down. As if the 200+ games weren't enough, WarioWare features some great unlockable full versions of classic NES games like Dr. Mario. WarioWare is a godsend for the ADD among us. It's a game that really cannot be appreciated through descriptions and screenshots. For those looking for an addictive, yet deep game that's just as good for extended play as it is for brief distrations, you can't go wrong with WarioWare.
