There are several shooter games but only around ten percent have the appeal of the Unreal Tournament series.

Man I loved me some UT. Great music choice for the vid too. I actually had all the music from that game mp3'd and if youve played the game youd recognize that tune immediately.

I'm hoping that the duel FPS games rule again. Everything became MMORPG and vehicles team deathmatch

Wow I didn't know it had such a sweet soundtrack as I loved dance music as a kid. If I was a PC gamer I would have definitely got into this one!

Back when FPS games were fun. No whiny 8 year old xbox kids screaming at you across a headset either.

My favourite memory of UT was playing it at a LAN party and I was committing the cardinal sin (watching the guy next to me's screen) and I noticed he was in the process of sniping some guy. I was looking at his screen trying to discern his position on the map and didn't even realise the guy he was sniping was me... I figured out where he was just in time to look back at my screen and get shot in the head :D

The Flack Cannon is my favorite weapon in any FPS. I always preferred Q3A to Unreal but both games I enjoyed a lot and played the hell out of. Fragball mode was great fun and UT3 just felt really slow paced and kind of dumbed down compared to the previous games in the series. UT2k4 was probably the best UT game IMO.

@pelvist I also preferred Q3 Arena over the original Unreal Tournament because of its gorgeus visuals and learning curve which was way higher when you took advantage of the refresh rate, config settings and moved around the map with circle strafe jumps defying the game physics. Awesome!! I missed those duels in Q3DM6 with the OSP mod and those team deathmatches in Rocket Arena. Very funny years where these duel FPS rule the entire internet multiplayer scene.
Unreal Tournament 2004 was the best UT so far. It made the gameplay very solid and balanced. Some lousy weapons in UT2003 were tweaked and made very essential. Now you felt the need to carry all the guns for specific kill purposes. With the apropiate mods UT2k4 was a very competitive game

Fantastic video. Danny basically summarized why UT99 was so amazing. He even referred to the Bot AI which WAS really good for its time (and still is imo). I still remember getting my butt kicked many times by Xan on that spaceship before finally beating him to unlock his skin.

Also the multiple firing modes on weapons was a huge reason why I played UT99 over Quake 3.

I spent untold amounts of time running around in this game with a launcher in my hand, and loved every minute of it. Loved the music as just as much as the game itself. God I miss those days.

being the ignorant online gamer at the time and owning a dream-cast and the version of unreal i played through all of this single player, locally on two pads multiplayer, having no idea about online play (not that the sega version would have topped the pc), i adored unreal. Having seen the commercial for the new amd chips on the pc, i couldnt wait. I also had counterstrike for my birthday, again thinking what do i do on this game, then having played it and thoroughly enjoying it on the pc later realised!!! happy memories along with quake.

Secondary fire mode was great for lobbing 3-4 shells down an incline or narrow hallway.

Just toss'em and keep moving, next thing you know, you got a kill =)

I always was more in favor of Quake. But I must agree, that back then all those arena shooters was more fun, and no one was crying about nothing, just had fun. Now everyone is crying and go on psychotic rages on mic, all games have level up system and boring maps. I remember when my friend was so angry b/c consoles didnt had such a good FPS or RPG games as PC did. Now everything turned in 180 degree.

@Apofis_SG-1 I agree with you. Now the PC has the leftover....
Quake 3 maps were better suited for duel matches therefore making it more "pro". UT maps favor the "Everyone against everyone deathmatch" where any average level player could make more frags with traps and some stupid stuff like feign death and overpowered weapons like the reedemer. Definitively not a profesional competitive game like Q3 was

Today's "gamers" need to go back and play this game, hell play the entire series.

Only then will they see that they've essentially been pissing away for 60+ bucks...for games like Titanfall.

It is amazing how both nostalgia and the way our memory works: make older games, that were indeed groundbreaking at the time: look amazing graphically. And then when you see them again nowadays: it all looks bad, dated, and weird.

Don't get me wrong: Unreal Games always looked groundbreaking, and impressive. And were usually neat eyecandies. Very clear, vivid textures and visual effects.

But I can't help it... I remember them looking amazing, and now that I watch them again: it is like: "IS THAT HOW THEY LOOKED LIKE? wow......."

GTA feels real, it feels like driving through an actual city, when you cruise on the highway and suddenly the radio DJ says "Good morning los santos. or watch out for that nasty rain headed in" it's just very believable.

the first UT (Game of the Year Edition) even had HQ Textues besides its new maps and other new features (that were all availbale for free for buyers of the other versions), there were comin new opengl version for years, there is a new directx10 version made by fans.

On modern Screens with HQ Textures and newest OpenGl it simply looks awesome for an 15 year old game.

The fist shooter i played though was Half-life -. i didnt like others back then - tried a lot but never finished them. Even Unreal felt bad but i thought give UT a try

PC gaming was so amazing that time ...

Half-Life, UT, Deus Ex, Dungeon Keeper 1&2), Age of Empires 1&2, Anno 1602, Blade Runner, Diablo 2, Final Fantasy VII & VIII, Tomb raider II & III, command & conquer, starcraft ... Max Payne.

also played a lot other games, but that are my top games from that time.

Games were so individual in that time - fantastic and amazing gameplay and storys and that are just some which i played for very long times.

Now its all about lame console like shooters, 3rd person action games and only a few games are compareable to those we had the whole 90s over.

The PC ended somehow in the time of X360 and PS3 - maybe people were just sick of buying PCs and Gpus all over again for the latest games, but that time is also over with the bigger fiction for consoles, bought my latest PC back in 2010, i now bought a new GPU and everything looks just like PS4 games.

The PC now offers just everything you may want to play - you can emulate nearly all consoles, you can nearly play all games of the last 25 years ...

The new Consoles feel so poor about games and all they can do now are some lame games - you could spend 10x time to look around what a Pc can offer then playing with the new consoles.

MOds, Fixes, Tools etc. and large community make the PC way more comfortable then it was, new PC dont really have any loading times.

Consoles are just needed for the exclusives, but it will take years to have mor ethen 2 or 3 really good games you want to play.
