Reality Check - What if the PS4 or Xbox One Fail?

I love the music that is used on Reality Check. Does anyone know the names of the artists/songs?

THe leaps and bounds of this next gen hardware is minimal. I dont see either console reaching 8 year life span.

The impact of a monopoly on the industry has been documented. In the wake of the industry crash, Nintendo swept in and effectively became the only relevant hardware maker, at least in the US. As a result, third parties were bullied into censorship and loyalty contracts, as well as limited in how many games they could put out on a year, effectively cutting off consumer choice until Sega broke through with the Genesis, and their own exclusive third parties.

In the time between the NES' And Genesis' debuts, Nintendo strangled competition and dictated content. If either Sony or Microsoft were to fail, expect the other one to make Nintendo's 80s monopoly look like a paradise in comparison.

Interesting question but one thing I personally find interesting is this:

How come there is no name for this 'schadenfreude' phenomenon in the English language (neither British, American, Australian nor any other) when there is in the German (schadenfreude) and Hungarian (káröröm) languages? There might be in others too, but English has an Anglo-Saxon origin which is a germanic language, thus a connection to the German word might be a natural expectation, yet there is none.

I wonder if anyone has a legitimate idea about this.

I think they'd make more money if they just went the **** away as Console Makers and just focused on making games. Like, Nintendo games on PC- via an online Nintendo store in the vein of Steam. Hell, they could even charge $200 for the app to play their games on PC, like you would for a console.

I don't get involved with console wars, as I don't get involved with consoles. Being on Gamespot is weird- it's full of angry Console Gamers. Over at Rock, Paper, Shotgun (a PC game site), it's a different world. There aren't too many ego's that need stroking, and everyone is on the same plane.

I would take IMMENSE pleasure in both MS and Sony burning in the console market. I don't care for them, and I think the way their "console wars" makes people (especially adults) act is COMPLETELY amazing. If you EVER need to be reminded that we're all just animals, come to Gamespot every 4-5 years when a new console (or GTA) is dropping, and watch the empty meat sacks attack the other meat sacks.

P.S.- Groupthink can suck my left testicle. I won't shave it for a week, so it's nice and furry for you.

So far so good, I got my PS4 3 days ago and it works great ! , no complains except for the limited game availability, IIIIII looove my PS4 :-D

Having competition among the console manufacturers is a good thing. Heck, I wish they hated each others guts. There'd be less risk of 'cooperation'. Any time you have only 2 competitors they tend to share the monopoly position (ATT, TWC for example). Lets hope the Steam Machine opens the market up to a third alternative.

The main thing all those studies tell us is that humans are fekked up. Which most of us already knew. There are probably plenty of aliens travelling around space that stay away from Earth because they all hate us, lol :P

If these consoles fail there is no major loss as their predecessors were already significant.

Xbox One needs to fail. Microsoft must leave the console business and we should welcome a brand new competitor with open arms. Or Sega with a Sega Dreamcast 2.

Really enjoyed the show Cam. Interesting connection made about schadenfreude (had to copy and paste that word!). Now I don't need to feel so bad about taking pleasure when someone else is miserable *evil laughter resonates in the background*. A bit more related to topic, I still believe some competition is better than no competition. A monopoly is likely to bring down product quality.

Thanks for going through all the trouble of researching about studies on schadenfreude (another c&p) and even how to say the very word. This is why I come to Gamespot instead of IGN.

For me the best time for gaming was when PSOne was only console worth mentioning. Halfassed games weren't released as often as they are now.

Now we mostly get graphics improvements, and either gameplay and/or story stucks.

IMO games had to be better 'cause competitions among developers was higher, and we had more choices when buying games, so why would you buy halfassed games, if you have good ones, for me there isn't more than 20 games worth owning on PS3, XBOX360 has maybe 3 or 4 exclusives that are worth owning. But when crappy console (such as Wii U) steals an exclusive (like Bayonneta 2), than it annoys me.

Plus there weren't consoles that could take away great games as exclusives. (IMO. In later years Gamecube and N64 couldn't really compare to PSOne)

I think that it'd be better if consoles weren;t exlusive.if their was a univeral design. Like how a dvd can be played on any dvd player regardless of it's made by pasnasonic, sony, or toshiba. There'd still be competion but it'd be more open because more companies could get into console manufacturing without having to worry about overcoming the hurdle securing exclusive titles.

Gamers win because they wouldn't have to buy multiple consoles just to play a few exclusives titles. Also it'd cut down on the console war because then everyone console would play the same game. Your choice would just come down to which system has the best interface, most cost effective, aesthetically pleasing, best features, or rendered the games to your liking.

Competition is good for the consumer. The more the merrier.

A console monopoly basically can't happen. For a monopoly to actually exist the situation isn't simply that there is a single company in that sector, in practice the additional requirement that no other company can enter that business is required. There are too many players on the fringes of the core market for that to possible such as Nintendo, Valve, and then some viable long shots such as nvidia, Apple. If either Sony or Microsoft dropped out then that space would look a lot more appealing than it does now.

However what we have seen in previous console generations is not a true monopoly but the core market having a single dominant console such as with the Playstation. This past generation was the exception with something approaching parity in the core market. However Sony essentially had no direct competition in Asia for the PS3 and it didn't lead to price hikes. There's actually various mechanisms that can push down prices even without competition especially when an industry is essentially selling a service as opposed to a commodity. For example the business model of expendables, if you sell at a lower price people may buy more overall, anyone who uses steam regularly probably gets stung by this in the Steam sales. Further the idea of competition pushing down prices through supply and demand is a flawed oversimplification. Even in that environment "premium" products can be used to push up prices if there is a section of the market that will support it or can be goaded into supporting it.

I'd like to see more than just 2 choices. An obvious third choice is Nintendo, but Nintendo needs to pick up its game, release a current gen console (on par with Xbox&PS4) and allow more outside developers' games and ideas. Competition breeds excellence; and better games, which is really what we want. Regardless of the console.

A monopoly would be bad news, although they will always have a limit in how high the price of the remaining console would be. A console is, after all, the cheap way of having high-quality gaming. If they rise the price they would loose both customers and third parties to PC... and that would continue the chain.
