This isn't a feature I'll use, but people seem keen on it so that's good. I'm more waiting for Pikmin 3 which was delayed from Launch to Summer 2013.

So, this is how it is going to work... the Wii U controller has an IR blaster that seamlessly switches the input source on your HDTV between the unit itself and your TV programming source. So, pick the TV to watch live and then it switches the TV input over... go "home" on the Wii and it switches the input back. There is no input or processing of the video into the native Wii environment. Also, this is cool, the OS has it's own dedicated CPU, aside for the triple core 3+GHz ibm power pc CPU your games run on!

We're living in what amounts to the "wild west" of convergence right now - basically everyone's racing to build the much sought after holy grail of broadcasting and media, sometimes called the "all-in-one" box by rather naive marketing people, but really what will become the new mainstream entry point for consumers to reach all visual content, i.e. movies, television and games. "Visual" is the keyword here. Too often marketing executives seem to think if they throw in a CD player or a clock radio, or links to "social media", that makes it "all-in-one". Hardly. "All-in-one" has nothing to do with music and "integrating" social media. It has everything to do with just three things: movies, TV, video games, all from one entry point.

What it really heralds, though, is effectively the end of telecoms, cable and satellite as distributors. The future doesn't include them right now, because they are becoming increasingly redundant.

Imagine a world without cable. If you're on this site, no doubt it's probably a future you're already living. Young people don't get cable. They don't need it. You watch all your favourite content on-demand from a service like Netflix or Hulu (or, if you live in Canada like me, you just pirate it), or distributed directly from the networks/producers themselves through their websites and mobile apps.

The problem is "live" content, like news and sports, but even that is moving into the future already. NHL, NBA, and even NFL games can all be watched live if you buy their "Game Ticket" or "All Access" season package. But it isn't hard to imagine being able to "subscribe" to all your favourite team's games for a season.

As for news, it would have to have one foot in both on-demand and live content. Watch the investigative reports on demand, but watch a press conference or breaking news event from a live stream.

But here in Canada the telecoms like Rogers and Bell have our regulator, the CRTC (our FCC) bought and paid for through lobbying and patronage. As a result, this bright future that doesn't include them has roadblocks set up in front of it, all meant to slow down their competition until they have built their own "all-in-one" solution, which they will then force everyone to buy and gouge us in the price.

It's ridiculous how much innovation is stifled by the old boys club that runs our CRTC.

Has some potential game changing applications but won't hit the market as hard as the Wii just based on being able to do too much. Reaching variable age groups as the Wii, WILL NOT happen with Wii U. But it seems like a great machine with fantastic potential.

I think it's a cool app. I just wonder if you'll have to pay a subscription fee for every service or just one global fee.

@Birth00 the nintendo tvii service is free, it just brings together all the other services, if you want to watch something via netflix you'll need a subscription

I typically don't care for these kinds of features, but considering that my room is the ONLY room in the house to not have cable, this actually excites me so more power to the Wii U!

i didnt expect any of these features since nintendo is so anti-anybut vidoegames...like not letting it play dvd. but its a nice feature, but it was the fact its nintendos next video gameconsole (and where else can you play nintendo games? ) that sold me on it.

No matter what people always find something to complain about. Nintendo aren't forcing you to use any of the extra features, but since when having options is such a bad idea? No this isn't like Live, simply because you are not paying just to play your already bought and paid for game online. I sure wished that tablet was multi-touch, lets hope it can be software upgraded. I'm really liking the way Nintendo approached the living room with the Wii U, I wasn't expecting the Wii U to be this genuinely interesting but I see that Nintendo didn't just tack the tablet on, it has a bonafide purpose, which is more than I can say for the copy cats of the industry bolt on extras that are soon forgotten(Move) or ill-conceived ideas that are more a bother than it needs to be(Kinect).

Now I fully expect many devs to take CoD dual screen idea and use that for local multiplayer/co-op.

Does anyone know if this can link with a cable box on a different floor? Or must the Wii U actually connect with the box?

I really like the idea of having all of the services together, profiling according to family members, social media integration and information extras. Great feature that just adds to my justification for buying Wii U. I hope this feature is just as supported in the UK as it is in the US.

If I buy a game system, I buy to play games, not to watch TV or use it online, but to play games.

They keep creating gadgets on consoles to play movies, TV, use internet, all to please lazy people who can't press a button on a remote.

@Sohereiam It's not like you can't play games, just because you have the option to stream TV and movies that does not mean you have to use it
