I can only imagine how people who made fan art for the first game would feel. They may have imagined the fighters to be swanky Spanish swordfighters or animebishi's.

Then, the game's creators decided for this art-style. "Hey, you know the sprites from the first game? They were actually supposed to look like this."

With that said, the humanoids look entertainingly hideous.
